I think Brick's feeling a little off today

He was a little loose last night.

He woke me up at 3:30 AM, so I took him outside. Nothing.
He woke me up at 5:45 AM, so I took him outside. Nothing.
He woke me up at 6:45 AM, so I took him outside. He pooped and it was loose.
As soon as he was done pooping, he tried to throw up. Nothing came out except a little liquid and some grass that he must've eaten.
I did not feed him this morning.

The he pooped again at 1:45 PM this afternoon and it was the loosest yet. He stayed squatted for a while and I could see liquid dripping out occasionally.

I brought him back into the house and he tried throwing up again but nothing came out.

But otherwise, you'd never know he wasn't feeling well. He's been bouncing around the house, tail up & wagging, head up.
To look at him, he seems fine.

I already went around the house to see if anything was missing and couldn't find anything. I did a sock check in the laundry basket and all socks are matched and accounted for. We don't leave anything on the floor except his toys and they don't look any different than they usually do.

He ate just fine last night.
This isn't like him. He has an iron gut.

Any thoughts?

Heat. He did find something extra to eat.
Butchy has been having looser stools too and he managed to get ahold of a small piece of corn cob so he threw that up. He seems to be fine but I think a lot is the heat, it is getting old. Will be keeping an eye on him tho just to make sure everything is ok.

No one feels great in this including me.
It hasn't been too terribly hot here the past week.
I think the warmest it got was about 84 or 88 degrees F.
But he's in an air conditioned part of the house all day and the only times he's been outside is for his walks. One before work (~6:15 AM) and one before bed (~9:30 PM).
We aren't just having the heat which I do hate but the dew pts and humidity are what we have problems with. Butchy only goes out when he has to and we don't have central air but we do have air and that does help.

I guess the only thing you can do is watch him and you have made sure he hasn't eaten anything unless it was outside. Hope he feels better.
He just had another BM and not much came out (just a few small soft bits, one small turd, and a few drops of liquid).
He squats for awhile.

He's running around in the house however and seems happy.

I just went thru the garbage to make sure I could account for all the corn-on-the-cob we had this week. All the cobs were accounted for.

I can't think what he could have eaten. I've been keeping the floors clean ever since the flea scare. The only times he's been outside is with me, on a leash. The only non-food things I've seen him eat in the past few days has been grass. Could grass mess up their systems this much?

I was thinking of feeding him some rice and hamburg. Should I do that or not?
I know when our dogs get upset stomachs I give them rice and hamburger so don't think that would hurt him. I'm no expert so someone else may have better suggestions. I've given mine kaopectate also mixed in the food and that seems to help. Vet suggested that so shouldn't hurt.

I know our dogs have had the same symptoms and never did figure out what the cause may be, don't think grass would cause diarrhea but could be wrong.

I know Butchy had problems with diarrhea at one time but I was feeding him too much. Learned that on here.
Personally, I would feed a bit of rice and plain chopped meat as well. Just a small amount. No kibble or anything else.

I know sometimes this would happen and we never could account for what it was that would bother our Lucy's stomach. It would just come out of the blue (so it seemed) And, usually, it would just fix itself after a day or so.

You mention grass....Is your grass treated? Any recent changes to your grass?
Any other outside flowers or plants that he could have eaten?
Any strange water sources?
He hasn't been in the back yard in about 3 weeks.
He has been in the front and has eaten some grass there. But the front yard is not treated or anything.

I've been walking him in the middle of the road for the last 3 weeks to a public patch of land so he could do his business. It was there where he ate grass. The village doesn't treat it's property.

I keep him away from puddles on our walks.
I made him some boiled chicken & rice for breakfast this morning (about 1.75 cups total).
He scarfed it right down and was looking at me when I was putting his dinner together for later.

So that's a good sign. Now to monitor for vomiting and then for stool consistency. (Where else could we possibly talk about topics like this? )
So far, no signs of vomiting or wanting to vomit.

I suspect I won't see anything from the other end till maybe tonight or tomorrow as he hasn't eaten since Friday evening.
It does sound to me a visit to the Vet may be in order. My dog had that same type of "urgency" to go and it was that liquid like you speak of. And the prolonged squating, etc. He ended up having giardi and was actually dehydrated in a matter of a few hours from all the pooping and vomitting...

The attempting to vomit bothers me a bit too...Although you seem very deligent in watching him, one never knows how our sheepies can get into the things they get into  But seriously, a visit this week to the Vet might be needed.

We use boiled chicken and rice. And I overcook the rice. For excess gas I give a gas x, human kind.

Hope Brick feels better soon!
Dinner, consisting of boiled chicken & rice, is on-board. :)

He woofed it right down. No signs of gagging or hurling or anything.

I'll take him out for his nightly constitutional around 9 PM and see what happens.
No news on the poop front tonight.
Will see what tomorrow morning brings after breakfast.

No, but he didn't eat anything between 6PM on Friday and 9:30 AM on Sunday.
So I figure it will take 24 to 36 hours for the food I gave him for breakfast yesterday, "to rear it's ugly head". (Is that a Ron worthy pun? :) )
Hope Brick is feeling better today! :hearts:
He scarfed up his chicken & rice again this morning. No signs that he wanted to vomit or even gag.

We went for a walk but still no "news" on that front. :)

We even jogged from the halfway point back to the house.

He seems fine in every way.

Just waiting for the "exit".

Maybe tonight.
It usually takes 24-48 hours for Rudie to poop again after a diarrhea episode. I think the fasting and the rice works very well!

That's what I'm figuring and why I'm not sweating anything yet.

