A smartphone will be new for me but I'm going to embrace it. It's become a necessity for my profession. What are the pros and cons? What do you like and dislike about your phone? Are the apps better for the iPhone or the Droids? Consumer Reports rated the HTC Thunderbolt #1 for Verizon. Any help is appreciated. |

I have an iPhone 3GS that is about 2 1/2 years old. I use it constantly to access this forum and the rest of oes.org. It has not given me a moment's problem until about a week or two ago when the home button started to need a little extra pressure to activate it. It will probably fail at some point. The iPhone 4 has been out for more than a year released in June, 2010. It has some issues with its antenna design, I would wait for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 is expected to be released before the end of this year, likely in October; I'd wait to see how it is received before committing to buying it. My brother has an HTC android of some sort. He has lots of issues with it; for example, everytime we text back and forth if we "cross" texts his phone goes into some loop and keeps repeating his last text to me over and over again, while telling him that the text is failing. Customer supports has not been able to fix the issue. The interface just is not as slick as the iPhone. Then again, you're not locked into the App Store for everything... but you are kind of locked into the droid marketplace. At the end of the day, it is also a very nice phone, but I'm not the user of it so I really can't directly compare them. Oh! I do know my brother uses his with gmail and gets instant notification of emails. My iPhone is set to check for emails every 15 minutes. I hope this is somewhat helpful... |
If you need any access to anything Adobe, (I.e. PDF files) you'll need the Android as Apple and Adobe won't play together. Vance |
PDF files aren't an issue with the iPhone, but you can't run anything that requires Flash. Although an announcement in the last week or so that Apple will have limited support for Flash very soon. Ironically, Microsoft has decided to throw Adobe Flash under the bus in favor of HTML5 in their mobile applications. But yes, lack of Flash support has been a major annoyance that I had forgotten to mention! |
I have a Droid 2 and love it. It didn't take me long to figure it out. Get the phone on a Friday and spend the weekend messing with it and you'll be a pro by time you go back to work on Monday. I have hotmail e-mail so I can't comment on the e-mail portion of the phone other to say that if you have gmail, then you will get your e-mails instantaneously or you can choose when you want to receive them (every 15 min, every hour, once a day, etc.). The Droid marketplace is pretty big now. Any app worth having on the iphone will be available on the Droid. And I would probably stick with a Motorola branded android device from Verizon, like the Droid 3, or the Droid Bionic, or Droid X2. Go to the store and play with them. You may not like the size of some, or may not like the lack of a slide out keyboard in others. Oh, and the battery life of my Droid 2 is fantastic. I can go 4 days between charges. That may seem like a short time to non smart phone users but 4 days is awesome for a smart phone. Remember, these are computers that just happen to have a phone built into them. |
I'm behind a couple of generations for cell phones, so I can't offer any advice based on personal experience. I will say that a co-worker has an Android and really likes it. She probably does not use it for data dense applications--no pdf files, I would think. It is just a personal use phone for her. She's had it a bit over a year and I have not heard of any problems. |
I just switched from a blackberry curve to an iphone 4. I was a huge supporter of Blackberry as I live near the maker (support local jobs). But since getting the iphone my life has changed! I love this phone. I find it easy to read and send messages. The camera is great, my photos turn out amazingly. I use so many apps...mostly news related. I am not sure what other phones do, but man, I would not trade it! peg |
I love my balckberry curve and when it's time for a new phone I'll be getting another blackberry |
My brother just bought a Motorola Droid 3 from Verizon tonight. I was just teaching him how to use it. Awesome phone! He's really happy with his purchase so far. |
I have had the iPhone 4 since Auguust of last year without a blip of the "antenna problem" that was so much in the media. I believe it was totally manufactured as negative publicity - so many of my friends and family have it and have never had a single issue with it. I have far less dropped calls than I did with the 3GS or the 3G, and I never lose reception or signal strength. I've had an iPhone for 4 years and couldn't imagine switching. |
