Like if I was her to sit I make a fist facing up. If I want her to lie down - I have the fist facing down. If I want her to roll over I twist my fish in the direction I want her to go. She does the same thing if I want her to come to me - I can call her but she won't listen - but if I tap my leg with my palm she comes to me in an instant. Does anyone else find that hand signals work better with their dogs than the actual words? |

Does she react at all to sudden noises, noises that do not make a vibration on the floor or anything else she is touching? |
Hmmm... I'm not sure if she responds when I say things softly, so I end up sort of shaking my voice when I call her name. M-Momo-o-o!
She responds best when I slap my hands together to get her attention or when I raise my voice. It's really hard to tell sometimes if she is responding to what she is seeing rather than what I am saying. Because if I try to do a different hand signal for wanting her to sit for example, sometimes she tries out different things if I don't give her a treat right away. Like rolling over or laying down. Like she is trying to break the code? It seems that most loud noises have vibrations though. Is there a way I can tell if she responding to words rather than signals? |
Integra, I think she responds to your hand signals better because she thinks you have a treat in your fist! I know Bailey can hear me, but it's much easier to get his attention when he thinks there's a treat involved. When he's off the leash in the yard the only way to get him to come is to wave a treat - Mom without treat is less interesting than the backyard, Mom with treat is the most interesting creature in the world! Just keep in mind that she's still a puppy and she doesn't have the attention span for rigorous obedience training yet.

You are probably right! She probably does think I have treats in my hand!
I'm not being rigerous right now - after sit, lay down and roll over I've pretty much much keep trying to let her do them over again so it makes her feel good about herself. I still can't wait for puppy classes though... |
