Chauncey was doing well for the first hour and a half, off leash, interacting with the dogs, having a good time, etc.....then he became Mr. Bad Behavior. He started snapping at any dog that invaded his " space ". It was hot and mid-day when he started this crap, so he went on leash and Bob took him into the barn to cool off for about 30 mins ( it was much cooler in there and Cindy had ceiling fans as well as other fans running ). We kept him on leash after that and he layed at our feet, but he continued to snap when another dog tried to interact to the point where he got a tap on the head from mom. Chauncey does not like the heat, he only goes out long enough to do what he needs to do and is right back in. His coat is about 2-3 inches which is the longest we've had it this summer since it has been so hot & humid. Chauncey is boarded at least one weekend a month and is out with the large breed group and always get's a good report. There are several dogs in his play group. He did snarl/snap at our son's dog once about two years ago but Rusty had tried to mount him several times. Rusty got the hint and they continued to play. I'm concerned and embarrased by his behavior. I would love any input. |

I have no input but chauncey is cute as a button. No one talked about him after you left so he was not THAT bad. Maybe he was hot and/ or maybe it was because he was on a leash?? I did not see when the snapping started so I do not know if he started off leash or not. For everyones info it was not like I am a fightin dog it was more of a quick crowley snappy thing, everytime a dog came near him. Do you agree cathy?? It was so great you all could come and you guys are welcome back anytime. Please give Chauncey a butt scratch from us!! I hope you get some input and ideas why he did this. |
Maybe others will read it differently but I think maybe Chauncey had just had enough for the day. The snapping at other dogs was telling them this too. We were driving home from the grocery store and a guy had a dog on a leash and two men were there also. One guy is putting his hand out trying to get the dog to sniff his hand... the dog turns his head. He keeps pressing the dog to sniff his hand. The dog walks behind his owner to avoid the interaction. Yet the man persists. We passed by so I didn't see what happened after that. We sometimes need to step up and stop the interaction if we can tell our dogs have had enough. I think it was good your husband removed him for a bit of quiet time. Nothing to be embarrassed about... our dogs have limits or just off days too. |
If he's not snapping at all dogs, all the time, but after a certain point, it's his way of telling other dogs to "back off" since he's not in play mood. My old dog did this too. One day it would be after an hr of play, one day not even after 3 hours of play, on certain days he would be just snappy to start with. I think it's his way of letting the excited dog know this. If he does this to all the dogs he see on the street, then I'd troubleshoot for behavioral issues. But to me it seems like he was just being expressive. |
Cindy he started off leash and was doing well for the 1st hour and 1/2 interacting. It was about the time when Piccadilly arrived. They are quite possibly from the same father. When we tried to introduced them he snapped at her, it was then we put him on leash. He proceded to snap so we kept him on leash. We did participate in the games even the off leash one and he did fine. We had a great time and Bobby has mentioned how wonderful all the dogs were and how much he enjoyed seeing them. BTW...he was sneeking them all pieces of hamburger He has also thanks to your event, realized the importance of rescue. |
wait a cotton pickin minute here??!!?? did chauncey have kfc? apple pie and ice cream?? was there whipped cream??? |
Chauncey will be 6 on Thursday, and had never behaved like this. |
It was a back off, I've had enough. We had been there 90 mins off leash, getting along well. But then he became an a**hole. Sir Chauncey of Tammany Manor had better learn he is not a PRINCE. |
Maybe he had just had enough. I know that after an hour and a half of socializing, I want to snap too! |
Kathy if it is not normal behaviour happening with Chancey after 6 year, then maybe a vet check might be in order just to make sure no niggly areas making him cranky after awhile with other dogs, have a full check over as he is 6 you never know might be just a sore/niggly spot making him a bit angst with other doggies. Rule that out first. |
Now I know why all the dogs were hanging in the barn I thought they wanted to lay on the cool cement!! Bob was inticing all who entered with goodies!! Good for him By the way in the first pic that ron posted for fairy godmother is anna running with nikki the dog I pulled sat:) |
Heat zaps the strength and composure of humans and dogs. The fact he was fine initially indicates he is good in social situations....maybe not larger groups. He was just tired and hot. Yes, at 6 he could be having some issues with body aches, etc. Something to watch for. I guarantee mine would be real AHs from the moment they arrived. MO hates all strange dogs...and isn't to pleased with the ones she knows. Jack would just bark at everyone initally and then walk away. Fortunately Harry would want to play with all, except his bad legs would prevent much action. |
well susan, if your surrounded by ah's, the furkind are much better. |
