One thing is certain, woe to anyone who might ever think of attacking my family! There is some steel hidden in this giant fluffball! |

go mady i imagine sheepies are far scarier when they're heard but not seen. she looks an absolute sweetheart, you should buy her a doberman disguise for night time |
What's also curious about her guard dog routine, is that she has never been alarmed by someone coming to the door. She does not bark at all when the doorbell rings, but she races to the door and always goes crazy with bum wiggles when the door opens whether it's her favourite cousins or an unknown pizza delivery man. And it's not just the doorbell, our postman didn't know we even had a dog for the longest time. So I am not sure exactly what combination of things triggers her guard dog instinct (the smell of raccoons and skunks definitely does). |
All three of my OES ONLY bark in a guarding way when someone comes to the front door. Middle of the night, doesn't matter if someone is IN THE HOUSE, they don't bark. Heck we're lucky if one of them raises their head to see what woke them up. Glad you have a protector! I have 275 pounds of lazy. |
lol, here we have almost 90lbs of scaredy cat, 10lbs of furious at all times, and 70lbs of half deaf half can't be bothered i'm old. i'd love mine to be protective at night, i wouldn't have to rely so heavily on my bullet/axe proof quilt. |
i wouldn't have to rely so heavily on my bullet/axe proof quilt good one, thanks for the laugh ema. |
Sometimes I really miss my fearless 106 pound manly man and his deep protective bark that would vibrate our steel door. Other times I don't miss being bitten or having the fear that my boy was gonna bite a neighbor or friend who made what he'd consider a social faux pas - like walking nearby while he had a rawhide. All in all, I guess I'd take the cuddly fraidy cat boy who barks at the door then hides behind mommy's skirt. I'm not mentioning any names here. |
Bentley had that deep bark regardless. We loved it. It was the bark of authority. Zoey still has that squeaky puppy bark... until someone come up onto our porch. Then that deep bark comes out. It is definitely a defense triggered bark. Vance |
Is there a difference in behavior of a watch dog vs. a guard dog? Does a watch dog just let you know something is going on while a guard dog will physically protect you? |
Paula O. wrote: Is there a difference in behavior of a watch dog vs. a guard dog? Does a watch dog just let you know something is going on while a guard dog will physically protect you? And additionally to Paula's question. Do you think it's going against their instincts if you wanted to train your watch/guard dog to not guard?? |
I only have one, Harry. Glacier can't hear. MO will bark a terrific bark but only if the others are also involved. Jack would just as soon stay in bed and bark Expecting a contractor any minute, we'll see if the heat and smoke from all the forest fires about stirs them fron the house.......I don't expect them to move. |
Tiggy has only done that bark once. It was at night and I suspect there was someone in the alley over our back fence. When someone comes to the front door she just does her excited higher pitch bark but even that scares some people. I'm more than happy for her to do her guard dog bark if there's someone lurking, especially at night. |
I've heard the different barks from both of mine at different times. I'm not sure if they would protect me if something were to happen. I know they would want to, espiecially Simon, but not sure if they would be too scared to. David, glad that Mady settled down and scared off the intruders with that bark. |
Sheepies do have a heroic bark, glad Mady is so protective! |
Good girl Mady! Grrrrrrrrrrr! Cindy |
About a year after we were married, my husband began working in the oilfield service industry. If they were short crews, he would have to fill in. That meant he had very strange hours - gone for days at a time, then returning in the dead of night. Maudie, my husband's OES (and the main reason I married him ) became very protective when he was gone. Any strange noise and she would bark like crazy. When my husband would return, he smelled different than he did on regular office days. She would not let him in the bedroom until I told her it was okay, it was "Daddy." It was pretty funny to watch as she was officially his dog. But if he was home, she let him worry about the strange noises. She must have passed that "job" onto the other dogs as they have all been that way. |
