As I've aged my body has been changing, not in ways that I like so I've started to exercise and cut down on some of the junk food that been my companion. So I've done something that I haven't done in a LONG time...I've started jogging , and whoa doggy am I outta shape. It hurts...literally. I jog till I'm out of breath...not very far and then I walk till I can breath again and then do it all over again. I do this over and over for a half hour to fourty five minutes and yes I do take the dogs with me, makes life interesting. I've also been doing some exercise's to firm up some (sagging) parts, meaning crunches and arm and leg work. My thought is that if anyone else is doing this, or wants to try, we can come here to get tips and insight and web sights that they found interesting or have helped. We could use this sight to cry on each others shoulder or celebrate achievements or just to whine(jogging really hurts ) Anyone want to join me on my aching journey? |
|
I've found one really cool websight. If you've ever wondered how far you've jogged or walked or biked it called Mapmyrun. I was wondering as I huffed and puffed my way along how far I've really gone, the sight tells me. You do have to sign up but then just put in your home address and off you go. |
wow good luck, keep us updated with your progress it really helps if you do that. I go to slimming world every week been going for about 5 years. I need to shift 2lbs this week or will have to pay and am not doing that! Got myself a lovely exercise bike from a car boot sale last Sunday only £5 and in the shops it is £145. Got it mostly to exercise my knees as according to x rays they are wearing out, but it is making my tummy muscles hurt as well. xx |
I think that running would kill me, although I wish that I were still fit. I miss playing soccer. Good luck in your efforts! |
Pam - I really should!! If you want a good "getting started" running site, this is a fun one: http://running.about.com/c/ec/10.htm In case the link doesn't work - it's "3 weeks to a 30 minute running habit" on about.com It sends you an email everyday for what your workout is. It was nice to be surprised each day what the workout will be. LeAnne found it ......and she, I and Keith almost did it all. I need to restart it. We ran into that beastly hot weather and dropped out This is really sad for me, as I was a distance and cross country runner through high school and college - varsity and all that, even our women's cross country team made it to nationals in college...and this basic program was tough... |
Pam, you go girl!! I'll cheer from the sidelines. Actually I should start walking!! Running? Not for 40 years. Arthritis in feet, knee and hip.......and other places above the waist need to be tamed. Haven't been to pool for the summer, can't stand the kids. So you start the running and I'll return to the pool.......wonder if I can swim a length? |
Pam, I really admire you because I have never liked running and avoid it all costs. I am more of a walker. That seems to be just as effective for me. Unfortunately I gravitate way too much to the couch. I will be cheering you on and hoping your efforts provide a little motivation to me in St. Louis |
Good for you Pam. I am not a runner, even as a kid I wasn't a runner. I have been trying to use the bands to increase upper arm strength, another thing that seems to go as you age and that comes along with the sagging. I was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica so that has really slowed me down. Can't even squat much anymore, can get down, can't get up so with prednisone that is getting better but of course the meds don't help either. Still have a few good years in me I hope and would really like to be able to do some of the things I used to be able to. |
If you want an exercise that is less impact and a LOT of fun, get into Zumba! I've been doing it for a month and it never feels like I am exercising. And I'm not ashamed to admit, my butt and stomach has never looked so good! |

That was fun, I have 2 left feet so did end up on the floor once but it did help. |
ICH wrote: What is zumba? Years ago I did the dancercize or whatever it was called. That was fun, I have 2 left feet so did end up on the floor once but it did help. Zumba is dance, the purest form is Latin inspired dance with Salsa, Meringue, Calypso, and so on. I'm finding that Zumba can also be more regionally specific. I live on the border of Illinois/Iowa and a lot of our classes are more hip hop inspired, but we also do Latin, country, swing, and other styles. We have men, women, and young kids dancing and all ages and ethnicities, too. It's such a great 'party' feeling. We're all dancing and having a great time. |
Sounds like fun, doubt there is anything like that up here. |
Go to http://www.zumba.com there is a tab for finding classes nearby. I was shocked at how many there are in my neighborhood! |
