I hope that this forum did not somehow convince you that boys were better or more enjoyable to have than girls-I would find that sad. I have a girl, but know some boy sheepies as well and I find both the boys AND the girls to be delightful, playful, snuggly, smart, and sweet. |
we got the impression girls are sometimes brighter than boys, we have boxers so that just wouldn't do . we're definitely open to either, our future pup's mum is teeny tiny, i think we both like the idea of a slightly bigger dog but we'll see, we're hoping one of them pretty much says hey mum and dad where have you been. My mum actually chose my first boxer, i was hundereds of miles away at the time but i knew islay was my pup before i even met her in person, and wicket, well i had to choose her because she had the white stripe and matched the boxers lol. you just get a feeling from them so girl, boy it doesn't matter as long as it feels right. |
With both Zoey and Caitlyn, we wanted something British. When we picked out Zoey's name, it was the only one on the short list from the first Google search that we both liked with no hesitation. With Caitlyn, we did a more extensive search with the same British lean only this time, we wanted something that started with a C and we could shorten if possible. Caitlyn was again the first name on the list that struck our collective fancy. Well, after Chloe. We both liked Chloe but thought trying to train a Chloe and retrain a Zoey might be confusing for all involved; so we went with Caitlyn, AKA Caty. Just be smart. Pick something that means something to both of you and not something that either one will be afraid to yell in public if you need to. And I always say not to be trendy with names; it makes you look like you have no originality or imagination. Vance |
that's the thing we're not trendy at all lol so we don't want a funky name we want something traditional really but with a meaning. Domino was named after her mother islay, (pronounced isla or i la not is lay as the vet nurse always says ) is a scotish island that my hubby use to go to as a kid and wicket was after an ewok lol again my hubby loved loved loved star wars as a kid and she has that cute teddy face. we both like greek mythology and my hubby is interested in norse gods (think that's spelled right). but most of all it's important it's something the poor pup can understand and learn. |
We named our Airedale Brick because an Airedale's head looks like a brick when they are in show trim. Believe me, I thought it was the dumbest name when my ex suggested it, but she really wanted that name. Looking back, it was the best name for him. He is stubborn, tenacious, thick-headed, and built like the proverbial brick ****house. |
lol i would never have guessed a woman suggested brick, my husband has actually suggested Zeke after a band he likes. i kinda like willow for a girl after the kids film i know it's not deep and profound blah blah blah but we both loved that film as kids it has good feeling attached to it. |

