When should I dump out the food from the dog bowl?

With this heat, it is getting hard to predict how much Mady will eat. As a result, I am dumping food in the garbage on a daily basis. If I put food in her bowl (Purina Pro-Plan Shredded Blend, so basically kibble) and put a bit of water in it (which I had heard helps prevent bloat) and Mady doesn't eat it all, the next morning I dump that food in the garbage. Am I being wasteful or being safe in terms of the food becoming unsafe?

With water in it, I would probably dump it before that - for sure before bed that night. :?

Can you split the feeding? - part in the morning, part later in the day? That way the stuff that sits out is hopefully out only for a few hours.
I would continue throwing the food out in the morning. I have a real issue with food sitting out, but that's just me. Maybe cut back a bit for now and when it cools down increase the food back.

I have never heard about putting water on the kibble to avoid bloat. interesting.
Thanks! I will keep tossing it out and try, in the meantime, to feed her in smaller batches. She has always been a rather laid back eater. Weekdays are not so bad, but weekends she seems to have better things to do than eat!
I give Brick 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups in the evening. He finishes everything immediately.

When he was younger we gave him a LOT more per feeding and he wouldn't finish it all, so we'd leave it there for his next meal. Haven't done that in probably close to 4 years.
Olive is my first grazer and I love it - she eats when she is hungry. I only put a certain amount in her bowl so it is not a gigantic limitless bowl of food. It is also dry - Nutro lamb and rice (OES on the front of the bag), no water added. She is the tallest dog I have ever had, her legs look like stilts, but she is thin and slim - I actually think the grazing might help keep her svelt figure.
I put water on my dogs food too (and I know Amber does also), my guys get fed once a day and they usually eat it all but with the heat one or two dogs may not eat all of theirs so I dump it within a few hours. My girls eat about 5 cups a day and Willy eats 9 cups a day, Piper now that she is nursing gets her bowl refilled whenever it is empty so she's eating about 10-12 cups a day now.
Oh yes - I also put water on my dog's food. :D

On very rare occasions one won't eat it all. If there isn't someone else there to consume the remains, I dump it. I just am not comfortable leaving wet mushy food out for hours at room temperature, or worse - hot summer temps. :?

edit - you know, having MULTIPLE dogs usually solves this behavior..... :sidestep:

LOL! I was thinking that too. I NEVER have a morsel let ;-) And count me as another who soaks food in water.

If she isn't finishing it, perhaps cut back to the amount she is finishing? If she cleans it right up and stares at you for more or is still licking the bowl longingly :cow:, you can always add a bit more.

I swear she is saying 'if you would just add cheese to my food, I would eat it all up!'

Kim,

You mean you aren't adding cheese to her diner 8O 8O Just what kind of mean momma are you? :headbang: Poor poor pitiful Mady. :(

Seriously, have you tried adding a bit of cottage cheese to Mady's diner? It is good for their digestive tract, adds taste that they like and is relatively inexpensive if they don't eat it and it needs to be thrown out on occassion. However you cannot leave uneaten food out for any time in the hot summers and you really need to clean the bowls every day to reduce the risk of bacteria growth/stomach infection. Then again I would wash their bowls daily anyway - I wouldn't want to eat off dirty tablewear, why should our kids? The other additive we use is yogurt. In our house the Afghans have a generous tablespoon of cottage cheese mixed into their "standard" two cups of kibble diner while the Bobtails have about the same amount of yogurt. Although, Dawn has been know to demand a change from yogurt to cottage cheese or vice versa from time to time. (And every now and then she wants half and half!! Fussy little girl!! :roses: :roses: ) A very special and very rare treat is to add a bit of shredded cheddar or Mozarella cheese to their kibble instead of cottage cheese or yogurt. :excited: :yay: :excited: Nevertheless it is very rare for any of my kids not to eat all their food right away, even in this heat, although the basement is always very cool which is where they eat.

Thanks and Cheers

Carl
I do wash her bowls every day, of course! She can take hours to eat, that is my problem. I wish she would just gobble it all up instead of being so leisurely about it. I should give her some cottage cheese on the weekends, though, as she is a very reluctant eater on weekends (too much else to do) and I bet that would encourage her a bit. I feel like such a Ukrainian babushka, wanting my baby to eat, eat, EAT!!!

HaHaHa  I'm right there with ya!!! If Millie doesn't feel like eating her food I totally freak. :twitch: I have never let her skip one meal-- I'm always adding things in to entice her. I rotate between canned food, home cooked hamburger with rice, and ground turkey with oatmeal. And when all else fails......I mix in some cheese.
After all,..food make you big and strong!!!!!
