No way was that going to work with a nonenglish speaker who didn't know about pizza........that's the best joke flop ever! (and a cute joke) |
In addition to the language barrier (he does speak some English tho), there's the cultural issues. I loved it when the anchor tried to mime his way out of it, by saying "one" and putting his hands into a prayer position, and "everything" by doing jazz hands for the Dalai Lama. If the Dalai Lama were to get ANY part of that joke, I would guess he would understand THAT part. It's the "pizza with everything" part about which he has no concept. Not only is that cultural, but he's probably a vegetarian.... If I recall correctly, the Dalai Lama is by all accounts a very funny man with a great sense of humor. He should reply with a video: He should say a quick joke in Tibetan, with no subtitles: "The Dalai Lama walks into a pizza shop and asks: What is the meaning of slice?" and then a big pause, hangs his head and in English says... "I knew that wasn't going to work!" Then a big smile and "Thank you for helping to bring some laughter to millions of people." and whatever other message he cares to deliver to us. |
That has been one of my favorite jokes for years! I've told it to native english speakers and gotten the same look in return. |
