The issue I am having lately is his growling. If I speak to him in a low voice, or sometimes when he is sleepy, he growls at me and won't look me in the eye/avoids eye contact, but at the same time will have body language that he is happy, even licking me while growling. I think of it as him talking, because the older he has gotten the more talkative he is (when we play cuddle on the ground he is very vocal). He even matches syllables of me talking when we play and I love it. I can say "talk to me" and he'll do a playful whimper-bark. However, sometimes when new people come over to the house and greet me, he growls like that at them even though he seems excited and it scares people. Is he growling as a warning or is that just his way of talking?? I don't want to scold him if it's just talking, and he has never expressed any other aggressive behavior towards me or anyone else. Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated! -Monica |

Monica...Welcome~~~~ Heart, my 4 year old OES, grunts like a piggy if you try to pick her up, if she lays down, if she gets up...(I guess it could be a growl, but we always refer her sounds as grunts.) If I have the nerve to talk on the phone for ANY length of time, she starts with the grunting that turns into a whine that turns back into a grunt.... So I think strange noises are common in this wonderful breed~~~ They just HAVE to communicate with their herd... and each one finds his /her own special language.... |
Val - I have oinkers. However, and though I'm a real stickler about growling, as in I won't accept it, I did know one OES who talked in melodious growls and put his entire body into it when he was really happy <g> Newcomers weren't convinced it was just talking unless they were longtime in the breed, so maybe we had more "talkers" (and less oinkers? ) in the old days? His line is almost gone now, although Judi's Harry's great-great grandfather was this dog's grandfather. So maybe we should ask Judi if Harry talks? Kristine |
Thanks for the great responses so far! Gotta love the OES' unique way o communicating. I forgot to mention that he only does it when I talk to him, never my boyfriend. |
Does your boyfriend growl at you? Maybe the dog has more common sense and knows how to 'talk' to you. Vance |
Simon growls at me. He also growls at other dogs when playing. I used to correct it but now I realize he's just giving his opinion. His best growl is when he's half on the bed beside me and is rubbing his head all over the bed...and me and growling to beat the band. Its not mean...he's just talking. |
Baley is a 'talker'--most of the time it starts as a soft growl and then he sort of does a wooo--wooo-wooo thing. It is hard to describe but the growls are definitely different when he is 'talking'! |
panda does this long growl followed by yips...she also ''wookie'' talks all of the time... |
