Happened last year and we got it repaired but think this year it will be the replacement. We're hoping we can find the part and since Carl's pretty handy he may be able to do it himself. |

ugh, hope he can get it going. Mine is running right now...although NOT what you want to hear, I'm sure! We are in the low 30's here right now. I have the thermostat set on 60 . And ordered more LP. We have a 1000 gallon tank, so we usually fill it when $$ allows. Put 400 gallons in a few weeks ago, going to add 250 tomorrow. We have had to replace ours once, and the motor a couple times. |
I still have my windows open. It was 38 when I got up this A.M. Love it! |
Found the problem, he called to see about getting the part because whatever it is is cracked. Repair man called back has one on his truck (it is a strange part) and will stop on his way home. Will fix it all for 65.00, well worth the cost so not complaining. I even turned the oven on for a while. We are soooooooo lucky, we live in the country but they did run the natural gas as far as the place just east of us. We would be in trouble if we had to fill a big propane tank, it's very costly. Dawn you have a corn stove right? Does that give you most of your heat or just as a supplement to the furnace? |
Ilene, Good to hear that your furnace will be fixed; and for cheap. I've never liked the idea of having a HUGE propane tank on my property. What does it cost to fill one of those things? |
New furnaces are expensive! Glad yours is repairable and a DH who can do it!!! |
well, be glad you aren't calling 911 to tell them one of your two 1000gal propane tanks may be headed towards the bridge because of flooding. |

The furnace man is here, I'm in the bedroom with Butchy so he doesn't help but seems like pressure guage or some such thing isn't working either. Furnace is only 5 years old but it's running. Glad tomorrow going to be worse than today. I don't know how much it costs to fill one of those tanks but I know it was a major decision when we bought this place. I think several hundred dollars at a clip from what I've heard. |
In my past life we had LP. We usually had to have it filled about every two months in the winter and twice during the summer. It was for the furnace, stove and dryer. I don't remember how much it cost but I know it was alot. |
Right now LP is $1.90/gallon here. A couple weeks ago it was $1.89 It's been cheaper than natural gas around here for several years. I love having my big tank (we own it, so can get LP from any company - we can shop around), and stock it. Those with smaller tanks, or with natural gas are more at the mercy of the market. Especially those w/ natural gas or similar who pay what they use every month. No way to stockpile when prices are lower. And we live on top of a hill...so if they are flooding and floating, we are in BIG trouble! |
I think that equates to something like $2.00 per therm and natural gas in your area right now is about $0.88 per therm including .69 for the gas and .18 for distribution, plus an $8 customer charge. Is that right? I think a gallon of propane has just under 100,000 BTUs and one therm of natural gas has exactly 100,000 BTUs. |
A few years ago, when I lived in MI I worked for a fuel company...just the other day I was thinking of all the people with the tanks (we called them pigs) and wondered how much it cost to fill them now. I know a lot of the people used to fill the tank like Dawn's and it would usually last them the whole winter season, of courrse the more you bought at one time, the larger the discount you would get. |

All I know is I have friends in town who get a gas bill every month based on usage, and when real winter hits, they are spending more per month than me. And this is sheltered, more energy efficient homes in the valley, vs. me in a drafty old farm house in the country on top of a hill! |
