Volunteered at a local SPCA yesterday.

Once a year, our company shuts down for a day and sends it's employees into the community to volunteer at non-profit organizations across the area.
Last year I went to the Rescue Mission and did some painting.
This year I was sent to the Finger Lakes SPCA on York St. in Auburn, NY.

There were about 30 of us. We were painting, cleaning, doing yardwork, and handling the dogs.
Of course the women were the ones who got to interact with the dogs and not do any real work. :P
But I was painting in the kennel area. So I was there with all the dogs.
What was nice is that a few of their kennels were empty. An empty kennel is always good. :)

3 of them seemed to stand out more than the others.
There was Molly the Great Dane that was an abuse victim. She had come in 35 pounds under weight. They've put most of her weight back on. Sweet as could be. Hard to imagine that she has such a good disposition considering where she came from.
There was Benson, a black & white lab mix, that was just a sweet dog. When all the others would bark at you, he would sit at his gate and whimper quietly.
And then Lucy, what they said was a Labradoodle. (didn't look like a Labradoodle to me). What an angel. She was 11 months old. An owner turn in. She came from a Mennonite breeder in Penn Yan, NY. The woman who runs this SPCA said it was a puppy mill. The previous owner couldn't keep her because of her landlord. But Lucy's story may have a good ending. One of the volunteers was so smitten with Lucy that she took her out into the yard and played with her. Her mother is looking for a dog. She called her mom and told her to come down right away to check out Lucy. I left at that point so I don't know how that turned out. Fingers crossed that my co-worker's mom adopted Lucy. I'll find out on Monday.

I did take some pics of Benson & Lucy and I'll post them later (have to do MORE vacuumng  ). I also have a video of Lucy that I'll post.

Hope she gets a home, but then, I hope they all do.
WHAT a GREAT IDEA...............FOR THE COMPANY TO DO THAT.
I wish more companies did this type of volunteer work. I hope Lucy finds a home (I hope they ALL do--I would have taken Molly...)
Here's a link or 2 of the volunteer event, which we call the Beacon of Quality Event.

I am simply amazed at what a wonderful company you work for and really impressed by their ethics! Most would send $ but many times it's the man power that is needed. It sounds as if you all had a wonderful day and I can't wait to see the pics.
Here's a link to Benson.

I'll upload my pics & video right now.
Benson is adorable :D
Looks smart too - maybe lab/border collie?

What a cool thing for your employer to do as well - do places apply to be recipients of this program?
Great story. I wonder how many employees end up doing an extra volunteering, having been inspired by their day helping out.
Dawn,
I think the first year (last year), we went out to them.
I'm pretty sure for this year, the non-profits were requesting us come to them (after all the publicity it got). I do not know how the selection process works.

Kim,
A lot of the employees of Welch Allyn do volunteering on their own. It may not be at any of the places that we go as a company, though.
Here's pics of Benson & Lucy:

I don't have any of Molly. Sorry. I'll see if someone else does.
She's not on the website because she's not ready for adoption yet.
And a video of Lucy playing in the yard.

Lucy's sweet - and likely there as she's a doodle "reject" - she got the more golden hair and sheds.
I hope your coworker's person adopts her!
Interesting. Boeing had their volunteer day yesterday too. They encourage employees, family and friends to volunteer.
It was a hot day to be loading and unloading trucks of food when you are used to AC.

I think the shelter would be more fun - and everyone should leave with a new family member.
Thank you for sharing. Loved hearing there were empty kennels. Benson and Lucy are definitely cute pups. Hope your co-workers mother adopted Lucy.
Robin
Well, my co-worker's mom is not going to be adopting Lucy. :(

She lost her other dog just a few months ago and "her heart is still heavy with the loss".

I hope Lucy and Benson get adopted soon.
They were just too sweet to be in a pound.
What a great thing for your company to do! Glad you enjoyed your day!

To bad that Lucy isn't going to live with your friends Mom--
