Also, anything to do about the paw in the meantime? Thanks! |

I would put an antiseptic ointment on it to prevent infection, then rub aloe vera on to keep it soft. Maybe you should call your vet also. |
How long are the walks you are giving your dog? Cassiopia's and Baxter's walks are from 3 to 5 miles a day - on pavement. I haven't seen any problems with their pads. Although after reading your post, I have to admit that I did a quick check.
I agree though that you should put some ointment on the dogs foot to prevent infection and if it doesn't clear up in a few days get to the veterinarian. Good Luck, Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Sharkey |
Oscar also has an issue with raw spots on his pads. He gets walked at least two miles a day on pavement. I walked our first sheepie as much or more than this guy, and he built up callouses, no problem. But Oscar has been having trouble since we brought him home. The vet wasn't able to help, except to suggest that we put booties on him when we walk outside. Even with the boots, he still can get a spot here or there, so I think he might be getting carpet burns as well from tearing around the house during his "puppy crazies". The only thing I can come up with is that the pads of his feet are pink, and I have heard that pink skin is generally more sensitive on dogs than darker pigmented skin. That's just my own, completely undocumented theory..... |
