He now raises a leg 6-8" straight off the ground. The problem is he doesn't roll his body even when he gets it up a good ways so he pees on his front foot! So far it is only on flat ground, no marking. I have no problem with him marking his outside territory. |

I remember when Rufus started doing it, now he's so enthusiastic he goes off balance sometimes With regards to the pee going over the tummy & back of the front legs... that's part of having a boy! I shampoo & dry Ru's 'smelly bits' a couple of times a week and keeping baby wipes by the door to use as your boy comes inside is useful too |
I have some who leg lift all the time, some who are about 50:50.... we have 5 male dogs here. It is a somewhat learned behavior, but they don't need to see or live with another male to do it. If a male dog has peed there in the past, they instinctively lift the leg to pee on it and if possible, higher! It is also dominance related - there are MANY female dogs who attempt the same thing...with less height of course! |
^^^^^ a lot of dominance involved. MO used to lift a leg just to reinforce she was #1. Pretty strong girl to lift and squat. I'd prefer the boys just squat to bee, with luck they miss the front legs entirely. |

My lone boy is an avid leg lifter; some times he just stretches himself out, but he wouldn't be caught dead squatting. For all that he doesn't pee on himself. He does, however, occasionally sprinkle one of his sisters It doesn't seem to be intentional, though....? Kristine |

Kristine Good genes, as Chewie doesn't ever pee on himself either But Simon has an uncanny knack of getting his head peed on...you'd really think he'd learn! I've watched it happen - it's totally Simon's fault - walking under checking things out.... At least he's easy to clean up though. |
got sheep wrote: Good genes, as Chewie doesn't ever pee on himself either I don't think I can take credit as some of their male relatives, just not from this litter as far as I know, are your standard issue stinky. And, Simon - why am I not surprised? Coco used to walk under Tom when he was peeing. Usually right after Marnie had spent 6 hours grooming and bathing her.... Kristine |
Speaking of cocking Guinness has started to cock his leg for a spritz here and there in the house!!!!!!Not a full pee but just to show he is king of the house I guess (I have had so many fosters in and out ..think that is why??) No yucky smell like a UTI and it has been happening for about 4 mos He pees a long stream outside. I may tie something in a knot if he dosent stop |
Neither of our other two oes ever really lifted their legs peeing but Butchy has since he was a pup. He is neutered so have no idea why. He's really been a different fella since we had to put Tripper down a couple wks ago. Tripper was boss and there were times Butchy was afraid to go where he wanted so we'd have a leg lifted on a door or chair. Since then the only inside mess we had was the day we took Tripper in and I'm sure Butchy sensed things weren't right. |
My first male sheepie never lifted his leg to pee. Just did sort of the lean forward type thing...My current male at almost five does not usually lift his leg ither. Once in a while he will, but mostly, its another lean forward go...Both of mine were nuetered. Not sure if that makes a difference... |
It doesn't. Mine's neutered. His brother is intact. Ironically it's the neutered one who gets all worked up when the girls are in season and tries to hump them. Theory: they really do think with their gonads, and when you remove them it's sort of like performing a lobotomy Kristine |
My boys started to cock their legs when their 'bits' dropped at about 6 months!!!! As they got older, they tended to just throw their back legs out and sort of squat. |
Dexter is getting better at it; now he aims a little and manages to hit the rock flower bed border sometimes. Doesn't pee on his front foot much anymore but often walks through his puddle. He seems to be ambidextrous and sometimes undecided; he has cocked a leg, started then stopped and raised the other to finish. |
My only leg lifter is Harry and then he can't lift very high. His peculiarity is he must over mark Simone.......I sometimes wonder if he could pee if nobody showed him where first. He doesn't overmark Jack's pee. I love all this silliness in dogs. |
Chauncey does a stretch and pee in the yard usually but on walks lifts his legs ( he is also ambidexterous). We have not had a problem with squirting on himself. |
Fluffytail wrote: As they got older, they tended to just throw their back legs out and sort of squat. Bero does the same thing. It started the day after he was neutered. He ads some sort of duck walk to it, though. Funny guy! |

With any luck, the squat may stick....... |
Mine squats still, he wll squat by the wall but aim up the wall. I think hes too lazy to lift his leg haha |
Dexter Dog My male sheepie lifts his leg BUT my problem is he marks certain People He will mark my 24 y/o daughter every time he sees her ... And he will mark some people at the dog park but not others Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to stop this behavior It really is embarrassing as all I seem to be able to do is a nervous chuckle and offer to pay for cleaning he happily bounces off to pee on a tree.