I had the iPhone 3G for a little over a year and got the iPhone 4 when that came out last year. I've had no issues with my reception and absolutely love it. The 5 megapixel camera takes great pictures and HD videos. I'm looking forward to getting the iPhone 5 when it's released next month. It will have a 8 megapixel camera, better battery life and other upgrades. I don't use my phone as my main camera but when I don't have my camera with me it takes great pictures and has a good zoom. I get my email, search the web and everything else with ease. It's true, it's a computer that happens to have a phone. It's also my iPod and I just connect it to my truck radio and don't have to carry CD's. I have a few friends that operate off the android system and they do have some problems but it might be the phone they have not the operating system. I've only ever had the iPhone as my smartphone so I can't say much about android. Cindy |
I just wanna mention that all this technology that is taken for granted by many is just simply amazing super fantastic unbelievable exciting stuff. Did I mention amazing? |
Thanks everybody! Such helpful advice! My brothers have the Droid X and the Droid 2 and both love their phone and hubby has the Blackberry Storm and loves it but will need an upgrade at some point. I'm leaning towards the Droid 3 because of the great comments and also because the pullout keyboard may be a good transition from an antiquated cell phone and I think it also has the touch keyboard too. But I'm also leaning towards an iPhone as well just to completely try something new. Someone told me there's an app to open PDF files for the iPhone. If that's true, then the iPhone can still be a contender. Opening PDF files within my emails is the primary feature I need to be able to do when away from my office. My phone's on it's very last legs though and I'm not sure I can wait for the iPhone 5. Does anyone know how much the iPhones cost when they first debut? That will probably be more expensive than the other choices. Do you think an iPhone 4 is a good choice if I can't wait for the iPhone 5? Is one 3G and one 4G? Another thing I was told is that the iPhone apps are simple and easy to learn without someone teaching you. The idea of having an HD video camera within the phone to take sheepie videos is of course appealing Need to decide soon. |
I don't think my iPhone 4 is 4G. Usually the new iPhones are $199.00 when they come out. I'm not sure of the exact date but I've heard Oct. 23rd for the iPhone 5 release. Cindy |
I read PDFs on my iPhone all the time, when surfing the web in Safari (the iPhone's web browser, similar to Internet Explorer or FireFox). When I would click on them they opened just fine until I installed a book reader called "Stanza." Then they opened in Stanza. I deleted Stanza, and now they open up in the browser just like they did before. I wasn't sure if they would open in an email which seems to be your requirement. So I just sent a pdf file as an attachment to my iPhone's email account and the file showed up as an attachment and i touched it and it opened the pdf file just fine. So PDF compatibility shouldn't be a problem for you with the iPhone if you choose the iPhone for other reasons. |
I had a Tilt for several years just because I wanted the keyboard. It made the phone heavier and thicker than other models. Just over a year ago, I got the Samsung Captivate/Fascinate. It has swipe - the keyboard appears at the bottom of the screen and you drag your finger from letter to letter. Except that you don't even really have to touch the actual key, just go in the general direction. A popup list will appear if the program isn't sure what word you wanted. I have large hands, so I turn the phone landscape for a larger keyboard. It only took a day or so to adapt and I love it. The downside is that their Kies program doesn't sync the Outlook calendar. My family has: one iPhone two Captivates two Windows 7 We are each very happy with them. |
I've been using Iphone 3G for 3 years now. Minor problems have been fixed/replaced by apple geniuses at the store. So no matter which iphone series you get enroll in the protection plan. It pretty much covers everything except for the cracked screen. If you see one single pixel that's off, they will replace the screen for you. I just realized that my phone is very slow compared to my brother's new iphone 4. So I'm really looking forward to the new iphone 5. |
I also highly recommend the apple care protection plan. I've not had to use it but when you consider you are carrying around a computer that happens to have a phone on it, I don't what to pay for replacement should something happen to it. Replacement cost is usually $600.00 Cindy |
I have had my iphone for a long time and love it. Couldnt go without it. WAIT WAIT WAIT...Iphone 5 is looking to come out Mid October so I wouldn't buy a iphone 4 yet. |
A few months ago my DH got an Iphone 4 from ATT, he has been adding Apps like a wild man is always tethered to the phone... I think this tech gift has surpassed them all, I agree with Ron, very amazing super fantastic! So, consider that IPhone 5! Good luck with whatever smart phone you select! |
