Pirate suddenly has a hot spot on his "arm" (yes, I call his front legs, arms!). I have some meds from a couple years back that was given to him for a hot spot. Pharmaseb Topical Spray and Hydroxyzine caps. I've started him on them yesterday and but don't see any change...yet. I know it's too soon. Please remind again, exactly what a hot spot is. And is this the suitable treatment? |

It's a moist dermatitis - usually from a spot that doesn't get enough air and is moist and then gets infected. My chocolate lab Macy was my vulnerable one, she usually had a flareup around her neck/under ear area every spring as the dead fluffy hair was ready to let loose. I think the damp spring weather contributed as well. Often the area needs to be shaved, washed w/ antiseptic and then something applied topically to it. There are 2 schools of thought - using creams like neosporin and using dry powders. I've always used the ointment, and had good results. My vet also started simultaneously prescribing an oral antibiotic as well for her. The hydroxizine will help the skin sensitivity and dry it a bit, but is not in any way an antibiotic. It is commonly used for allergy-type skin issues, to stop itching. I don't know what the active ingredient in that spray is...but it likely will help! I hope Pirate starts healing soon. |
Hi Deb!! Great to see you back Just as Dawn says... keep it moist or keep it dry. I keep it dry with NeoPredef powder. I wash the area daily, dry completely and apply the powder. It's an antibiotic, anti-itch and anti-inflammatory powder. We've been able to avoid oral antibiotics so far. Whatever you use, you'll likely also need to use a barrier to prevent licking. http://www.vetinfo.com/dhotspots.html |