Hi Pam..... Since I need to get off my dead butt and do something as well I will join you in doing some type of exercise. I need to decide what. I have a easy glider that is gathering dust and I keep telling myself to get back on it because it's low impact. Swimming is out because there is no way I will put a suit on. Having had both hips replaced,(didn't think that would happen at this age) a blown ACL and torn rotator. I would love a trampoline but my dr. said no. Zumba would be fun if I had someone to do it with. I do walk my dogs but they don't seem to want to go that far plus it is 2 walks for me. An I still have problems with one hip. I checked out the zumba website and found a couple places close to my house so I will call for prices. Zumba also has dvd's to do at home. So Pam, I will start tonight on my glider and see how long I'll last, then start building up my time. Great idea to start a plan. |
I didn't mean that everyone needs to start jogging. What I meant is that everyone needs to start somewhere and we could start...or think about it and come here to talk about how things are going. Don't like to jog, great...how about walking, or zumba, or a DVD. I don't want to pressure anyone but I know that some have talked about losing some weight or just getting back into shape and we could come here to share stories. Talk about what works...for you, and what doesn't. |
I would join in....I have signed into fitness pal which is free and on line to track food intake and log exercise but of coarse I have let it slide this summer. Especially hard to get motivated when the numbers don't really seem to be changing much. Maybe I'll get back onto to it since I really should lose 10 or 15 lbs. Getting older stinks with my metabolism slowing down and all. |
I used MyFitnessPal for a long time. My problem was my honesty with myself I never realized, till I joined Weight Watchers that, though I was eating lean, boneless, skinless chicken breast... I was eating a HUGE portion that was twice the size of what I SHOULD have been eating. It didn't take me long to figure out that I was two portion sizes for every meal. In 5 years I gained 50lbs! I've been successful in pulling off 47 of those pounds in the last year though |
well erin, that deserves kudos. |

Ya polka, I look like a dork doing that, can never quite get the bounce right. I can do the chicken dance tho. |
Pam congratulations on wanting to start running. I tried but my knees hurt way to bad. I found out I have arthritis in them, and the ortho said no running for me. Today I made the move. I joined CURVES. Resistance training and cardio. I'll check in in a week. How is it going for you Pam? Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
I had a recent major wake-up call....I'd already made a decision to change my habits 6 months ago. Quit smoking, drastically changed my diet, lost 27 lbs. Then all of a sudden I started experiencing some chest pains and shortness of breath about month ago. Went to the Dr....ended up with a cardiologist, went in for an angiogram and came out with 2 stents to repair 2 90% blockages Anyway, glad I already made the changes, now only have to tweak the diet a bit. Gonna start a water aerobics class this week. Still have 34 lbs to lose...so yeah, definitely going to join in the getting more active plan! |
Mary, sorry to hear about the stents Glad your feeling better and starting to exercise! I need to get into a more healthy routine as well. I started swimming again last week and it feels great! Now if I could just say no to the sweets. I've had two cupcakes today already (it was my daughters 13th birthday yesterday and we have lots of leftovers). Maybe I will send the cupcakes to my neighbors, out of sight. Great topic. Let's keep each other motivated. |

Let's keep each other motivated. Yeah, I have a really HARD time with sweets too...chocolate is my downfall. So, I've been jogging for how many years now? I'm still at it, it still hurts BUT slowly I'm going a LITTLE further and found that getting my breath back is coming faster. The scale hasn't changed and neither has my body. To quote "Rome wasn't built in a day" So I will continue on, the dogs think its great. How is everyone else doing? |
I'm slowly trucking a long. I've FINALLY been able to fit into my size 7 bondage pants comfortably. Yay! I still want to lose these last stubborn 4lbs though! If you have a chocolate sweet tooth, have you ever tried Arctic Zero before? It's an ice cream-esk dessert that is made with a whey protein and an entire pint is only 150 calories. There are a lot of different flavors, but by far, my favorite is the chocolate one. You can find it in the health food section/organic section of the grocery store. |
It wasn't healthy, but my weekend bout with food poisoning, I lost 5 pounds (and that was 2 days after, so that was what was lost beyond the dehydration loss) I will be mowing with the push mower in over 90 degrees and high humidity tomorrow (that's my day off, bummer), so my exercise for the day will be met and exceeded no doubt.... I'll see how long I make it - we have about 6 hours worth with the push mower. |
Yowzer! Don't you have a ride on lawn mower? |
* Capt. Obvious Danger wrote: Yowzer! Don't you have a ride on lawn mower? Yes, but it's an old Snapper, and only Todd knows how to make it run. He's working corn harvest (human corn) for Birds Eye Foods and he goes in at 4:30am and gets home 7-8pm. So I have to mow. It's been about 3-4 weeks, as we have had a drought with no rain that long...so real patchy. Some dead grass and lots of topped out weeds...horrible looking |
oh that is the trick to getting off a plateau.......food poisoning and here I was thinking I needed to work out more! |
sheepiegail wrote: oh that is the trick to getting off a plateau.......food poisoning and here I was thinking I needed to work out more! Nope. Simply visit Wisconsin. (Hi, Dawn! Great seeing you! ) And, for the record, no, it wasn't me. We ate out Kristine |
sheepiegail wrote: oh that is the trick to getting off a plateau.......food poisoning and here I was thinking I needed to work out more! Let me send you some beef patties...... OK, 2.5 hours of mowing are enough. On to less active projects Still need to be able to teach classes tonight! We are just about at 90, and so humid. I think I'll be bringing jumps to The Paw and working Chewie a bit there before class. Too freakin hot. |
got sheep wrote: Let me send you some beef patties...... They've always said fish was better for you... Hot here too, but I'm at work in A/C. Probably won't work the kids tonight. Sybil and Dazz worked their butts off last night in class. Only a couple of days of heat, then a nice, cool weekend. Come January we'll both be wishing for 90 degrees.... Kristine |
zumba is they way to go i have been a runner all my life till i broke my foot a few yrs ago ..zumba class for 45 minutes burns over 800 cal.. if you really get jumping |
How's everyone doing? I've been getting to Curves 3x a week. Trying for 4. Not getting on the scale until I weigh in at Curves in a month. Trying to eat healthy. Not snacking between meals. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
Not so well here. We went to Wisconsin for Labor Day weekend and Gramma Schlueter LOVES to feed me. Really. Loves. To. FEED. Me. She will not take no for an answer when she pushes peach chiffon pie at me (kinda grossly sweet) and other 1960's inspired sweets. I gained a pound. I'm hoping with going back to zumba this week and eating right to get it off again. To date, I still have no idea how to tell Gramma thanks, but, really, I'm full, and have her believe me. |
I've kept off the 5 pounds I lost from my food poisoning... Does that count?? I try to eat healthy and keep physically busy. If I stay busy I burn calories, but even better - I don't snack!! |
got sheep wrote: I've kept off the 5 pounds I lost from my food poisoning... Does that count?? I try to eat healthy and keep physically busy. If I stay busy I burn calories, but even better - I don't snack!! The 5 pounds...good...I think. How on earth did you learn or resist snacks? My scale has gone down by a couple pounds, but I don't count on that. Its the way my clothes fit that I use. Not much change there. I haven't jogged since I had gout but I have been walking. The boys and I went out and walked to the park(1/2 hour walk there) and walked around on the walking path, got a drink from the bubbler and walked back home. It took about 1.5 hours and the boys crashed in front of the fan when we got home. |
sheepiegail wrote: oh that is the trick to getting off a plateau.......food poisoning and here I was thinking I needed to work out more! I lost 15 pounds after a week in the hospital for gallstones. Does that count? Here's to healthier days |

And I'm not ashamed to admit, my butt and stomach has never looked so good! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Zumba!!! I have it for the Wii (Nintendo gaming system). I am fairly fit (belly dancing, dancing of any sort, eliptical, walking the dogs, hiking, etc) and Zumba kicks my butt!! I would highly recommend it to anyone that hates to work out. ( *cough* me)It doesn't even feel like your working out. I do it daily it's sooooo much fun! Fyi, you can get Zumba for any newer console (gaming system), on DVD's or take classes. For me its not about losing weight (I'm 5'7 and 135lbs) It really is about staying in shape and being healthy. I eat whatever I want so I can't really advise you on how to quit eating sweets. I would probably get hunted down and killed if I put my daily diet on here. It's rarely really health food. Get a juicer! (Fruit juicer not steriods) OMG, best thing you can invest in. (besides Zumba dvd's) I love mine and it's a great way to get extra stuff that your body needs, and the first time you have a glass you'll be hooked. |
