The only time I ever limited their water was if they were in the crate and only had the crate size bowl, and at night. I would pick up the water at aprx 8:00PM. b/4 bed. When they were older, and trustworthy they weren't confined and had free access to water. Puppies like to play alot and get thirsty. Usually when they wake up from naps they have to go potty and mine always wanted another drink when they came in. I personally never restricted their water as pups while I was around. Imagine if you were only allowed water 2x's a day. My Vet never said to limit the water. Just my opinion, not a judgement. Nancy |
We had not originally been limiting the water and it seemed ok. I think he was telling us to limit to help with potty training and because they are in a cool environment (a/c) they dont need as much as if they were outside. I'm not saying one way is right or wrong because i'm clueless when it comes to this. Just seems like he's chugging it when we put it out with meals. |
Mady always had unrestricted access to water, except at night when she was crated (to help avoid accidents). But that was only the first 3 months maybe. Since then she always has water available all the time. She's no longer crated at night (since about 6-7 months old) |
From Caitlyn's first night, the water bowl was off the floor after 8PM and back down before she came back in from her first morning potty break. The only thing I do now is make sure she doesn't drink so much that she gets sick. Puppies don't always know when to stop... kinda like my brother but that's a new topic. Vance |
Vance, something tells me your brother's water is a little higher proof. As a puppy, Oscar would drink and drink and drink until he threw up. Not ideal. I never limited how many times a day he got water, but I did start to limit how much he got at any given time. I think your vet may also be concerned about drinking a ton of water with a meal because of the risk of bloat. At any rate, Oscar's bowl always has water in it, but only about 12 ounces at a time. And when it's empty, and he's thirsty, he rattles the metal bowl with his nose until a a servant comes running to refill it. Laurie and Oscar |
In a nutshell limit quantity, not availability except nearing bedtime... Vance |
I think the Vet meant limiting water for potty training after a certain hour. I wouldn't recommend limiting water any other time. We used to pick up the water about an hour before bedtime. Allowing for another potty time after. But I found my pups would look for water in the night time...Allowing the licking of some ice cubes before bed is good. I would not recommedn limiting during the day. |
Well the vet clearly mentioned limiting water to only meal times and picking it up at other times until we can trust him. I think i'm going to leave it out though because I think it's kinda silly to limit it..plus he doesnt really have accidents inside that much |
I spoke to a breeder not long ago who said that UTIs can be the result of not getting enough water. If this is true, there's reason enough to leave the water out. Vance |
We give schubert unlimited access to water and he drinks a looooooot of water. more than any of my other dogs had ever. So after he gulps down half the water in our near gallon size water pot, he goes straight out to potty. Today, he sat in front of the door and looked in our direction..... it was his way of wondering how he can get us to take him out!!!!!!!!!! You can try limiting some water at night so she does better with potty/crate training at night if that's a problem for you. Nick and I are pretty much insomniacs so we pretty much take schubert out at 6am, 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 7pm, 10pm, 12am, 2am.... anytime in between when we see him sniffing. And still, we average about 1 accident/day.... |