If you want to stay with the "Willow" theme, how about Mardigan? It can be shortened to "Mardi" (or Marty, if you prefer), and when he does something goofy, "Mad Mardigan" will roll off your tongue. (Yes, I'm a Willow fan, too! "Help! There's a peck with an acorn pointed at me!" ) Good luck! |
We chose Mady because David wanted to name her after a favourite West African singer. I was scared of what name he might choose, as some of the names of singers we like are loooong. Never having had a sheepie before, we didn't realize that our Mady could easily become matted up, so now I feel a bit silly about her name. It does come off the tongue easily when I need to get her attention, though. Now, having said that, it might be fun to have a longer name. I am reminded of young Harry and his two-legged mum Judi. When she wants his attention, she calls him Harry. If he is not listening, I swear I heard her say 'Harriston!!!' or something to that effect. So it might be fun having a longer name like Mardigan that you can use when you really mean business! Not that your puppy will ever give you cause to be stern, of course! Whatever sex and name you choose, I can't wait for the pictures!! |
I have a Star Wars (all things sci fi actually - just me and daughter Lisa aren't) family, so Chewie was a natural choice. Especially knowing his dad's registered name is Shaggy Bear's Skywalker and his call name is Luke... I looked up the definition of Chewie when we were considering it - and it says "hairy loyal warrior", so it was a match for me too! And the call name doesn't need to even be part of the registered name either. So you can be as creative as you like. And as mentioned - do some "test" calls of the name - make sure it's something you are comfortable calling out in public. I have a further concern for my dogs' names - it has to flow out of my mouth and project well, as we do all these crazy sports. |
Lily's name has ALOT of meaning. My first dog Endo had just died and my step mom came over and brought me lilies to plant in my garden for her, so I would always have a beatiful reminder of her. A little while later she called and asked me if I was missing having a girl and if I would want anouther dog. It took me a little while to answer but it was yes, of course I miss having anouther girl in the house. She gave me my OES pup and when she asked me what I was going to name her, since my step mom gave her to me I couldn't think of any other name but Lily. So no matter what I will always have a Lily for my Endo. |
We have Heart But her 'other' name is Jelly~~ I really like Jelly~~it's fun, sweet, happy!!!!! BUT... If you want to make a special 'someone' on this site...VERY...very happy...then RON~~~ name your puppy RON~~~~~~~ |
hehe, i also quite like Loki but that might make him/ her sound too naughty |
Not at all. I have a friend who's black Lab is named Loki. Besides, ask for a show of paws from who is here who isn't a bit naughty from time to time. You'll see very few paws being raised. Vance |
My previous sheepie was named Max and he passed away. So..............four weeks later I got a puppy and named him Jake.......It means to take someone's place! |
My newest Old English Sheepdog is named Bella and her name means beautiful, because she is a beauty, inside and out. Robin |
Our much missed furry monster was called Celyn (pronounced Kellin) she was born at Christmas and Celyn is welsh for holly so seemed to suit her. We are on a puppy hunt at the mo and have no idea what the new one will be called We lost her 31st May this year and the time is right now for a new sheepy baby xx |
Love your girl's name and I'm so sorry about her loss. Wishing you a puppy to love soon. Kristine |
I prefer people names so if someone first hears me they assume I'm calling to a person. That might be handy someday. Carrying that thought, I'd probably name a Mastiff "Tiny" and a Chihuahua "Bubba." I have to get a chuckle out of the name personally. I still kick myself for not naming Harry...Larry and Jack should have been Joe. Then I'd have Mo, Larry and curly Joe. (maybe better squirrly Joe). I've already gone thru the names: Stellaaaaaa, (hey) Abbottttt and (come back) Shane. Jack became Jack because he didn't know.....jack. Harry was named by a little girl who wanted to adopt him but her mother wouldn't allow it, so I allowed her to name the dog. MO is short for her adoption card name Simone....that has never really fit her, but I couldn't come up with anything better at the time. |

I'm runnng girl dog names through my head these days. I have to avoid common ones because you don't want to be running agility with a dog named something 5 other dogs are named since they call your dog's name to get you lined up to run. A fellow competitor, also in the 20" jump height, has a Giant Schnauzer named Macy. It never fails, every time they call her name, I jump. Even if I'm waiting to run Sybil. There was also an Aussie Belle and a BC Belle back when I was running Belle. And there were the occasional Maddie's back when I was running her. I like to use people names too, but it has to be off the radar. And yet somehow significant. Oddly enough I have never encountered another Sybil, so she was well named in this regard. Kristine |
We just lost our 12 year old. His name was Pooh Bear. Called him "Pooh" and sometimes "Bear" |
I also like your dogs name,Celyn. Definitely different and very pretty, the meaning too. So very sorry for your loss and wishing you good thoughts in your search of a new puppy. Robin |

She's actually from Australia, and just returned back there for her job.....so an Aussie talking Simone who runs agility Lots of Belles and Bella's around here too. Haven't run into another Chewie though |
Google up a list of Greek myth female names, LOL! I guarantee you won't hear Clytemnestra elsewhere.....tho it does sound like a veneral disease. And there are pronouceable names: Leda Mida Nissa Phoebe Maia Maybe go to a baby name list and look for names you'd never name a child. Fannie? Pansy? Chances are if you find it a low choice name, you probably won't be running into many of them either as dogs or people. |
Funny story about name choices. As most of you know I have an Aussie named Asia. Last November my son and his wife had a beautiful baby girl, whom they named Alyssa Renee. About once a week or so, since they live in Michigan and I live in Florida, we skype so we can see each other while we chat. Now that Alyssa is getting older, when I say her name she will look right at the computer screen, well Alyssa sounds a lot like Asia, so Asia always thinks I'm calling her/or talking to her, so she stays right at my feet the whole time. So confusing for poor Asia. lol Even though Asia has had her name for 4 yrs we, in our family, do have a tendancy to likeing names that begin with A: Amy, Adam, Aaron, Asia, Alyssa, Ashley and my stepson and grandson's middle names are Aaron. Good luck picking out your pups name. |
