I do have three tomatoes getting red on our plants and have had five cukes so far. Much better garden than last year. |

Suppose it's too hot down there, I would be miserable if we couldn't get any up here but with our climate you never know. Too much or too little of everything can be a problem. Just had to share with someone. |
Our tomatoes are sad. Plants look great, not too leggy, but they are still blooming and not really putting fruit on yet. Very odd. Todd ate the 1st cherry tomato yesterday. Those plants at least have a bit of fruit, the rest look pretty empty. Sounds yummy at your house!! |
That's the way it was last year, think we got 1 tomato and it wasn't good. Everyone said it was because we got too much rain but I personally think this year the composted horse and chicken manure made a big difference. We really only have sand here so any good dirt is a plus. We also compost everything and add that when we plant too so maybe we've hit on the best solution. I don't have that many more years to perfect this. |
Yay.. I love this time of year because of the fresh produce. Our farm share has been doing pretty well. Got green beans yesterday. Yay. Tonights dinner Green beans, new potatoes, onions and ham hocks cooked in the crock pot. all the veggies are from our farm share. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
We had new potatoes too, and corn on the cob. I love this time of year and I love living a block away from a farmer's market. I might complain about my 90 year old tiny shack of a house, but at least it is well located. |
Tomatoes are not ready around here, don't know about corn. But the best meal in the entire world is a BLT with fresh t, and corn on the cob. |
I've been getting about 2 dozen cherry tomatoes a day for the last 2 weeks! I got my first full sized tomatoe this week, with three more that will be ready by Friday, I suspect. I've been pulling string beans for about 2 weeks, and I got a zucchini 3 weeks ago that was enormous, but nothing since then. My radishes really didn't work out well, and my carrots are still so tiny- smaller than the "baby" ones you see in the store. And I'm getting a cantaloupe every few days. this was my haul on Thursday: Not too shabby for my first garden, I think!!!!!! |

So cool.... I used to love gardening... I just haven't had time in forever but I think I'm going to give it a try next year... Re tomatoes, mozzarella and basil.... YUM! My fave A good snack is an english muffin buttered, put on a slice of tomato, mozzarella, basil, salt and pepper and a bit of parmesan and throw it in the oven under broil for about 2 mins |
Haven't had a garden for a couple of years. Really miss the corn and tomatoes. My mouth doesn't miss the corn, I can't wait for it to cool after cooking and burn the heck out of the area behind the front teeth (piggy). Tomatoes......oh the many ways to eat them. With the cherry tomatoes, straight off the vine is the best. Yum! Mrs. J, would tomatoes do better for you as a fall crop? I'm thinking your heat wouldn't be good for pollination......but then this year, Texas, Okla, NM, etc are just struggling with the drought............. If the plants stay alive and healthy, you'd probably get more produce in October/Nov. |
So far I have a grand total of...1 cuke. My cuke's usually go crazy and I'm begging people to take some off my hands. I have two tomato plants, one large and one cherry. Lots of green tomato's on there. The rabbits ate almost all of my greenbean plants and my cantaloupe plants . There are still bits and pieces left but they will not amount to anything My green pepper plants have, I think one pepper each. I hope to have enough summer left to move things along here. |
My peppers are loaded - I really need to do something w/ them. I have 3-4 varieties - from bells to hot ones. We are OD-ing on green beans here. They are delicious, but way too abundant. My onions are about done. Our early potatoes are done. Corn - Only grew ornamental indian corn, as we have a corn pack right near us and we can buy all we want from the lot once they hit major production. Corn is not ready yet by us, bringing it in from states to the south. Vines are growing, flowering and just setting fruit - melons, pumpkins, squash. Leaf lettuce - half bolted, the rest still OK. Cabbage - heads over half size. Kohlrabi are simply huge! Our strawberries are done - June bearing, but they were fabulous What else?? hmm, it will likely come to me later! |
My lettuce was not nice- it was really bitter and had a milky colored liquid that ran out of it when I picked the leaves. Can anyone recommend a better variety? I'm thinking of trying a fall garden here- the temps stay nice pretty late. Also, my strawberries are tiny, and often critter eaten. Any suggestions? |

It is best as a cool season crop - so definitely give it a second planting a bit later this season. The milkiness happens here too sometimes. I usually notice it with the heat and over-mature lettuce. I like the packs that are mixes, as they make a pretty salad and also give more options. Also if one duds out, the others carry on! . I always include mesclun - we like that! Also, my strawberries are tiny, and often critter eaten. Any suggestions? Little fruit is usually not enough water, but also can be poor soil. Critters - well, EVERYONE loves the berries. You can uses netting or be super vigilant and pick right away. Our outdoor chickens wanted ours..... They were being naughty with all sorts of stuff as well, so they did end up getting penned for the growing season. Then we just had to deal w/ wild birds! |
I planted carrot, radish and beet seed strips because I never seem to have luck when I just plant the seeds myself. They were doing quite well until Mr. Rabbit showed up. Have sprayed with liquid fence but that doesn't seem to stop them. Our peppers are doing very well also and one pumpkin vine wound it's way thru the cherry bush, of course that's the vine that has the pumpkin so will be propping that up. Melons are starting but we don't have much luck with those, think our season is too short. Those of you further south probably do have the option of growing things later in the season which would be nice. Our raspberries are doing well this year. We wait so long to get anything out of the garden and then it's fall and all over. Do need to get a couple bushels of tomatoes to can again this year, the garden isn't big enough to provide all that because I'll eat tomatoes until they're coming out of my ears. You can freeze them just as they come off the vine and when you take them out I guess the skin peels right off and you can use them for cooking. Never did it but had friends that did and they loved them. |
