The joy of learning

After weeks of trying to get Barney to freely give me the ball after he fetches it, finally success. Day after day I would sit down with a breatpocket full of his favorite treats, throw the ball, watch him bound after it and faithfully bring it back, then refuse to let me have it. Each time I would practically shove the treat into his mouth before he released the ball. Then he would bound away with the treat still in his mouth, waiting for me to throw the ball again, so he could challenge me to get him to give it back to me.

This evening I'm sitting at my desk browsing the posts in the forum. In comes Barney with his tennis ball. Sets the ball in my lap. Sits and looks at me with those big sheepie eyes. I throw the ball. He brings it back again. No treats, just sheepie love. It doesn't get any better than this. :D :D :D

By the way, Marianne, remember the Sheepie in the canoe post? Guess what I got him to climb into the canoe and sit down twice this week. Fishing season is only a month away.

Good job Barney !!! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple:

( George, we got a mini basketball- our guy loves to
chase it around, he can't run off with it!!!
He's snoring up a storm right now , guess it was to much fun
for one day :D )
I've had many dogs in my life but never a snorrer, believe it or not. :D
You're so right George - it doesn't get any better than that!! Sweethearts that they are, those moments with them just make us melt.
:)

And every dog I've ever had snores! Beau's no exception, but so far, his isn't as loud as my Pumpkin's was (she shook the rafters!). 8O
:clappurple: Way to go, Barney!! Good boy!

George, my dogs have been snorers, too. What a time I have some nights, with hubby snoring on one side of the bed, and Drez snoring on the floor beside me on the other side! Stereo snoring!! :?

Chris
Pooh's favorite game! He wants to play fetch with any and all of his toys. It really is great....remember, tho....if when playing fetch the dog doesn't bring it back to you, do not chase the dog. This teaches the dog to always run away with it. Make the dog chase you!
:clappurple: That's a great achievement!!!!

Way to go!!!
Good job! I haven't played fetch with Momo much - but my brother keeps trying. :P She hasn't given it up yet - but we're getting there. You have such a smart boy.
Yay Barney! And yay to George for being such a good Dad. Bailey is in a distracted phase - I throw, he fetches, then half way back he sees a bird or a bush or a clump of dirt that is just sooo much more interesting than playing fetch! This is his first week off the leash in the yard (because he used to eat, well, everything!) so freedom is far more fascinating than fetch. Once he has the property scoped out I expect he'll regain interest in his tennis balls.
George, Do you think Barney could fly to Pennsylvania and teach Murphy to drop the ball? He will bring it back but will not drop it. Sometimes he will just keep running past us with it as though he is teasing us. Like na- na- nanana, its my ball and your not having it.
The secret is in the home made treats (cookies). Last week I took him for his daily walk to a neighborhood shopping center. I usually get out of my PU, put the leash on him and away we go. But that time before I could get the leash on him out he went and was running wild all over the grassy area. With cookie in hand I called him and he came running. He loves the things. :D
Great recall, Barney !!!

George,
Please share the cookie treat recipe with us.
Really could have used that secret cookie treat today!

Thanks !
Barney's favorite treats: The following is a repeat of my post of 2/27 "Training Treats" thread under Medical and Nutrition Forum.

Since one of my hobbies is baking, I bake dog biscuits for Barney. The following recipe comes from the intro to The Professional Pastry Chef by Bo Friberg of the Culinary Institute of America. He bakes them for his Akitas. I Roll the dough out and cut it into 1/2 in squares.

12 oz whole wheat flour
12 oz bread flour
2 oz wheat germ [I substitute oatmeal - its cheaper]
1 tsp. salt
2 tbsp. brown sugar
3 eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
3 oz powdered milk
1 cup water

Combine dry ingredients, add eggs. oil & water. Mix to form very firm dough that is smooth & workable. Adjust by adding flour or water. Cover dough and set aside to relax for 15 - 20 minutes. Roll to 1/2 in. thick. Cut out biscuits. Bake on sheet pan @375° for 40 min. or until brown and rock hard. Cool & store in covered container.
Thank you,
They look great, we'll try them ! :D
tecumseh learned really fast how to get the ball and bring it back.....he just wont drop it, he will sit there and stare at you til you grab it for a game of tug-o-war after each fetch
That's where the cookies come in. One hand on ball in his mouth, the other with a cookie at his nose, while repeating "drop it", "drop it"... Once he dropped it, I command "sit", then give him the cookie. The funny thing: when he dropped the ball and sat and received the cookie, I'd trow the ball again, he fetch the ball, get half way back, stop, drop the ball, eat the cookie, :D then bring the ball back. It takes a lot of cookies and alot of repetition, but he finally is getting the idea. Now most of the time he will put the ball in my lap.
