So it was sedation for him for the last 2 weeks in an attempt to slow him down. We were able to avoid the drain scenario thankfully The pills seemed to work a bit but it didn't stop him by any means. The swelling is down but his scrotum is still 'enlarged' but no longer feels as though it is fluid filled. Any one else have this happen? I intent to contact the vet again today buit I think he's getting tired of me a bit. Don't want to seem like a neurotic mom, just concerned. Like I said, as far as Atticus is concerned, he's perfect! thanks for the input, Lorraine |

It can take several weeks for the swelling to go down. Our 2-1/2 yr. old foster was neutered in late may and things are just starting to shrink down back there. As long as it doesn't appear inflamed or cause Atticus discomfort he's probably healing okay. If in doubt, it's worth another trip to the vet for a professional opinion. |
Several of my rescue boys has the problem. Since sheepdogs like to back up to get their butt rubbed, having a cold compress/ice pack handy helped. yeah, first time was a shock, but they learned if they tolerated the cold they got a good butt scratch. Several times a day they were in for this "treat." If the nose is occupied as well, it is even easier. Having a helping up front feeding TDF (to die fors) (treats) helps. |
Most vets do the neuter and leave the scrotal sack - so this does make a dependent pocket that fluids and swelling collect in. Gravity always wins! It's not unusual for it to look bigger than before the surgery for several days. And then it will be this loose swinging flap of skin for a long long time! Having unnuetered male rescue dogs, this is a common occurrence (not having complications, just swelling that needs careful monitoring) at our house after they get surgery. Ice works well - you can use diapers (toddler) or the panties female dogs wear when in heat to hold the ice packs too. Just make sure they are wrapped in something - no ice pack in direct contact w/ the skin. edit - just re read your post, and see surgery was 3 weeks ago. You shouldn't need ice now! |
