Grooming charges: mats

I have a new groomer. I was pretty spoiled with my groomer had a great deal but she moved. So I'm adjusting to new charges and wondered if this is normal. When Harley had surgery a few months ago, it was just about time to shave her down for the summer. But I waited a bit so her incisions could heal well. In the meantime I didn't worry too awful much about maintaining her because I knew she would be shaved down in a few weeks. So she ended up with a few mats on her chest and behind her ear. They weren't huge, not super tight and not down to the skin. Just unattended for a couple weeks.

The new groomer charged an additional $10 "matt charge". Now I would understand that if they were combing her out and keeping her coat. But they were shaving her - and its not like she was actually matted down all over.

Being I had them groomed so often with my old groomer I rarely have matts on any of them anyway. But this groomer is a lot more expensive so I am going less often and doing more myself. So is this a normal charge?

I don't groom for anyone by my dogs in show homes & that is done free of charge. But I do know that most groomers will charge more if there are mats. Depending on how they are trimming your dog (scissored or with a longer blade) they need to get the mats out before they can continue. If they are being shaved down with a #7 blade or a #10 blade, then the blade should go under the mat. Years ago, before I started doing my own gromming, showing & breeding, I had a great groomer who took care of my OES at the time. Once, (and I learned my lesson 8O ) I got busy with a graduation party coming up for my son & I got behind in the grooming. This was back in 1988. So, 23 years ago. She generally charged me $65.00 to brush out, bathe & hand scissor my girl into a puppy cut in May. That day she called me to tell me if I wanted her done that way it was going to cost close to $125.00 due to the mats. Even to shave her down (which is what I opted for) would cost $80.00. We went for the shave down due to the fact that we didn't feel she could stand the hours of dematting. Even at that, she had never had clippers taken to her entire body before & the cost was still $15.00 more than my regular charge.
My groomer charges $25 per hour for dematting. I always try to do as much as I can from home, because I know my dogs are a handful to begin with.

Right...I get that. But specifically, should you expect to be charged a mat charge if they're being shaved down? Nor de-matting because they're staying in full coat - that's understandable.
When I get my girsl cut down, I like to try and leave an inch on them- so yes, they need to be de-matted for that. And if the mats are bad, I can see a clipper not being able to get through some mats- we get some bad ones under the girls' chins, and i'd much rather have them removed before shaving.
When I shave my dogs I use a ten blade all over, no guard on it or anything, just zoom. I've done it for a few of my puppy people too, and it doesn't matter one bit for shaving a dog down that way if there are mats or not.
I think I would've rather she integrated the $10 in and didn't complain about the mats. I'd pay a groomer a premium if they'd do their job well and shut up.
I am a groomer, i do charge a small extra fee for dematting. But if i am clipping off an oes as long as its going to be short theres no problem and no extra fee. its when they want more than a 3f blade, then i have to dematt.
Alot of groomers will not dematt. Aparently the animal wellfare act says any more than half an hour is inhumane and the groomer can be prosecuted with causing unecissary harm to the dog (they have never owned an oes!)
And its also a case of if the dog can take it, if they squeel at every pull then its clipped off.
On other dogs that come in like say a shihtzu thats not seen a brush for 6-12 months and the coat is pelted and comes off in one piece i charge £10 extra because it takes longer, and why should they pay the same as little fluffy who comes every 6 weeks?
1/2 an hour :lmt:

Ooops I am in for it then :sidestep:

I can spend 4 hours a day when recovering Archies coat after he's been in the kennels!

That can last upto two weeks, mind you after a couple of days or more he hides in his cage(his safe zone) :sidestep: when I go anywhere near his brushes! so all grooming is a no go.

He hasn't been shaved down yet
Demat fees are normal for matted dogs needing to be shaved down. The ideal grooming process is:
1. Bathe
2. Fluff
3. Cut

Clipping/scissoring a dirty coat creates quite an ugly and uneven cut. A matted coat should NEVER get wet or the matts will get tighter and closer to the skin; therefore, a matted dog will need 2 haircuts:
1. "Pre-cut" to shave the matts off
2. Bathe
3. Fluff
4. "Finish" cut so you get a smooth and clean line.

Demat fees are typically based on how long the "pre-cut" takes.
My dogs are so difficult to groom, I pay anything to get them done! They go every 4 weeks so matting isn't a huge issue here. Except under the chin - which is their special place to "hide" crumbs of food and water for later 8O

But I know my groomer does charge a dematting fee. Not sure what it is but I know when I was using the mibile groomer, they charged $1.00 per minute for dematting - that would be about 6o bucks for an hour!

Well I missed my calling then. I could have made $405.00 last weekend dematting Annie after she rolled in something dead during the week & her owners didn't realize it wasn't a good idea to bathe her without brushing her out! 8O 8O 8O
