Thanks for you help Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

When we brought Zoey home, Bentley was FAR worse then that. Jen spent the next day home off work and literally did nothing but sit between them and share her attention evenly between them for much of the day. Bentley finally must have realized that Zoey wasn't going to be a threat to his attention and lightened up. Within a couple days, they were and stayed inseparable. The only rifts we had were the occasional spats over food. Maybe a little 'even love' couldn't hurt with Mattie... Vance |
He's probably being an annoying brat in ways you can't quite discern and she's using her bitch's license to set him straight. The fact that she hasn't tried to kill him bodes well. Once he's on the straight and narrow, chances are these things will cease, or at least diminish. If memory serves she has been dealing with health issues which may contribute to her lack of tolerance. Don't feel sorry for Frankie, though - that will just drag the adjustment out even further. He needs to learn to respect her. If she's basically OK with other dogs she'll get the uppity thing under control. The sooner he learns that bitches rule, boy dogs drool - and preferably far, far away from her "stuff" and her "person", the happier she'll be. It's amazing how many behaviors we humans consider "cute" which are actually terribly offensive in dog language. The pawing at her (!!!) and sniffing her face - terribly rude, an outright challenge in many ways. I'd bite the little bugger. Kristine |
Thanks for the information. I always thought what Frankie was doing was cute like you said. Mattie does not tolerate other dogs from what we can see. (on walks or dogs walking by) So I guess we are lucky she hasn't tried to kill Frankie yet. Your right though, he is being an obnoxious kid. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |

Kristine Kristine, I always enjoy your blunt responses and I learn so much from them! 'I'd bite the little bugger' made me laugh. You highlight how easy it is for us to misunderstand what the dogs are communicating. I would never have thought that Frankie sniffing Mattie's face was rude, but it makes sense. I have been watching more of the dogs are the park and it is really interesting to see the dogs sort it all out. Any good recommendations on dog behaviour? I would love to learn even more about these fascinating beasts of ours. |

Dogs sniffing each other's butts is very polite! |
I am reading through and was going to say what Kristine did - Mattie's in the right on this one. I was reading through your post what Frankie is doing, and cringing that you were correcting MATTIE! Keep doing that, and she will quit the gentle warnings to him and go straight to a bite or some other physical mode...as she will learn that the more gentle warnings get her in trouble w/ you.... They are just doing dog language stuff, nothing wrong at all. Still working out what roles each play between the 2 of them. Frankie wants more, and Mattie says "lay off, kid". And total typical younger male/older female stuff. So, if it helps, things are going the usual way they play out in that scenario! |
Lisa... you are describing Heart and Pearls relationship. A couple of months ago, Heart got in Pearls face and I told Heart to BACK OFF!! She did but then, she went right back up to her and began to lick her mouth...uh..oh~~~ Pearl COBRA'D her, she yelped and ran over to me.. Heart's tongue was bleeding... (Heart hasn't tried to get in Pearl 'space' since.) |
Ok now I understand. I just thought Frankie was being sweet. I don't scold Mattie I just in a normal voice tell her no or say her name. I won't do that anymore. I guess I just wanted them to be best of friends. Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
Affection between dogs can take other forms too. Abby and Bert don't cuddle, and they rarely play beyond a bit of wrestling in the yard when super wound up. Abby wont tolerate any kind of "pushy" behavior from him, and does NOT share with him in any way...but...if anything scares or threatens Bert? Abby becomes a mama bear instantly! Bitches often go with "tough love" |
It sounds like they play the parts of big sister/little brother perfectly That seems to be their relationship. It doesn't mean they don't care about each other, but maybe show it differently than you would like. When I was growing up we had brothers from the same litter....Jake and Izzy. Jake was often an *ss to Izzy, but you never saw anything more pitiful than Jake waiting at the garage door for Izzy to get back from the vet or whatever trip he got by himself |

I guess I just wanted them to be best of friends. Lisa Frankie and Mattie That is exactly like my dad was (wanting the kids to be friends).... My dad grew up as an only child ( his mom -"and if I had my way I wouldn't have had any")...and he never was allowed to have pets either ("too dirty")...yes, grandma was an interesting lady... So, this sets the stage for my sisters and I. I have 2 younger sisters, all in 4 years, and we fought and bickered ...like normal siblings! But it drove my dad CRAZY - he thought it was so great we had siblings, like he never got to have...and thought we should just love each other! He would usually make a comment when we'd be squabbling about how he always wanted sibs, and we should enjoy each other instead of fighting. I didn't really get it all as a kid, but totally see where he was coming from as I grew up. |
I always worried about Pearl and Heart's relationship too. But, at Sheepiepalooza this year I was surprised to witness just how much Heart loves Pearl. ... At Sheepiepalooza, Pearl would walk around the shelter a lot, (maybe from nerves, or maybe she just was glad to be in the middle of all the people). As soon as Pearl would stand up, Heart would walk right along side of her. I think she was trying to protect her and making sure she wouldn't lose her way. Heart does this in the yard too. She will wait for Pearl to 'go' and then walk along side of her into the house, kind of like a seeing eye dog...for a dog. |

Gabby pesters Dillon. Sometimes Dillon plays, sometimes he doesn't. But Gabby is quite protective of Dillon, like he knows he's old and more vulnerable. And no shurtling (as they are boys), but they hump... |

(Heart hasn't tried to get in Pearl 'space' since.) Kenley does this to Marley all the time We haven't gotton to the COBRA'D bit yet as i think Marls it to soft. Marls is sat there with his mouth open, teeth showing and growling in his best "I mean it way" and Kenley is sat licking Marleys teeth whilst his lips are curled |
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Awww.. that is sooo cute... (Heart wouldn't have much of a tongue left if she tried that on Pearl.... ) |
Laika lets Langley know when they can play by walking up and tapping him on the head with her paw. It is very funny. |

I'd be telling him no and praising her not tearing his face off! Owen sniffs Bear's face relentlessly and makes him crazy. I can't believe Owen's lived this long without a significant retaliation from Bear. I think he can only thank Clyde because usually he steps in and steers him away to play with him. Most days, I don't know what I'd do without Clyde. |
