Male vs. female- eliminating

Hi All- we are still due to get our puppy late in the summer and we have not specified male or female. My question has to do with how the males pee. All male sheepies that I know squat to pee and do not lift their leg. Has this been your experience? Is this something for this breed?

Please let me know. Thanks!

Lol. Mine's a squatter and he usually winds up peeing all over his front foot :)
Tucker has never really squatted- he sort of stretches out and usually
either gets his left front leg or steps in it imediately upon finishing. When
he was around 8 months or so he began lifting his left rear leg slightly,
and his aim at his front leg is much more accurate  but he doesn't
always lift. I would say half the time or there abouts. He has recently
taken to peeing on the sidewalk. Better for my grass I guess. 8)

Roger lifts and so did my last OES
Jasper's only 4 1/2 months old, but so far, he's still squatting.
bobs 10 months and he squats with a bit of a stretch
Tasker stretches, squats AND lifts. I guess it depends on how manly he is feeling at the moment :D

Seriously though, after watching him pee for alot of years I have noticed that for a "serious pee"(like first thing in the morning or when he's been inside for a long time) he will always stretch but if we are out side playing and he is just squirting he lifts his leg (he is neutered).

He was neutered at 5 or 6 months and I don't think he actually lifted his leg til he was a year or more.
Roger didn't start lifting until after a year also then intermitently, now all the time, almost.
The male oes that I babysat for a few weeks last month never lifted his leg, he was 9 months at the time. He was smelly, always had some urine on his legs, yuck. I prefer my girls, they are much cleaner. LOL
Sometimes if the stretch is long enough Clyde doesn't pee on himself. I've gone out a few times with him and lifted his leg for him to see if he'd get it but he just looked annoyed and I got peed on so I'm not doing that anymore.
Max is 4 months old and hasn't lifted his leg yet, my mom keeps asking when he will? He sort of stands with a bit of squat and does just fine!
Butterstoch.... I am rolling on the floor laughing at the thought of you trying to "show him how it's done" and getting peed on

Tasker doesn't always lift his leg but he never pees on himself.
My boyfriend kept picking on him so I thought I'd try to help the kid out. I almost tipped him over! It didn't work so he's on his own now. I was hoping the dogs at the dog park would serve as a model to him but it hasn't worked yet!
 You guys are making me laugh!! Beau does the stretch thing too. Once in awhile, not too often, he lifts his right rear leg just a little. But, he's not bad about peeing on himself. So, I guess that's a bonus!
depends on what he wants to pee on:

bug: squat
tree: leg lift
flower: squat
fence: leg lift
grass: squat
the retaining wall of the woman who yells at us everytime she sees us walk by: two leg lifts!
I have never seen Tucker pee 'on' anything. Very lucky there I would
think. I wouldn't want him peeing on my plants. I have a hard enough
time keeping up with the yellow spotted lawn.

Also, when he does lift it is always the left, never the right. I guess
I have a left footed dog!

i have been told that the dog will start lifting up his leg when he's about 8 months old, but won't find that out my boo is a girl!!!!
Tyler lifted for the longest time! Now that he is about to be 12 years old, he stands and pees, which I prefer. Then I have to deal with his walking and peeing. When he does that I call it sidewalk writing....
Thank you all for the info and some great laughs! I am still leaning towards a male-peed on front legs or not. That's what I was raised with and that is what Paddington is.

Thanks again! As I hear more about our upcoming puppy- I will share :D
I love my male too. It gets better with time anyway-- he doesn't seem to soak himself anywhere near as much anymore. Besides look at the laughs you get from the stories!
Barney's primarily a lifter. Like most other responders OES radar must be inoperative. My collies never stepped in their business. No so Barney :D

Now that you mention it Barney is right footed. Now if I could only teach him how to flush the chain when he's finished. :D
Our Mr. Winston hiked his leg to pee and it ran right down the other one. Never would have won a "whizzing contest". We're getting a new male puppy this weekend :clappurple: so as he grows we can observe how he does it. Hopefully he'll be like Maggie and be tidy about it.
Hey George, Isn' that Barney smart, his brother Murphy is a long stretched squat.
Congratulations on the new puppy Maggie McGee IV!!! I'm getting a new puppy this weekend too. Could hardly sleep last night.
