The vet has had us eliminate any beef from his diet (which was only some of his treats) and Dr. Foster Lawn Guard. She also prescribed a different ear drop, Posatex, a daily Benadryl and said a daily Tums "won't hurt." His food is California Natural Lamb and Rice Puppy which she recommended we not change yet but when/if we do to try venison and potato. An internet search showed numerous websites saying systemic yeast infections are often misdiagnosed as food allergies. Low thyroid is often the root cause of systemic yeast infections and we all know sheepdogs have inherent thyroid issues. His symptoms are a 2" spot of orange underhair on his chest, orange underhair on his elbows and feet and black crud in his ears which turns the hair orange. He was improving then one ear started getting sores, now both have sores. As I said he doesn't act like this causes any discomfort. Does anyone on the forum have experience with this? Thanks. |

Before anything I think you should try pro biotic supplements. You can buy them in any drug store or health food store. It does sound like yeast to me, so restoring the balance in his natural gut flora is the first step. It may be a couple weeks before you see any really noticeable differences, but it is well worth the wait. I would also start off with regular ear washes with an anti fungal wash, there is an amazing recipe that I've used and it works wonders. You mix witch hazel, boric acid powder and gentian violet drops and flush the ear out a LOT. The recipe can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9198&hilit=gentian |

The recipe can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=9198&hilit=gentian That recipe is a standard w/ bassets (ears from hell!), and I have a friend who gets all the ingredients and sells the kits as a fundraiser for basset rescue. It is a wonderful recipe...just need to remember the gentian violet does stain. |
Thanks for the info and recipe. A website says gentian violet can cause tattooing if applied to wounds or open sores. Dexter has open sores on his ears now so I will wait until they heal. He will miss 2 shows because of orange ear hair, I would hate if he missed the rest of them because he has purple tattooed ears. |
You should get an anti fungal ear drop from your vet then, or it may not heal.... The pro biotics help heal from the inside out, and prevent re occurances, but the ears can get really bad really fast if not treated. |
Dexter's ears have cleared up completely other than some orange staining which is slowly clearing up. An issue is that we don't know what cleared it up. He was out of the pool only for about 2 days so we feel the pool wasn't what caused it. We got rid of anything beef at the vet's suggestion. Stopped giving him Dr. Foster's Lawn Guard and now we have a spotted yard, thankfully he concentrates his bathroom activity in one area. Started him on a probiotic. Used a different antibiotic at the vet's prescription. We would like to start back on Lawn Guard but not at the risk of creating another yeast infection. |
