so i guess people think i'm a fun loving, active drama queen that loves people? i'd love to hear how do people view you based soley on the breed or breeds you have? |

Its kinda hard to say what other people think of sheepdog owners, since we become all but INVISIBLE next to our ridiculously charismatic dogs What I think sheepies say about the people who own them is: affectionate (must want tons of cuddles), humorous (a sense of humor is absolutely required), patient ( ) , and hardworking (ie: brushing! ) |
Laurel you nailed it~~~ A perfect discription of a Sheepdog owner...and, of course, I am ALL that!!!!! |

My non-OES performance friends mostly think this, I'm sure. Flamboyant and funny may also come to mind, I suppose. Kristine |
ooh when we mix the pom with the boxers people think the pom is mine and the boxers are alans even tho he never owned a dog before we got together, i had my boxer before i knew him. bonkers is another thing people think of boxer owners if they've known a boxer. |
I would have to agree with all of you! Cindy |
Humorous,patience,fun loving,along with better you than me...LOL! Robin |
Since childhood I've lived with the following: 5 sheepdogs, 1 BlueHeeler/Lab, 1 Chihauhau, 1 Samoyed/Lab, 1 Beagle/Lab/? , Collie, 1 German Shephard, and a Pitbull. Whew! * I currently live with Merlin, Panda, Gilligan (the sheepies) and Snoop , the Pitbull. The others have all gone to the bridge. The Sheepdogs, no question attract the most attention, they are always the show stoppers. People view the person tagging along as friendly I suppose, but their attention is definately with the dog(s). People always want to take pics or pet them. That is unless I have Snoop walking with us (sometimes take 2 dogs at 1 time for walks). Then it changes. People avoid us or cross the street and no one ever asked to pet my dogs. The Pitbull is by far the dog that has been the most challenge - I belong to Hugabull which promotes responsible pet ownership, has a forum much like this one, and we meet on Sundays for group walks. The dog is a challenge to own not due to his behavior and I heard you have to have a suit of armor to own one. I only recieved negative comments when out walking with him (as does everyone on the Hugabull forum). The group tries to put well behaved social dogs in the public eye and they are used as Goodwill Ambassadors for their breed. I've never had so many people swear at me and give me disgusting looks when out walking alone with him as do the other people on that forum...I feel really sad sometimes. I have an old man who yells at me while standing in my driveway on a regular basis with his unleashed dog. Snoop and my boys are in their fenced yard with the bunnies but he only yells about my visicious Pitbull. Due to his breed and perceptions I've had to be extra cautious with him. None of the dogs are ever outside unless I'm there, Snoop has gone for training twice with Inmates at a prison, been enrolled in Pit Ed Classes, obedience, and is booked for his CGN in aprox 3 wks. The majority of the dogs at Hugabull have all done the same thing as we are very aware that 1 negative episode will set back peoples perceptions of the breed. We curse the cruel people who used the dogs loyalty to man for horrible purposes. Raised in a loving environment they can be like Spunky like on Our Gang or my boy, Snoop. The Hugabull forum is much like this one exept different breed of dogs.No gansta wannabees, no tough guys...just regular folks, families, people with their kids and other dogs join the walks out in the public. Didn't mean to hijack the post but I feel really sensitive but THEN ....SOMETHING HAS CHANGED RECENTLY!!!!! I bought Snoop a coat..(looks like a service dog coat) and I wear my best coat> (With the othes I wear dog walking coats.) I make sure I look presentable to dispell any negative image when Snoop and I go out walking. The strangest things have started happening!!! Practising for his CGN , Snoop sits down at all the crosswalks, remains in sit or down position while people/dog/ bikes/ cars / ect go by until I give the okay to go. We have started walking further and further each day and make sure we hit busy intersections. Traffic almost stops! Not because they think awww cute dog..no they see a well dressed petite person with a Pitbull in a service coat who is sitting patiently at the crosswalk with even little dogs walking past him. I can almost hear them saying, "OMG isn't that a Pitty? Cars forget to move as all eyes have been on him and I suppose they wait to see if anything is going to happen. They are even more shocked