The groomer said that they wanted sheepie with curly fur. I should tell you that I am in St. Louis until my parents are as I said to them. In a car, plane or train heading north. When I was here in April they promised to be on their way by August. My father rolled out of bed a few weeks ago. When they were treating him for that they found that he had a major blood clot in his leg. Now that there has been surgery to remove it he will have to be here for a while. Therefore so will I. As I tell my mother, they are not in their 60 anymore. If they keep it up they are not going to make it to their 80s. |

This Liz I have not been around for a very long time. The previous was my post I DO NOT WANT TO EVEN TRY TO KNOW WHY i DID NOT KNOW i WAS NOT LOGGED IN UNTIL i WAS READY TO POST. Or why I keep locking the cap button. I do have another question. My dog hate the weather here. I had them shaved. They have plenty of water and a fan for themselves. What else should I do for them to make the heat easier for them? |
I have a good friend who owns a sheepiedoodle. They decided to buy one because their daughter is allergic to dogs and the sheepiedoodles are supposed to be hypoallergenic. |

Ron may be able to add to this, but I think there is a button when you log in that you can check that says something like 'Log me in every time I visit' or something like that. Look for it. Vance |
Hi Liz I bet you are in weather-shock in St Louis!!! It's extreme for us from MN too - although I must say, this weather this summer has leveled the playing field - nearly every state is getting a dose of brutal humidity and heat. I hope your parents get their health straightened out so they can get moved. |
Jack is curly coated if I don't brush him out often........which I don't. As a result, with his frequent short coat, he's all curly. MO, in the same length hair is straight, straight, straight. Depends on the dog. So may not be a sheepiedoodle. As for surviving the heat, shade and chance to dig into cool earth ( ) , house with AC, fans blowing on the dog, plenty of water and if they like, a little water spray. Mine like the tile floors.....or find the shaded concrete in the garage. Hot humid weather is tough on all. Remember, plenty of water to drink, they cool themselves through their mouth and paws. All that huffy puffy dries them out quickly. |
Pardon my ignorance but isn't a sheepiedoodle just a mutt crossing between an old english sheepdog and a poodle? Like a "designer" dog. Aren't they usually just bred because of the fad and making money? As for the heat, I live in the only place in the USA right now that isn't getting a heat wave and I still had to shave down my sheepie. Maybe give them ice cubes as treats? I hope everything goes well with your fathers surgery. |
Yes; Sheepiedoodles- all doodles-are fad designer dogs. Glorified Mutts, if you like. And breeding anything that way is NO guarantee of getting a dog that is hypoallergenic as a result. When you mix dogs randomly, you get random results. A sheepdog + a poodle could be anything. You could get a sheepdog build with a curly poodle styled coat with a poodle temperment and a sheepdog's hair. You don't automatically get the qualities of each dog that you want, so why would you think that you'd get a hypoallergenic dog? And there are new studies out now saying that your "hypoallergenic" breeds aren't even that! That there are no truly hypoallergenic dogs: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hypoal ... ds/AN01953 I think some people think some pets are pretty cute, and sometimes those cute pets are mutts. So they slap a fancy name onto them, like Doodles, so they can charge pure breed prices for those mutts. But since Doodles aren't acknowledged breeds by the AKC standards, they cannot be shown and judged. If they cannot be judged, then there's no way to control the breed's quality. And if there's no quality control going on, then you are getting a pretty random result with your mixed pooch. A lady on my block got a doodle right about when I got Tonks and Luna. She told me it was a Teacup Labradoodle, and she was going to have a tiny dog she could carry in her purse. How the breeder mixed a Toy Poodle and a Labrador Retriever is beyond me. And of course, when it arrived, it was already Tonks and Luna's size. Today that Teacup Labradoodle is 80 pounds. So no, you cannot guarantee ANY results when you get Doodle mixes. If you could, they'd be an ACK certified breed, and not an overpriced Mutt. |
Thank you all for your good wishes. I think my father is going to be ok. As I told my siblings, he is irritating, annoying and asking me to shop for things. In other words back to himself. The reason I asked about the sheepiepoo is I thought that sheepies were generally thought of as hypoallergnic. I would have had my dogs shaved back home, but because in late summer the foxtail grass goes to seed. It has horrible barbs and when the dog trys to get it out it can get stuck in their mouths. That and don't they feel wonderful down to the skin? Almost as good as the puppy length. |
Understand foxtail reason and yes, shorter coat would help spot those things! Grrrrrr. Glad father is back or demanding self, a good sign, I guess. As for their living to 80, it may not be their desire. My mother wasn't too keen about anything past 80-85. She died a month short of 94 and was not pleased about having to stick around so long. Hard for us to imagine, but someday we may be thinking the same thing. Love 'em while you've got them but respect their lives as well. As for sheepiedoodles.........a fool and his money is soon parted....I especially like the TeaCup Labradoodle as a pocket dog!! Need I also ask how the mating process Anyone who has had a mixed breed litter knows how the dogs can vary within the litter. I don't know how many generations it takes to develop a stabilized breed where characteristics are well planted.......but no designer breed is there yet. As mutts, these fad-mixes are just mutts with fancy names. |
