He loves to play fetch with them but also loves to pull at that fuzzy cover until he gets the cover ripped off now! He's not to pleased when I take away his "project", but I don't want to take the chance that he might swallow the cover or the rubber parts when he totally rips it apart. Silly puppy! I had to work 12 hours today and again tomorrow. I sure miss his cute little face and silly antics while I'm away. Cindy |

It sounds like he is taking his frustrations out on the tennis balls. One of my sheepies use to take all the stuffing out of a toy,but never play with it,as he aged he stopped doing it. Others may have more experience with the tennis ball destroyers. Teddieriffic is still a cutie pie! Robin |
Brick does the same thing with tennis balls. He'll fetch for awile but is more interested in pulling them apart or ripping them open. |
If Teddy and Brick are ripping them apart - I would stop using them. Not just because they could choke or obstruct from eating them either. The covering is very abrasive! It will cause dental damage if they chew on them long term. I've read stuff about this and also seen an example 1st hand..... I worked as a school nurse for several years, and my usual job was monitoring little elementary age diabetic kids over the noon hour - glucose checks, administering insulin, and also making sure they eat a proper lunch to cover the insulin given. I spent a lot of time in lunch rooms! In one school. the janitor assisted as lunch room attendant, and he used the time to clean black scuff marks off the floor. He used a broom handle with a tennis ball on the end of it! He walked around and rubbed the scuffs out, and did this every single day!! Out of curiosity, I asked him how often he had to change the balls - and he said 1 ball lasted the entire year!! And he did the whole school with this ball!! If 1 ball can do an entire school for a whole year, I hate to think of the damage this would be doing to your dog's teeth if they are a tennis ball chewer. |
Thanks Dawn! I didn't know that and that's good to know. The tennis balls he ripped up were the ones made for dogs. Last night was the first real tennis ball he pulled the cover off and it was very old and pretty smooth. He chews on his bones usually but this week he decided to change it up a bit. I think it's because he's in a big chewing phase right now. I'll make sure we only use them for fetch right now and not let him chew on them. Thanks for the info! Cindy |
My sis had a black wire haired Terrier named Asphalt that did that. Funny story about him... Many years ago I dated a girl who worked at a local racquet club that hosted an annual tourney. One year she offered me ALL the extra tennis balls from the tourney for the dog. I said sure. She gave me a HUGE box with over 200 tennis balls. I brought them to my sis's house an when Asphalt came in the room, we dumped the box and thought he was gonna have a heart attack! He didn't know which one to grab first or where to go next! Vance |
We learned when Brick was young that as long as he wasn't using the tennis ball as a chew toy, that he could have it. The minute he started trying to pull it apart, we would take it away. |
We don't give the dogs tennis balls. We lost our first basset with not a tennis ball but one that was for dogs that couldn't be destroyed. It couldn't, lodged in his intestines and by the time the vet (who did have xray machine back then) decided it was a tumor, he was too sick to survive the anesthesia. Never gave them a ball again that they could destroy. Butchy pulls all the stuffing and squeakers out of his stuffed animals so those get thrown out and he plays with the ratty looking mess that's left. |
Asphalt?? Close to naming a dog Aflac. Wow, 200 balls! Like being locked in a Baskin Robbins over light with a spoon!! Tennis balls may be coarse, but they aren't tough. DH would go through a set a week on his walker. No, he wasn't chewing on them...I don't think...it was he was exercising by walking up and down the driveway and then out into the garden Limited play with tennis balls and you collect them afterwards would be fine. (think how excited he'll be seeing his friends, the balls, when they appear!!) I would not let the ball and dog alone for unlimited chewing. Yes, pups do go thru chewing phases, just think about all those new teeth coming in...... |
Yes, pups go thru many chewing phases. Teddy is always supervised with chewing and toys. He's usually in the same room with me so I always can see what he's doing. If he does leave the room, I give him a few minutes and then check on him to see what he's doing. He's a momma's boy so he's always in the same room as me. If I leave the room, he's right behind me! He will go look out the window or patio door to check on the backyard occasionally, mostly he sits on the couch and looks out the front window to see what's going on in the neighborhood if he's not playing with his toys or chewing on his big knuckle bones.
