Website design software

Ok to my fellow geeks....

I'm thinking about purchasing new web design software and I'd like to know which are your faves and why.

I've used frontpage and dreamweaver, wasn't crazy about either, and fusion net objects which I really did like but I feel it's fallen behind the times and hasn't evolved with the needs of the average site.

I'm capable of editing and writing code, but I just don't want to have to. I don't have time anymore to sit at my pc all night playing with sites LOL
I want easy, relaible, and browser friendly.

It's true. If it's nothing but a simple, explanatory website and doesn't have any functions like e-commerce or stuff like that, iWeb is embarrassingly easy and fast. You just have to work a little harder to break out of their templates so it doesn't scream that you made it in iWeb. The problem is the coding is enormous and there aren't common assets-- everything is new on every page and has to be edited as such. Forget CSS, lol.
Being in the IT industry and a web geek , I've used the above mentioned as well as Expressions Web from Microsoft, (the Front Page replacement). When I first go started, there were no programs and we learned to write HTML in notepad. I still do it that way. On my own site, (see link in my signature), I created the basic outline in Dreamweaver 8. I do updates in notepad. Where I work, I was asked to get their site back up and also did the basic layout in a program, (Expressions Web) and again, do changes in notepad. See it here http://www.greentokai.com

You can download free templates and this makes life a lot easier to get started. Many are free and only require you to leave a line to credit the source. Once the site is up, you can make changes in a program or notepad. Either way, I love working in html. If you need any help, PM me.

As for a favorite, I really don't have a fav program. I do prefer to set up the basics and then work in notepad. I've worked in Dreamweaver most but Expressions Web is WAAAAAYY less pricey. I gotta think there is an open source program out there but never have looked. I'll look into it now though, I'm curious...

Well I decided to give iweb a try, and went with the registered trial, which you can't access until they email you.... still waiting for that email. It's been about an hour, so I did it again, still nothing. It now says the username is taken, but still no email with pw. I clicked on a support chat, which opened, then said no one is available try again later. Needless to say so far I'm not impressed LOL
Im not sure if it counts as web software, but my site is based on a free template system for blogging: Wordpress.

Its easy, easy easy and does everything I need my fairly simple site to do :D

The other board I hit everyday is based on Wordpress and the guy who runs that board LOVES Wordpress. Everything I've read about it says its the way to go. I'm too set in my ways, otherwise I'd go with it.

The big priority for me was ease of loading pictures and quickly changing and updating content. Wordpress is great for that. I love the fact that I now have a website that I can manage entirely by myself without having to call the designer in to change things or fix problems...or worse yet, ask my techie husband for help!

and honestly, that should be the big priority for anyone, whether it be personal or corporate. Who wants to fight with a simple update.

I also have a blogger.com blog that I like a lot, but I don't want to give up the control that I have over my own site on my own server.
