Tests for CHIC

Please explain the tests for CHIC? I looked on the OFFA site and did not read exactly what tests are required for Old English.
Thank you,
Robin

Good question, Robin.

If you go to the OFA site you have to scroll waaaay down to get to the CHIC link (on the left) Once there you would look up CHIC breeds, pick ours, and that should bring you to http://www.caninehealthinfo.org/brdreqs.html?breed=SD

The requirements for inclusion in the Canine Health Information Center for our breed are as follows:

REQUIRED:
■Hip Dysplasia: OFA Evaluation - OR OVC Evaluation - OR PennHIP Evaluation
■Eye Clearance: CERF evaluation - recommend each year until 5, thereafter every 2 years
■Autoimmune thyroiditis: OFA evaluation from an approved laboratory. It is recommended that the test be repeated annually up to 5 years of age, and every 2 years thereafter.

RECOMMENDED (at this time - this can be changed to required at some point in the future)

■Congenital Cardiac Database (Optional): OFA evaluation with exam by cardiologist
■Congenital Deafness (Optional): OFA evaluation based on BAER test
■Multiple Drug Sensitivity/MDR1 (Optional):Washington State University Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology Lab test results registered with the OFA - WSU VCPL. First Generation Offspring of tested dogs eligible for Clear By Parentage

The above are determined as follows: the OESCA Health & Research Committee (HRC) formulates a recommendation weighted heavily by aggregate information gleaned from the OESCA health surveys, which many people who frequent the oes.org graciously took part in, and then the HRC sends their recommendation to the OESCA board which has the final say in the matter. Just FYI.

Note that it does not matter whether the dog passes or fails any or all testing - the strength of an open health registry is the willingness to share available health information regardless of the results. As long as above testing is conducted and submitted to the OFA, the dog will be issued a CHIC number.

As of today, dogs that are issued CHIC numbers, or whose status is updated by submitting re-testing results, will be listed in OESCA's quarterly publication, the Old English Times.

Are you getting Bella CHIC'd? :-)

Kristine
Thank you for all of this very important, informative information.
We have done the OFA hip and the OFA thyroid along with the cerf test.
So far I have seen Bella's hip score uploaded to the OFFA site.
Since I have finished all of the required tests...will the CHIC logo automatically be added or do I have to ask for that?
Thank you,Kristine.

You should get a CHIC letter in the mail, at least that's what happened when I did Chewie's a few years ago. I just added it to his test file at home with the rest of his paperwork.
We've done all the requireds and suggested ones. Plus elbows, as I was curious and we do all these crazy sports activities!
As long as everything was sent in, it is automatic, yes, and you'll get a nice little certificate of sorts with her CHIC #.

With OFA hip and OFA thyroid submissions, you fill out an OFA application in order to submit, but CERF is a little different. Even though the examiner kept a copy you have to submit your original copy with a check (instructions on back, just in case you missed this - to me it's not as obvious as the other testing) and mail it as instructed to CERF. CERF then "releases" the information to the OFA. Once all three test results are released on the OFA site, the dog gets added to the CHIC database as well.

Dawn, I thought elbows were recommended, but they're not listed, so I must be making that up. I'll mention it at the HRC meeting tonight. Not that the breed has a big problem with elbow dysplasia based on what's known, but it's easy to do them at the same time you do hips, so, yes, it seems like more people are doing elbow clearances as well these days, not a bad thing.

Thank you, thank you about the cerf info. The reasons the others have not shown up yet is...
Thyroid panel was sent to the Antec lab in Mississippi,I have the results, but need to take her back and redraw so that the tests is performed at the Antec lab in N.Y..I specifically asked for OFA and paid for OFA thyroid panel, but somebody didn't send it to the correct lab.
The cerf was not sent in and thanks to you,Kristine, now I know why, it does not show up yet.
I am so glad I posted this question!
