TRANSPORTING REINDEER

This is a little odd but my cousin is looking into adding reindeer from MI to her herd and is debating about transport. Typically she would drive out but since it is a lot farther than usual I figured I would check with those of you out that way if you know of any transportation covering that sort of thing. I recommended the horse transport people I know on this end but am not to sure if they would transport reindeer.

Good one, Cindy!! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:
I didn't even know we actually had reindeer in upstate NY  And just how would one get the reindeer to transport? Sorry to sound like a city-slicker, but, do people have reindeer like horses???
We have a reindeer farm not too far from where we live. I was surprised too but think they're used for meat.

dang i was just gonna say that
well, that's what our local reindeer farm transports in. horse trailers that is. :D
I'm assuming your cousin is also in NY??

I would check with some of the smaller haulers. A horse or stock trailer would certainly be on the large (tall) side, but there are so many out there. On one end (NY or MI) there have to be some trailer owners who would be willing to hire out for the trip.

No need for surprised. I grew up in Norway where reindeer meat is considered a bit of a delicacy.

Too gamey (though mildly so) for me, but what I'd give for some mountain range lamb...sigh

Sorry, no help on the transportation end of things. I was thinking stock trailer as well, but probably some private hire.

I walked right into that Santa :santa: joke.

She actually uses the reindeer as part of her Christmas tree business. they have reindeer, goats, sheep, a yak, and new this year emus. Not really sure how emus figure into a Nativity scene. The reindeer are listed as Santa's reindeer.

2 years ago she did use my horse trailer to get two new reindeer which immediately after unloading into the pasture the male and female jumped the 5 foot tall fence and ran across the adjacent fields. VERY VERY hard to catch and boy to they move fast. they eventually got close enough to catch the female but had to get a tranquilizer gun to get the male. They have never done that again but I guess they were a little skittish in their new home.

they were just thinking of options rather than do the 2 day drive there and back. Plus if she wants more than two I don't think my trailer could more unless she went with babies.
gail, maybe there are some closer to home, lists several in new york.

OK, it seems to me that there might be an easier way to get more reindeer, since she has a male and a female. Not quicker, but would be very adorable.
she was looking to improve the genetics. they usually have one fawn a year but reindeer can be prone to some very strange and quick acting diseases which is why she was thinking about getting new deer from a different stock.
Makes sense to introduce new genes into the pool. Is reindeer semen a viable option? Easier to transport.

I know nothing about reindeer genetics so perhaps the doe is too old.

I think that's exactly what she's trying to accomplish, just that the container would be a male reindeer. :D LOL

Are we talking caribou? We saw these in Denali National Park.

This guy was a bit shy...
