Jumping

I've been jumping Simon at 20inches since we started training...well a while ago.

Today I got curious and measured him....when he would hold still, I think I got between 24-25 inches. He's bigger than I thought.

Should I be jumping him higher? Since I've never entered him in any events he's never been officially measured.

It depends on what he can jump (easily, safely and long term), and also on what class you want.

For AKC, if they are over 22", they jump 24".
So for example, Chewie measured 23.5", so would jump 24". Many of the heavy boned OES jump preferred, as it's easier on them long term. Preferred jumps 4" less than what they would normally jump.
So, I could run him in regular at 24", or 20" in preferred.

In class, I ran him both ways, and got input from my instructors and classmates. When he was 3 yrs, there wasn't much difference.
However when he was 4 and ready to compete, he had developed more bone and density (he's a late bloomer 8) ) and there was a very noticeable effort required at 24", where at 20" he still looked smooth. So we opted to compete in Preferred. We do so many sports, and we love being active. I didn't want my decision of pushing for a higher jump height to cause any injury or make things less fun. We are in this for the long haul!

And all the different organizations have different ways of doing pretty much the same thing. CPE had 3 different levels, I believe. We just entered the regular one, as that one came out to be 20" jumps in CPE. USDAA tends to make jump heights be higher than AKC. I think NADAC is about the same as AKC....may be off on some of these, but you get the idea..I hope!
Sorry, but this just cracks me up each time I see it:
