I really need to read more books than I do and thought this might be a great way to keep myself focused? Anyone interested? |

I am! Great idea! We had a book club at my previous workplace and I loved it! I've spent most of my life overseas, behind the "iron curtain" and there's no such thing as book clubs. Moreover, for me it's really hard to pick good books on this market. Therefore, what I've been doing lately is going back to the classics. It's really odd, for example, to read Tolstoy in English after I've read his works in two Slavic languages. But when it comes to local contemporary literature, I'm totally lost. |
Reading puts me to sleep so since I've been not sleeping all that well, lately, this could work. There won't be any quizzes, will there? Vance |
I'm game! |
Sounds like fun! Count me in |
I will join in! |
I'm in. Always looking for good books to read. |
I'd be interested. Depends on what books though. There are genres I refuse to read, like sci-fi. But give me a good whodunit and I'm in. |
Paula, you sound like me. No sci fi, no romance. Mystery and some contemporary like The Help, Water for Elephants and Cutting for Stone were fine. |

I think a lot of times people think of these classics as dry "good-for-you" books, like they're bran muffins. But it's actually a brilliantly entertaining and biting story, it's more like a great steak with a bottle of great wine than a bran muffin. A great yarn so to speak. And (in an obscure allusion to the British TV show Black's Books) has something for both men and women, thrilling battle and war scenes for the men balanced with domestic and romantic scenes for the women. I would be interested in this idea. |

