Dump time

Anyone who has done rescue is familiar with "dump time." It's when school is out and suddenly the dog is a burden to summer plans. So of course the answer is, "dump it." The lucky ones end up in shelters and hopefully quickly to rescue. Far too many end up being taken to open land and turned loose. Victoria in AZ would talk about all the dogs in the desert just after school ended.....no doubt succumbing to coyotes, cars or desert death.

I met a lady in AZ who well know about the "dump" as most of the dogs she rescued she had found in the desert, nearly dead. Not all survive, dehydration kills the kidneys even if they do get help seemingly in time. At the time she had several wolf dogs in rescue in addition to the others.

This school's out policy might explain why we're seeing these pups Dogs in Trouble forum right now. Yes economy too........it's all so sad.

It sure does seem like rescue is getting even busier!
I always say I don't know how people that do all breed can do it :phew:

Since the spring it sounds like everyone has been constantly full!

It's always busy for all breed. There is never a day that we don't get 100 emails about 100 dogs that are going to be euthanized that day. You need to develop a thick skin and the ability to say no.. which is heartbreaking.
I do help with other shaggy rescue groups and terriers so, I know how hard it is to say no but, you simply can't save them all!
Hi,

I sometimes can't get around the unfairness of it all. Some dogs get a beautiful life while others have no so good ones with horrible owners who dumped them. It's the same for some children too.

With the animals:

Some are lucky to have someone advocate for them and as a result they are saved. An example of this recently was of that old dog who I saw at the SPCA recently. I posted his photo on the Hugabull site - it pulled at heartstrings as his photo showed him crying. 1200 people saw that photo and as a result he was pulled and went into foster care. Just last week I found out he was later adopted and his new mom and dad spent 1,000 on vet bills, toys and a new dog bed for him. For an old guy that lived most of his life on a chain - this brings happiness to all those involved in his finding a forever home.
But i sometimes drive myself crazy. I am happy Red got a home but am wracked with guilt over the others that were in the shelter at the same time. I didn't take a photo of them..they didn't have a person who advocated for them. Same goes for the cats whom I say No to when the shelter calls me and they need foster care. Once I changed my mind and called back the next day and said, Okay, I'll take him - only to find the cat was euthanized as it was ailing and wouldn't be able to recover in a shelter environment. I cried. It hurts so bad sometimes I have to give myself pep talks...it's not my fault they are there and I'm doing the best that I can..but it still hurts. Even if I offered to take them all...more would be incoming. We can't save them all. We know that logically but sometimes emotionally it's hard. It's like the starfish story...we can't save them all ..but to the ones we do..it makes a huge difference to them.
I think of how lucky Panda was, but try not to think of all the others that were left behind.

I have 27 of those little souls who reside at my home..the dumped bunnies, the cruelty seizure of Chico the guinea pig, the senior cats and of course 3 of my 4 boys. While I would love to take in more - we (you guys too) must be responsible to the ones currently under our care. Lets take solace and focus on the ones saved, that doing what we do - does make a difference ...just like the starfish story.
I found this and thought I'd share.

Beautiful video Marianne .Had me crying

That's the one thing in my life that i miss at the moment, doing rescue, but that's out of my control :( .

Although i still do my part in other ways :)
