When to cut?

Good morning all you oes lovers.

Being new to the OES club, and a Rookie dog's best friend, My wife Anne and I are debating as to when we should give Mao, who is turning 4 month today, his first cut.

I am guessing that sheepies prefer less fur in the warm summer days, and will be glad to have a thick coat when winter arrives, but then again what do I know! Add to that the fact that the dog is a puppy and I am now completely unsure of anything :? :? :?

There is also the question on what type of clipper I should purchase, but even before that, I would like to get your advice on when Mao should get his first cut.

thanks in advance.

Mao's dad, Ter.

No, I wouldn't unless you are getting mats. Common sense dictates when to exercise your pup in summer. No heat, not hot asphalt/sidewalk surfaces, etc. Time to possibly trim down will be coming soon enough with the coat change and the impossible mats.

Of course a light scissor cut isn't going to hurt anything and will get the little muchkin used to grooming.
Dahlia just turned 6 months old and I haven't clipped her yet. I brush her every couple of days just to keep her used to the grooming. Her feet were trimmed (Between her toes) and that is about it. I will have her trimmed down a bit later in July since her coat is just starting to change a little bit. Her ears however have matted, so I have been slowly working on those since she isn't a big fan of that. But, I give her a stuffed Kong with loads of good stuff and I can work on them to try and de-matt them. I think with her swimming and getting her head wet under the hose all of the time, I didn't realize how matted they get in that crease area on her ears. I now know I need to pay more attention to that area! I noticed her black ear gets more matted then her white ear. Her white hair seems to be a little bit finer.
We have kept our dog short in the spring/summer/fall and let him grow out to about 4 inches in the winter.
Its a hard decision to cut a puppy as there so cute.
Theres no age limit, but if you have no matts then i would leave it just a bit longer.
Get them used to grooming as when you start witj clipping and scissoring it takes a long time do for now i would shape the feet, clear the pads, and just practise your scissor work just to get them used to it. Just seperate a section of hair bout 2" from side to side make it spike up and trim the edges
when you choose to clip, longer blades dont go through matts, sometimes you can slice through yhe edhe and work through. If your dog is matt ftee then try some metal attacment combs they can leave upto 2" of coat
As for what clipper ive tried alsorts, currently using andis agv and there good, quiet dont vibrate but have the power lead from hell, moser switch blade, comfiest clippers, quiet but do vibrate a bit. Laube lazer are heavy duty noisy vibrate and heavy. Oster golden i had an old pair so dont know if new are better, heavy and vibrate.
So out of all these the andis. Or try the oster golden
Best on the market are easculap but i went to biy some and thought they were very heavy
Mao is around the same age I decided to clip Lily down. She was going through her coat transition and getting matts. I regretted clipping her almost instantly. (She didn't seem to care about her hairstyle either way.)

As for the summer cuts, I haven't made it a whole summer with her yet (she is 9 months) but she seems to be doing just fine. If I thought she was too hot or uncomfortable, she would get clipped.
Thank you all for the great advices.

It really helps and is greatly apprecieated.

Ter.