That's so right! As a teen, when we had to read "War and Peace" in school, I hated the war parts and ... skipped most of them, actually So when do we start? |
I'd love it too but I am mostly into mysteries and books with strong women characters (think I'm such a coward that I like to see the other side). I like books by Sue Grafton, Kathy Reichs and series books so maybe I'm on my own. |
I'd be game too. I read too many serial murder mysteries, but enjoy current bestsellers too. Would be nice to expand on readings, maybe I'd remember the book more clearly later |
Count me in. I am an avid reader, but like several people mentioned really don't like sci-fi or romance novels. Just downloaded two books into my e-reader earlier today and they are total opposites. Kathy Reich's Flash and Bones and Thunder Dog by Michael Hingson & Susy Flory. Will probably read the Kathy Reich book first. Kathie |
One of the local t.v. stations has one program that features a book club, I try to read the books they are reading but since it's too far I don't go to the book club. Some I like, some I don't but it doesn't hurt to try them. |
It sounds as if us Scifi geeks need to start our own group, then!? |
ravenmoonart wrote: It sounds as if us Scifi geeks need to start our own group, then!? Oh, please, don't! I LOVE sci-fi and grew up reading that genre. I'm sure you could make some exciting sci-fi book suggestions for our book club. Anyways, I expect that not every book club member will be pleased with each book chosen. I've experienced that before (Running With Scissors) and I actually didn't have the strength to finish the book. Oh, well. At the same time I totally enjoyed books like It's Not About the Bike and Three Cups of Tea. As far as I understand the purpose of a book club, it is for all of us to share our passion for well written literature, be it poetry, non-fiction, fiction, or plain cookbooks |
Okay, I think we have some interest here...I personally don't like sci-fi but maybe we can add that genre in...I'll take a note of those interested and now, lets come up with some suggestion authors...I personally like the murder/myster/drama stuff...Let's pick something and start the read October 1st. Gives us time to decide on a book and some time to get it...We can figure on reading a certain number of chapeters a week so we can all "discuss" it here! Nights are getting longer and colder...great time for the start of a book club! Want to go with something off the NEw York Times Best Seller list???? |
If never belonged to a book club but a friend does and often suggests books I should read. She's been spot on. If she wasn't busy recarpeting her house.......so moving stuff about tonight, I'd ask her I was just downloading some stuff to Kindle and saw two I thought might be worthy of y'alls opinion: Only Time Will Tell by Jefrey Archer and The Fearless Mrs. Goodwin by Elizabeth Mitchell Others please come up with other suggestions. |
So far I ahve the following as interested in our new book club: Anna ( Fairy Godmother) Vance ( Fluffernutter ) Dawn ( Got Sheep ) Jennifer (Millielover) Karen (SheepieZone) Melissa P. David (Baba) Ilene (ICH) Brenda ( AuntyBren) Kathie (Kajochen) And me...Diane (Ashley) I have Paula O. and Ravensport as a maybe... Did I miss anyone??? |
Count me in. It too depends on the book. I like mysteries, who dunnits no sci-fi. Dean Koonz is as close to scifi as I get. Like Koonz |
I think I may be as well.......put me down |
Me! I like good sci fi (hard to find) and few who dunnits, but some. Like many of the classics, a lot of contemporary, almost anything except history. I read the recent Cleopatra bio that got such raves and was hugely disappointed and somewhat bored. Not what I expected. |
Did I miss the deadline? I need some motivation to get back to reading. I recently realized just how much I haven't been reading, so this just might be what I need. |
No deadline yet. I'm hoping we can get everyone on board and start the read by October 1st. The idea is to get involved in reading and try things "outside of the box" from what you usually read. There won't be a single book we all like, I'm sure! But that's why we're a "club" and will meet here maybe once a week and discuss the book and our thoughts on it. I'm game for any book anyone suggests. Hopefully we'll have it decided by the end of the week so we have time to get it for the 1st...how's that sound? |
Count me in too. I think it's a great idea!! |
Sounds good |
Diane Since this was your idea first, why don't you pick the book for this round. Than from the list you have of participants, we will each take a turn at picking a book. Since we are a big group, each member should have to pick one book approximately once a year. That's just my suggestion |
I am all for this, my only problem is I don't buy books, I get them from the library so I may have to wait to get the book. If no one minds this, I'm in. |
Okay...I will pick the first book. And then we can go around. I wanted to suggest that idea but didn't want to sound like I wanted to go first! Yikes so much pressure on me now to pick a good first book I'll pick one by the middle of the week...if those of you are getting from the library and acan't get in time, let us know and we'll just extend the first weeks reading...Want everyone interested to be able to participate...I am so impressed with all the avid readers we have hear on the forum! Hey Ron, would you or Joan like to join us????? |
Sounds like a good plan. I will likely try and get mine as library books as well. If it has a long wait, I'll likely cave and get it on my Kindle. |
I'm interested too... I read constantly... usually a book in a day or two though but I can slow it down by reading more than one at a time. I love sci fi too LOL I like almost all genre's as long as it's well written. I don't like mindless fluff.... |
I have heard that some public libraries offer e-books now. I don't know how they do it but if you contact your local library they can tell you if they offer this and how it works. My friend belongs to a book club where they each take a turn picking the book and they have their books picked well in advance. We could arrange for the first 4 or 5 people to pick their book so that we have a list of future books. This will help the library users and we can always give the list to our families as present ideas. Again, just a suggestion. |
Sounds fun. Do you know how many chapters you'll read in what time period? I may be joining you. |
Yes, a lot of libraries offer e-books now. My library system has an extensive e-book collection. It has been almost two years since I have purchased an e-book for my Sony e-reader. I get everything from the library now. It is saving me a fortune and not only that I don't have to physically go to the library. I can sit at my computer at my convenience and borrow what I want when I want. I can also be half way around the world and borrow a book. I love my library and their e-book collection! Kathie |
E-gads, One of my passions is: I love to read a good book...Problem is when its good I don't want to put it down. Which means if the book picked is good, I may finish long before everyone else. My Kindle gets a lot of use, also at work there's a book exchange(kinda), bring in a finished book and pick out a new one. Count me in...although I may finish long before anyone else. |
I'd be interested in joining! Like Laurel, I love sci-fi (I used to belong to a sci-fi/fantasy book club). I'm a big fantasy nut, such as Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, and Christopher Moore. But I also enjoy classics like Catch-22, Anna Karenina, and so on. Basically, if there is a strong plot, I really enjoy it. I've been really interested in starting Walter Mosely... is anyone familiar with him? He writes Noir books, most notably Easy Jones novels. There was a film back in the 90's staring Denzel Washington called Devil in a Blue Dress, that was based on his Easy Jones character. But the timeline in which to read a book may be a challenge. I'm not sure I could commit to reading a book weekly (depending on length of the novel). Would you consider giving maybe a two week grace period? |
