EMOTIONAL: 3 moves and now in a very small place without a fenced yard. Exercise is way decreased because I am working full time after having been home for several years. CONDITIONS: Eating the same diet, same routine except he is alone all day, but we moved to SC from VA and it is much hotter. (3 yrs ago) This summer the heat index is as high as 110. He is inside in AC @ 75 all day. Hot, occasional, evening walks if it isn't to hot because he just can't do it. HEALTH: Overall it has been good. No major conditions most of his life, now he gets the skin yeast and has to have meds once it flares up. He also has a very sensitive stomach but always has. DRINKING: It has doubled, and sometimes he gets me up at night for more. Does anyone have any experience with this? |

When we adopted Mattie back in November, she couldn't get enought water ever. Day or Night. We took her too the vet and they checked her urine and it didn't concetrate. She has whats called Diabetes Incipidus. It's not what you think of when you see the word Diabetes. She's on eyes drops 2x a day that help tell her brain what her kidneys are supposed to do. They have made a world of difference. She drinks very little now, and doesn't have accidents anymore or have to go outside every half an hour. www.petdiabetes.com/pdorg/diabetes_insipidus.htm Ask your vet to do an urinalysis. If you find out this is the problem. Pm me and I can give you the name of a mail order pharmacy to get the drops. They are very pricey. But this place is very reasonable, and our vet just told us about an even better pharmacy. Welcome from Michigan. Hope things get better. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
This sounds medical in nature, as opposed to behavioral/stress induced, with the accidents in the house having a direct link to the increased water consumption. With increased thirst, my first thought is diabetes, but there are a few different medical conditions that can cause this. I think a visit to the vet is in order. Laurie and Oscar |
Absolutely. You need to check with your vet. There can be many causes for this, and there may be an easily medicated fix. I wouldn't wait. |
Thanks to each of you for information on my thirsty boy. We will be seeing the vet on Monday and I certainly appreciate the advise on getting the drops at a better price. I will let you all know how it turns out. |
Rosie has Cushings and one of her first symptoms was drinking a lot more..panting a lot and she has adip in her back caused by fat redepositing. Her liver enzymes were high and still are even with medicine. She acts fine most of the time and if it wasn't for the dip and her hair not growing back I really wouldn't have noticed much..just thought she was drinking more because of the heat. |
Don't forget kidney failure. Early signs are increased dinking, more frequent urination...and a few others. It is a routine questions vets ask at annual well-doggie exams. It may be the heat, but at 8, the time has come to pay more attention to their changes. Glad you will be seeing vet Monday. Now watch carefully so you can be more specific in info to vet. |
