This "Thundershirt" discussed here recently apparently works pretty well: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=33728 |
Talk with your vet. Medication may help if you have any notice of a storm coming. I'm trying to work through this with one of mine too. Panda whines a little but her main problem is shaking, panting and drooling. I can sympathize with your girl's behavior because Panda also had severe separation anxiety when we first got her which caused her to potty in her crate along with other anxiety behaviors. Panda thinks that during a thunderstorm everyone needs to go to bed. Not kidding... she wants to go in the bedroom and if we don't follow, she'll start whining. If a storm rolls through at night and we're sleeping, she's not bothered by them. She just seems to feel safe there. So it's just the opposite of your girl. Have you tried to reduce the thunder sounds with say the continuous sound of a fan, TV or music? Could you leave a light on in the room so the lightening isn't as startling? The picture above was from the last storm... you can see the drool. I took some videos but need to see if any convey the level of stress. It's just sad because we can't reason with them. I put her Thundershirt on her and took her into the kitchen for some distraction. We did some training during the storm and I think it helped to get her focus off her fear. Some dogs are so scared it's beyond them to focus on anything else. Panda loves it when she's dressed up and I take pictures (probably just the treats ) so that's what we did. The peony was from the vet's office that day! CD grows the most beautiful flowers. It was on the table so I stuck it in her Thundershirt. Excuse her eye-wings... we're growing out the hair there. After a little while she relaxed enough to go out to the fence and poop. It was still raining. There weren't any cracks of thunder during her trip but I view this as progress. She came back in and after the storm passed, she went to bed. The problem with thunderstorms is that we don't get them coming through on a regular basis so it's more difficult to try to desensitize a dog to them. I was also playing YouTube videos of thunderstorms and fireworks... but they still pale in comparison to the real thing. Hoping you can find some answers. |
thundershirt, Bach's Rescue Remedy either on their tongue or in their water. There's a plug in.....something Comfort that releases a scent like a lactating bitch that is said to calm the dogs....makes me want to eat ice cream Finally scotch works well, for you along with ear plugs so you don't hear the huffy puffy. |
I've been reading alot of good things about the thunder shirt. Being 4th of July is only a few days away, I probably don't have time to order one. What we do is Bach's rescue Remedy. We do use way more than the four or five drops they recommend however. Then I put a fan and/or the ac pumped up, windows closed...some music on the TV and in their crates for sleep....With a sheet covering the crate over three sides... |
Many pet stores sell Thundershirts... I got mine from a small independent store. |
The thunder shirt has stopped working. The first few times it was amazing. Now Gigi is back to barking and running. We have had storms everyday. Any suggestions |

Any suggestions This year I'm trying "animal apawthecary tranquility blend" with the thundershirt. The vet told me it wouldn't hurt to try. We did a test dose of the herbal blend and it seemed to be calming, but the fireworks will be the true test. Hank is not afraid of them, as much as he wants to kill the fireworks. He thinks they are attacking us, so we'll see if its calming enough. |

One of my obedience students has her younger dog in a Thunder Shirt. He's a 6 mo old male GSD. He's a nervous guy, and also gets car sick. He does much better w/ the Shirt, and it's helping the car sickness too. In fact tonight they tried just the Shirt (had been doing ginger snap cookies too), and he made it on the half hour drive just fine. |