when they see his tail wagging constantly. However, he lives with dogs, bunnies, cats and his favorites - the guinea pigs. People have started yelling out their car windows..Nice dog! Pedestrians have asked if they can pet him . Practising his CGN I make sure he's sitting down to greet people. Just a few days ago , a little old lady (well older than me anyway ) asked to pet him and my heart jumped with joy. Sooooo after my long ramble..what has changed is two nice coats! One for him and one for me...and people are started to view us differently! We are going to walk in a Parade in Aug along with other Hugabull dogs who get dressed up for the occasion. They dress up as bunnies, ballerinas, clowns , and their people just wear normal clothes. Marianne |
not at all it's what i asked, kinda, i think it's more what people think about the breed than the owner tho. i have to say, oh my god what a bunch of a**e hats. you can't hurl abuse at people on the streets i don't care what the excuse is. if someone is scared of a particular breed or all dogs in general just stay clear, you don't need to be rude or give filthy looks, if someone did that to me and my dogs they'd be more likey to get a swift backhand from me than a reaction from my dog. there are certain breeds i'm wary of but i would never dream of being rude. these people are being agressive not the dog. good for you getting out there, and go fancy new coats |
Thanks Ema and it's a good topic you posted! Our group just discussed this recently and most of us are of the consensus that swearing back or appearing to be tough only gives people the perception of what kind of people get these dogs. So as tempting as it is - we choose to ignore or educate by the dogs actions. Oh sigh! The group also encourages Pit bull owners never to purchase a collar with spikes or anything that can be viewed as tough. Some found something as simple as a cute coat or collar make a difference as I found in my case. On another note - that awesome new coat I spoke of..ohhh I got it at Mark's and Spencers..a lovely British coat! I had a really strict weekly budget I was going to stick to.( I was in London during spring break) and I spent the entire thing on that coat and didn't buy anything else. I couldn't wear it around "Dirty Paws Merln" and when I'm out with Gilligan, Merlin and Panda everyone looks at their coats. |
We need a picture and I think it's great that you and Snoop are getting much better reactions. It's not the dog that's the problem it's the wrong people that have them. |
awesome marks and sparks coat making things a bit easier. i got married in a M&S suit, no one looked at the suit they looked at my hair lol. |
I'm not sure my dog says anything about me. I didn't pick him nor did I even want a dog at the time. My ex wanted an Airedale and so we got an Airedale. And then she wanted a sheepdog and so we got a sheepdog. |
One look at the dogs and they say, people are slobs. Yep! Glacier has never allowed anyone to brush her, I get a few swipes before she move away. So nice out, mess underneath. Having a bald spot on her back, who knows. Sheepdogs shaved down, those people aren't into maintenance.......ya think? Harry......now there's a handsome well groomed dog, owners must appreciate class. LOL! |
hehe, a well trained man, always good to see so what do people assume they know about you just by looking at your dogs? |
Ema wrote: so what do people assume they know about you just by looking at your dogs? That we must be wealthy: nope...our dogs are rescues and/or retired show dogs, and we do our own grooming. That we must know some super-secret way of training dogs, to get ours so mellow and well behaved: No...just basic obedience, a calm stable household and the sheepdog "work ethic" . That we must WANT tons of attention, our pictures taken, and to be mobbed with questions : sure, its kind of fun at times...other times we're just trying desperately to make it to the dog-potty area! ps...my list (and my slight snarky-ness )is heavily influenced by the fact that my dogs and I are "in public" a LOT during the summer art-fair season |
When I have my dogs in their long coat...Panda aka Pigpen loves the mud and dirt..sigh..so they probably think I'm a slob too. Then amazingly when he has his short clip he reminds me of a Fru Fru type dog for some reason. Merlin gives the impression of being such a clown...and view me that way..LOL Gilligan gives the impression of a gentle old soul...they always stop to talk to me when I'm out with him but we only can walk to the end of the block on our walks, so it's always my neighbors. |
