London smells

Hi- lately London's coat has been smelling bad- a musky skunk like smell. Last week I gave him a bath and the smell came back. We live in an apartment so there's no way of him being sprayed by a skunk or other animals. His coat is short (less than an inch in length) and he's eating and drinking ok. We did change his food (to Taste of the Wild - bison flavored). Could the food be the reason? or is he sick? Has anyone experienced this before? We probably will take him to the vet this week. Tony's coat smells fine.

I forget how old he is.... is he neutered?
My guess is he needs to drink more, his urine might be too concentrated, or he could have a uti. Intact males sometimes get this odor if girls are in season.
I have no helpful information for you but if you find something, please let me know

Fozzie smells bad too. He doesn't smell like skunk and I can't pinpoint what his body smells like. I can say that his snout smells like moth balls.

The body odor is stronger after he's gone for a walk so it has something to do with being sweaty. Foz's coat is also kept short but he's super think anyway. The smell tinges our noses and makes us all sneeze including Evan.

Let me know if you find something that works! I've even been thinking about a body spray but those make my nose tickle too :?
Hmm... London's 6 and neutered. Hmm he has been smelling like this a month now.. Not skunk like but know that smell when it's wearing down? That musky smell. He does have few small scabs on his back (skin allergy- we knew this when we first moved here). Im pretty sure it's the new food. Im going to give him another bath today and see if thatll help.

Stacy- ill let you know if I find anything helpful.
What helped one of my sheepies that would get scabs, she was highly allergic to fleas, along with a smell is Malaseb shampoo.
The Malaseb helps treat bacterial, fungal and yeast. You can buy this online and most vet's have it on hand also.
It did work for my sheepie and we tried everything without any luck.
Good luck.

My first thought was seborrhea.......a general term describing symptoms, not a condition. Seborrhea oleosa hs an oil haircoat, yellow flakes and rancid, unpleasant odor. Another type, soborrhea sicca is dry, dull hair with lots of dandruff.

Oleosa might be traced to skin producing too many new skin cells before old ones are lost. The suplus accumulates forming a greasy foul smelling mass with bacteria add on.

It can be hormnal upsets such as low thyroid; or in bitches in heat.....or males that are producing too much female hormone, also dogs on corticosteroids. Also auto immune problems.

Low fat diets, pancreatitis, vitamin A deficiency, zinc deficiency, too much calcium in puppies.

Then the parasites: fleas as mentioned before. Scabies, manage, certain mite infestations, lice.

It may not be seborrhea, but rather rear end problems, anal glads, a tooth or gum problelm, infected ear.

Maybe the buffalo is the cause.......

You'll have to start working your way over and around the problem. Try a new shampoo, check the rear end, ears and teeth. Some breeds are naturally stinky, OES usually isn't one of them.
Robin- thanks for the tips.
Sheepieboss- i think you're right. London's haircoat is oily. He seems lazier than usual. Ill give him a bath and then take him to the vet. Thanks so much!
If it's a skunky/musky smell make sure the vet checks his anal glands. I found out our Rudy's needed attention from his breath alone. And that was a hard one to explain to the tech who answered the phone when I tried to book an appointment.

Me: Hi, I'd like to book an appointment to have Rudy's anal glands checked. I think they need attention.

Her: Oh, is he doing the scooting on the carpet thing?

Me: No, I've never actually seen him scoot or fuss at all, but his breath is horrible.

Her: Um, Tracie, do you know what anal glands are? Because you seem to be talking about the wrong end.

(Then I had to explain that, when he's not around me, he must be licking back there as I could smell a very musky odor on his breath and around his mouth.)
   You are so right, too.

I'm not sure I'd bathe the dog before going to the vet...might wash away the evidence...not you Tracie....I'm referring to London's condition. I'd swab the heck out of anal breath before I took him in!!
I picked my girls up from the kennel on Tuesday of last week after 9 days of swimming two to three times a day. Luna loves to roll on, well, anything, and this is a working farm as well as a dog kennel. So I always expect her to be filthy (Tonks is better about not rolling), what with swimming and then rolling in who-knows-what. But she came home this time with an Odor (that's Odor with a captial O) that I just couldn't tolerate. It smelled like really bad, waxy yeasty ears, only it was coming from the very top of her head! She'd walk by me, and leave a cloud of stink in her wake. It was horrifying. All kissing and cuddles stopped- I couldn't get near her.

Yesterday she got her bath. First a clarifying shampoo, then rinse, then whitening, rinse, RE-DID the whitening, rinse, and then a conditioner and finally a shampoo neutralizer. Poor girl as in the tub for a hour with all those lather-rinse-repeats. She fell asleep on the grooming table after. Today she smells AWESOME.

I simply CANNOT STAND a stinky dog.
Aw poor Luna, it took her nine days of hard work to get herself smelling just the way she wanted and in one bath, all that hard work is completely undone.

Glad no ear infection......can happen with such water babies. Love the smell of clean dogs.....been a long time here. Mine too will immediately find stinky places to roll after baths.

We're really careful about ear infections- Tonks and Luna get them more often than I like. The kennel ladies are on notice- I send their ear cleaner and meds with them, and they get their ears thoroughly dried after each swim. At the first sign of infection they call my vet and they have the meds on hand to give them if it looks like its necessary.
just want to update everyone -- Vet DXed London with severe skin allergies -- he's allergic to California :):) He's on antibotics and special shampoo. His allergies started when we moved here last summer and I guess he's very sensitive to the pollen - or could be the bad air here. No idea ... whatever it is we'll be out of here soon enough:)
I don't blame you, London! We have to do an event every year in San Diego, and every year I spend the week sneezing and coughing. The climate is so nice, but there's something on the West Coast that I'm allergic to as well!
