Stupid me...I gave all the boys a bone..and always being cautious each go to a separate part of the house. I couldn't use the outside enclosure as it was raining heavily and as the current foster cat room is unused at the moment so I gave Panda his bone in that room. The door to that room is always shut and the boys never go in there. I heard Panda happily gnawing his bone and when I was satisfied he was finished I couldn't open the door! Some heavy aluminum blinds which had been leaning against the wall not yet installed had fallen and were blocking the door. Worse when I opened the door a crack unable to move it any further..Panda stuck his big head out and now he was stuck! Oh gasp..why out of all the dogs did it have to be him??? Even after 7 years I still am always extra cautious around my boy as anything viewed as agression from anyone can cause him enormous stress. Should I call the fire dept? I decide not to for two reasons. The last time they were here several years ago we experienced a flood and I had to call them to help me rescue the bunnies. I don't want them to have a chance to laugh at me again. Plus I know having strange men pushing on his head especially after his past abuse background would not be a good thing. Oh what to do??? Now with his head stuck in the door...how am I going to push that thing out of the way? I get weiners and after his consumption of several and his attention elsewhere I manage to move the blinds a few inches at a time. After 45 mins and he a fully belly...he's free!!!! |

Very creative!! I'm glad you were able to persevere and get the dang door open. Although we would be in trouble, as the grandkids eat the hotdogs as fast as I buy them. (Todd grilled the last ones for lunch for them today ) |
Good Lord, why Panda? How'd you move the blinds? |
CONGRATULATIONS!!! The boy maybe knocked them down himself just to make you crazy Have a cocktail and celebrate the best 'man' for the job was a WOMAN. |
Another day in Marianne's life, it's never boring. Remember when we had our first dog, he had a habit of running off so gave my oldest son who was about 7 or 8 at the time a piece of liver to entice him with. It worked, but Jim ate the liver. |
i just love your storys keep them coming sorry had to lol at your expence |
I like the firemen and the bunnies story.... Poor Panda.......not wait........yummer bone followed by hotdogs.......LUCkY Panda!! |
ICH! That was hilarious! It was with much persistance and painstaking movement of those blinds (wriggling them back and forth) that I finally managed to open the door slightly. To the left of the door was a heavy piece of excercise equiptment (left by previous owner) so just pushing the blinds back was impossible. Yup! somehow woman know that brains over brawns is better sometimes...(sorry menfolk). Egads! Yes why is it ALWAYS Panda and never the other dogs that finds themselves in situations? The others who I can move/push/open their mouths or anything else...never them! Panda was the one that went through some briar bushes at my sisters and had hundreds of seed heads/prickles stuck in his fur, or the time he had a bottle cap stuck fast to his back molar, the time he had chicken wire stuck to his butt and tangled in his fur. Oh sigh..full sedation at the vets each time he found himself in a "predicament". Okay so this is only the 4th incident since he came to live with me ..it still sends my heart pounding...nooooooo not Panda! It's now been since 2004 that my dear Panda (formally Robin) has been with me. He's still as active as ever and while so many issues have long dissapeared and he's gentle and loving...but there's his past that I don't forget. This was the original post where many members remember hearing about him for the first time. He changed 99% since those long ago horrible days but I still don't take chances. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=764 |
I wonder how Roy and Elby are doing... What fun to read through that story again. Sigh... |
Thanks for posting the old thread. I never knew the story of Robin/Panda. What a beautiful story. Marianne you are truly an angel! Panda was truly meant to be with you. |
The last time I wrote on that post was in 2005 to give a yearly update, which I still do from time to time. I repost the story as it was was the catalyst for others that chose to rescue dogs. I still wipe tears each time I read it as it seemed like it happened to someone else - it's like reading a book with a happy ending! It never ceases to amaze me - what a great story this is - even if I wasn't involved. It's like it's about someone else. Ron and other long time posters probably shed a tear reading some of the post and wondering what happened to all those wonderful people? Grannie Annie (the Grand Dame of OES rescue)phoned me last year to offer encouragement regarding Gilligan she remembered and asked about Panda from all those years ago. Lastly, the story snowballed as Panda's original owner and I have kept in touch and she has become involved with Dog Rescue in Hong Kong (which didn't exist at the time). Her father, mother and other relatives visited from Hong Kong several years ago and shed tears when they saw him. That "puppymill" was charging her 500 monthly to keep Panda and at the time there were no rescues that existed and no place for him to go. The 3 kennel people hated him and would use their sticks to torment him. Yes, he was a biter but given a chance to live with love he has never bite anyone or attempted to. As for Roy and Enby's last post...yes - they (the HK vets, breeder and kennel people) were wrong about him...life in fear and dogs react in fear. Live in love and they will give it back. The dog currently laying at my feet while I type this is not the same boy that I picked up from the airport so many years ago. Although he's now nearing 11 years old (OMG!! where did the time go?) He still has issues with people restraining him but ONLY then. People who meet him never believe there exist that side of him as he's the friendliest of the 4 dogs, but as I mention after 8 years I still am always on guard. This is Panda taken after his "head stuck in the door incident" and you can see he wasn't fazed and freaking out like his poor mother. Thanks Poolmom - As you can see Panda now lives the good life at the Chateau Marianne...ha ha. |
Oh Marianne my heart was pounding reading this post.I remember when my baby Forrest cut his nose on a piece of glass. I was more freaked out than he,but when it comes to your furkids it is like your own flesh and blood. You are right, where has the time gone? I want to just say thank goodness you were able to get that darn door open. From the picture I can definitely say Panda did enjoy all of those wieners! A happy ending is a good ending, Robin |
Awww Robin, I can only imagine how you must have felt. Noses bleed a lot too and seeing your furkid like that! Yup, it sets the heart pounding. Oh sheesh I've done it again..numerous spelling mistakes and I can't count now! Just a correction Panda came to my home in 2004 as a 3 yr old, His birthday is this week! He'll be 10 and it's been 7 years since he arrived. I was so confident back then..and while he did better than I expected that first year..once the honey moon period was over after those first couple days...OMG! Just last year I posted of another milestone - I could move his paws out of the way when I vaccuumed..that took 6 yrs. It took 4 years for him to get over vomiting when he heard firecrackers. Other things took aprox a year but when I look at my boy now I think, "you've come a long way baby". No wonder I was so thrilled when Gilligan arrived with no issues...he's such an easy boy. I didn't know what that was like. Ha Ha! |
I think you can give pointers to the dog whisperer, you've had so many great successes. |
