I'm using duck and sweet potato for my tender tummy girl. Don't remember the brand. |
We use Purina Pro Plan Turkey and Barley. We always seem to have one with some sort of allergy, and all our dogs have ended up on it. It's not crazy expensive, but it's not a cheap food either. They've done really well on it. At one point we tried the twenty thousand dollar a bag special salmon stuff (okay, a slight exaggeration, but not by much), and it wasn't any better than the turkey and barley, AND the dogs smelled fishy. If your guy is itchy food could very well be the culprit. We were told to take our Hudson off basically everything but the kibble and then gently ease him back. We were told to avoid beef, chicken, and wheat as they are the big three. If you are feeding special food also remember that all dog treats must also be allergy free. A strict diet of the best food in the world is completely ruined if someone throws your boy a Milk Bone. Our vet told us that he often thinks of sending the folks who make them a thank you card. Between allergies, stomach upsets, and chunks getting lodged in dogs who don't chew well, Milk Bones account for a significant chunk of his practice. Hudson grabbed a chicken breast off the counter a few years ago and swallowed it whole. It passed, and he had no allergy effects. A year ago he snagged a strip loin off the counter that we were going to BBQ. (Yes, he's a jerk.) He swalled it whole, and within a few days he was itchy. His pads bugged him for months, and he licked them raw, staining all the fur a browny red colour. Within a week the insides of his ears were hot, filling with goo, and we had to put him on antibiotics and anti fungals for an infection. He was miserable, and scratched at his ears until they bled. It took several months for him to stop scratching and licking and shaking his head. He's his own worst enemy. I opted against steroids, which would have shortened it I imagine, but we've had two bad experiences with them and I avoid them now like the plague. So if you can identify the problem food and avoid it it can make a world of difference. Now we make sure that there are no treats with wheat or beef in the house, and he eats his food, lots of raw veggies and ice cubes, and any table scraps (small ones, as treats) are very carefully assessed. Sorry, that was long winded. I guess what I meant to say was: -Purina Pro Plan Turkey and Barley -And I think you're wise to think food is the culprit. |
Frankies on the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Salmon flavor for his sensitive tummy. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
California Natural Herring & Sweet Pot.,limited ingredients seems to work best for sensitive tummies and allergies. K9 Cuisine is where I have bought this and the beauty of it is it is delivered at no charge within 24 hours. Most feed stores carry it along with specialty stores, sometimes grooming shops too. Let us know how your pup makes out, Robin |
Have you pried Pro Plan Sensative Skin & Stomach? I've had good luck with that. |
Thank you all for the great advice! I'm feeling much more informed We are currently fostering a sheepdog for a rescue, and when we took her to the vet today, he recommended the Purina Pro Plan as well. That brand seems to keep coming up when discussing food allergies. We bought a bag of the Salmon kind, but I can see how it can give a fishy smell. However I liked how it said it was for allergies AND sensitive stomachs. I may look into the other flavors as well, if that seems to be a good choice... |
We use Orijen six fresh fish formula and have been doing very well with former tummy issues. We also added a probiotic, Herbal Defense, and we use yogurt as well. We use treats with no wheat or soy or corn...Mother Hubbard cooies we use plus pumpkin dream cookies from Pet Exteas ( only22 calories for a substantial cookie!)...If you change any food, just do so very very slowly... |

The other flavors of the ProPlan are good foods too but they aren't targeted for sensitive skins & stomachs. I use ProPlan Lamb & Rice for 2 of mine & the Sensitive Skin & Stomach for my oldest one who always had the sensitive stomach. Since he's been on this formula (about 4 years now) stools are firmer & he seems to have more defense against getting diarrhea. |
I have been meaning to mention the great reward program attached to Purina. Save the weight circles and then turn them into wonderful offers. I saved them for a year once and opted for a 200.00 gift card to Cherrybrook. Lots of OES owners do feed Purina Pro Plan and I do too, along with Fromm's, California Natural and Chicken Soup. Hope a new food helps your pup. Robin |
ChSheepdogs wrote: Have you pried Pro Plan Sensative Skin & Stomach? I've had good luck with that. ^^ This particular one does well with many oes' on here that have sensitive stomachs! This may be different than the one your vet recommends. The kind they recommend typically is the kind they carry at their clinic that is made for sensitive stomachs/alleriges [this one breaks down the protein differently i think]. Well the one above is found at any store. My furkid has bad allergies, and we are currently on blue buffalo and every combination so far has sucked. She did real good on science diet z/d ultra (for allergies). Did well on the salmon pro plan sensitive stomach and skin too. ...and the one she did the best on was Wellness (the kind that only has 2-3 ingred) for allergies. Just after a certain amount of years... each have eventually went downhill but I mention them because they often do well. I have a soft cone/e-collar currently on our dog she can't scratch, and so we can once again today try a different food. We've tried everything. She probably has other allergies (grass), but we know her current one is being affected by what she is eating by how worse or better it gets on each kind of food. |
