Sheepdogs are rather heavy boned so don't do well as jogging companions, but they are good as walkers. Puppies poop out quickly. You may have to carry the bundle home initially if you over do it. Of course with babies you dont want to push them too much while the body is growing. Initially 30 minutes will probably be your limit...or less. Gradually work up to an hour until puppy is adult .... 18 months...then you have yourself a trail dog. Maudie was my trail dog.......she could go all day! Loved bridges over creeks, fascinated by the water, but (unlike MO) would stay dry. Yes, pups can be trained to exercise equipment, but it is as boring for them as it is for you. They need to get out and sniff.......that's how a dog relates to life....thru the nose. If you were looking for a jogging companion, this wasn't it. Dalmation would have been a better choice. |
nah i jog on the treadmill where people can't see me, never outside tho. i love a good walk with my dogs, the treadmill is just in case of emergencies, say i break my leg he can still have a walk. also if my mum ever has to babysit, (she did recently when we had to go to scotland for a funeral) she isn't able to walk due to illness but he could at least poddle on the treadmill. i have a dodgey knee cap too it floats and sometimes floats too far so i can't walk on it for a few days. best to be safe than sorry. glad i asked now i had been told 20mins 3 times a day for a pup, i don't want to damage my baby. |
20 minutes 3 times per day would be fine. I think the key is not too long at one time, but you do want to tire them out so they take plenty of naps We walked Izzie at least 3 times per day probably 20 - 30 minutes each time. The walks were hardly all walking...lots of stopping and sniffing...her jumping around and exploring the neighborhood. Many more times going out for potty breaks, of course. |
i'm sure the three dogs we have at the moment will help tire them out, plus it would seem my youngest boxers lips are great to teethe on lol. grr i wish time would pass quicker so we could meet our new baby. we'll probably go around the block a few times and visit the park once a day in the car to start off with i don't fancy carrying him/her the whole way lol. |
Zeke doesn't know how to pace himself. He pulls & pulls (I was never able to stop him from pulling) for the first 20-30 minutes and wears himself out. By the 40-45 minute mark, he would slow down considerably. I often thought I was going to have to carry him the rest of the way home. |
Our Bailee in almost 3 years young now and I have walked him since we got him at 8 weeks of age. I know some folks on the Forum say not to walk them too much but Bailee and I started out our walking at about 3/4 of a mile 3 times a day since he arrived. We walk everyday, rain, hail, snow or shine. We walk about 4 miles a day now and he has never shown any signs of any problems. He is strong, healthy and lean. He weighes about 78 pounds and runs very well and so far has not had any signs of hip issues. He is not quite as happy to walk in the heat though. I walk him very early before it gets too hot in the Summer months and take along a water bottle and bowl for an occasional drink. If you decide to walk a great deal start it out on shorter distances and work up to the longer ones. Our Trainer suggested I walk him in all types of situations, lots of people, busy streets, other dogs, traffic, parking lots etc. Nothing startles him, he is accustomed to autos and even when the trash trucks drive by and stop to make their pick ups (which can be rather noisey) it does not bother him. |
Mady was a terrible walker at first. Of course, it was January in Canada, so cold, ice, salt. For the first little while, she acted like she hated walking, be lagging behind and complaining until we turned towards home and she'd be pulling to head home. Then she discovered the dog park. She became VERY excited about walks after that. |