Like I said, he seems and acts nornal.

I'll start thinking about the vet if it gets beyond 48 hours or so from his first feeding (Sunday at 9:30 AM).
I keep checking this post. I don't have any experience to contribute but I am hoping for good news. :crossed:
So how is Brick? I just read his saga, and hope he is feeling better
I remember your recent post about the rescued Airedale, are any of those dogs having similar issues?
Sounds reasonalbe you want to wait 24 hours before thinking of a vist to the Vet.. But, you must be on alert, if there is a blockage, time is of the essence...Watch Brick carefully....The fact that he now vomitted his food makes me a bit alarmed.... SOmetimes it takes a while for the blockage to truly blocked and the fact that his is now vomitting his food, well, it makes me a bit nervous....Has he pooped? Is his stomach tight? Are his gums pink? It can all happen so fast...keep us posted....
Diane,
He never vomited any food. Just a little bit of liquid & some grass early on Saturday morning and then just one or two mild pre-vomit muscular contractions (that did not produce anything) mid-day on Saturday. That's it.
He gets more enthusiastic about his meals with each meal. He barked at me at dinner time tonight (apparently I was a little late  :) ).

He has not pooped yet, but remember that I withheld food for 36 hours. So I figure it will take at least that long before I see something. Especially if he emptied his system on Saturday.

His stomach is not tight at all nor is it distended. In fact, quite the opposite. He actually looks a little thin where his stomach is and it's soft.
Also, I can hear digestion noises when I put my ear to his gut.

His gums are pink. They turn white when I push on them and immediately go back to pink when I release.

His demeanor has been great. He certainly hasn't acted like a sick dog.

If he doesn't go by tomorrow afternoon, I'll call the vet.
Brenda,
Brick was a little off before meeting the other dogs.
Hope Brick is feeling better!!!
We have poop!

The first piece was very normal in size & consistency. The second piece was much smaller and a bit softer.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring more good "news".

God, the things we celebrate on this forum

I had the same result when Belle was off last month I think it was (in her case she had eaten a scrunchy and then barfed it up, but she also had runny stools) I do hamburger and rice and I'd forgotten how effective that tends to be. It took a while for her to have a bowel movement as well.

Kristine
Yay, Brick pooped.
My congrats as well!!

Without going too much into TMI- land......as a human IBS sufferer, I can personally vouch that it's quite normal for no poops for days after a bowel evacuation episode.....  8)
Yippe for poop  One time when my dog had tummy troubles, we were waiting for poop and waiting for poop, just like you Mark. Finally we got poop and my husband left a message on my office phone yelling, "We got poop!", very happily and obviously excited...My whole office heard it before me
See, this is why I love this forum. No one else seems to understand the joy and relief that dog poop can bring! Glad to hear that Brick pooped!
The weird thing about this forum is that I now even get excited when someone ELSE'S dog poops! Of course, Brick is kind of like a cousin to us now, so not a stranger, but still...

Haha - that was my thoughts exactly too!!

Brick is family :hearts:
:yay: Yay for Brick! Glad he's doing better!

Cindy
You guys are the best.

Speaking of poop, it hasn't quite returned to it's "normal state".
There isn't much when he goes, and it's softer than normal (but formed).

I may take a sample to the vet tomorrow to have it checked.

Still feeding him rice & chicken. I'm sure he likes that.
I brought a sample to the vet today.
He's negative on worms & coxsidia. They didn't check for giardia.

The tech said that the bland diet could be the reason why there isn't much volume.

I'm bringing him in tomorrow. I'll have them check for giardia tomorrow.
Just noticed Brick must've thrown up a little bit earlier in the day.
There was some liquid & grass in the corner of the dining room. Most of it was dried up but not all of it, which leads me to believe it happened when I was at work.

He scarfed down his food this evening and acts completely normal.

Good thing we're going to the vet tomorrow.
Any chance it's him reacting to chemicals from your flea war? :lmt:
Glad you are going to the Vet. Its very difficult to get a positve for Giardi. But be sure to mention he's been eating but still vomitted a bit....

Yes, the boiled chicken and rice will cause less stool...hope he is okay. These dogs will be the death of us for sure! Good luck at Vet.

I hadn't used any chemicals in the house (other than putting part of a cut up flea collar in the vacuum bag).
I sprayed the back yard 4 weeks ago but I haven't let him back there since I sprayed. And we've had several good rainfalls since then anyways.

I've been walking him (in the road) to a public grassy area twice a day for his BMs. I can't believe the village would have sprayed any of their properties. I've never seen them do that in the past.

Oh, and no poops tonight.
It seems like he's urinating more in relation to the water he is taking in, which doesn't seem like much, unless the rice & chicken I give him holds a lot of liquid.

I wish this issue would just resolve already.
Poor Brick! Sounds like he is still dealing with something. Is his gut rumbling and/or gurgling? Is he passing gas? Is he running a temp? I bought one of those digital doggie ear thermometers a few years back, and it was a great investment. I measured it against the vet's "special" thermometer, and it was not exact, but pretty accurate, so I use it when Oscar isn't feeling well.

At this point, your vet might want to do abdominal x-rays, as well as run pancreatic enzymes (amylase, lipase), electrolytes, and a CBC. (Can you tell we've been through this a few hundred times?)

We know how difficult the tummy issues can be. Hopefully, you will get some answers at the vet's office.

Laurie and Oscar
It took Belle about a week to be totally back to her normal self on both ends  Just FYI.

Glad you have a vet appointment just in case, but he does seem to be on the right track.
