Our CSA includes fresh meat, and when they butcher the chickens, they leave the necks on the carcass. There are a lot of postings about the merits of giving chicken necks to our sheepies, but I was wondering just how old she should be before I introduce this delicacy to her. Barring any digestive issues, we will be slowly switching her over to Innova once she gets home, so raw chicken necks will be a treat, not part of a raw food diet. But I'm curious - how young do you think is "too young" for chicken necks? |

Chicken necks are a funny thing -- they are very bony for a puppy -- you'd want to give it with meat to cushion it. But then they are too small for a full grown dog -- they tend to swallow them instead of chewing and grinding the bones. When your dog is full-size, you will want to try turkey necks or chicken backs instead of chicken necks. So maybe you could give the necks between 4-8 months? But make sure you give it with other food because all the bones will make a very dry, chalky, uncomfortable-looking stool. Watch to make sure your dog chews them. If they swallow it whole, it might just come right back up. |
