Belle, at 13 1/2, who has never eaten anything non-edible in her perfect life, vomited up one of my scrunchies yesterday. A big one. She's still off, vomiting again overnight and still with a touch of the runs. I called my vet as soon as the scrunchie came up and she told me to not feed her last night and watch her, but to give her a small meal of spinach with a little hamburger and rice in the morning. She's still hungry but despite that she only ate a portion of the small portion I gave her this morning. Watching her carefully. It's been two hours and nothing has come out in a less than desirable form so far, but who knows. Just praying she didn't eat anything else and doesn't have an obstruction because I really don't want to have to subject her to surgery at her age. I can't understand what possessed her to eat the scrunchie to begin with. So out of character for her. Kristine |

hope she is ok but you gotta go guess we all thought it was only with puppys makes us all be more careful |
Fingers crossed she is just waiting on her tummy to settle before feeling like eating again. I know mine will do this when they aren't feeling well. They don't want to create more of a "clean-up" if it's not necessary. They seem embarrased about it. As for what possessed her to eat something like that.....as they age they seem to do some of these "dumb" things. Isaac will do the same thing. He eats all his kibble, is at a good weight (so you know I'm not starving him) & for some reason I caught him trying to eat some of the crushed limestone in the dog run the other day! I had to literally pry his mouth open & retreive it! Try doing that with an old guy who has trouble keeping his balance on a good day & here I am twisting his head & prying his mouth open. If nothing else he still has a lot of strength left in his jaws! Now we are talking about the one of all of mine who wouldn't eat anything that wasn't his kibble or Purina One biscuit! He acts like he is being poisoned if I try to get him take a pill even wrapped in cheese . Forget about stuffing it down his throat. Must be memories from back when he was 4 & I kept stuffing the Flagyl down his throat & he remembers the bad reaction he had to it! Nope, not Isaac. He's going to play it safe & stick to kibble & biscuits & for heaven's sake don't change the brand or flavor! Do you think that maybe since they are over 13 that these kind of things are on their "bucket list?" You know.....they've been the model dog for you their entire life & they feel like they need to be like everyone else at least once in their life? |
I hope she is feeling better! |

The situation itself is scary especially when it is so out of character for a particular dog, giving you one more thing to concern yourself with when they are seniors. That being said.... Marilyn, I had to laugh at that thought..... "before I go I am going to eat a scrunchie" and I can only imagine Belle thinking afterwards "well I tried it but now I really have to wonder about some of the stupid goats I live with" |

I hope Belle feels better soon. Jenn |

"before I go I am going to eat a scrunchie" and I can only imagine Belle thinking afterwards "well I tried it but now I really have to wonder about some of the stupid goats I live with" I think her bucket list kicked in the day she turned 12. Suddenly the perfect dog did perfectly uncharacteristic things like look me straight in the eye when I called her and clearly say: "no, I don't think so. I hear you, but I no longer have to come when you call. Check your contract. That clause has expired." I've lost track of how many naughty things she's done in the past 1 1/2 years and then just turned to grin at me as if to say: "So what are you going to do about it?" Since she's still a bit clingy I had her outside with me while I was weeding and she layed down, alternating between watching me, watching the road, and taking a nap. She seems more comfortable and, knock on wood, nothing's come back up yet. And many thanks for the concern, guys. I can't remember the last time I sat around worrying about a dog, but I do know it feels much better to not have to do so on my own. Kristine |
I hope EVERYTHING come out OK!!!!! Huggs to that wonderful Sybil from Pearl!!!!! |
Thank goodness it came back up! We've had a thing or two eaten here too. Christmas tree light bulbs when Bumble was little and Bell ate a leg off a stuffed toy. The light bulbs passed safely and the leg came back up the next day on my son as he was sleeping. Quote: I think her bucket list kicked in the day she turned 12. Maggie's getting to be the same way... she'll be 13 around October. She's lost some hearing but definitely knows hand signals. |
Hope she is feeling better !!!! |
Hope she is feeling better today! Belle's Bucket List! |
Hmm now this bucket list has got me thinking. So the perfect dog all of a sudden in their senior years wants to become the naughty puppy or keeping mommy on her toes. Sounds reasonable to me.Imagine being the perfect angel all your life, has got to be a tad boring. Anyway, sending good thoughts that she is back to her old self soon. Robin |
Oh geez, BELLE?? Miss Perfect Girl - makes you wonder what's going on in their heads......... Maybe she did feel the urge to try the goat action out...but a scrunchie?? I hope she's doing better and all is well in there. My friend Linda's senior Samoyed Dillon is actually going through that. He has always been the perfect dog - a Samoyed who loves and excelled at obedience is not the norm! Now that he's 12 he is part goat - and eats any kind of paper whenever he can steal it. |
Belle--hope you are ok! |
