Hi notice your in the UK and there through the BVA scheme for hips is both sides graded/measured then scored and that is added up to a combined score. So with the breed average being combined 20 for the UK, 9 combined is low and a good score for hips for the breed. Here in Australia we grade the same way as the BVA, our breed average at the moment is combined 17 Now when researching for a puppy you want the hip scores for not only the mum (dam) but the dad too (Sire) a breeder should have both those available for you to see. |
cool, 9 was just the highest score we'd encountered when we've been looking so although it was lower than average it was higher than what we've been seeing so we wanted to double check. i think we're just looking for something to be wrong as we've had nothing but bad luck so far. aah well fingers crossed all goes well, feeling far better about the score thou |
Just another bit of advice also, you want to see Eye certs/Clearances as well on both the dam and sire of a potential puppy as well. In the UK they do and should have those as well on both the sire and dam of a litter. Along with the Hip Certs. |
Lisa there is still alot of show breeders in the uk that don't eye check. Hopefully this will change (sooner the better) . Hopefully ,in time, we will catch up with the rest of the world in doing even more tests .Even make the tests law . That way we might get rid of some unwanted breeders |
Wow Julianne that really surprises me Having over the years a lot of imported dogs from the UK in my lines brought in by breeders over the years I have been involved with, from years gone by all came here with eye clearances before being imported into Australia, plus a history too of dam and sire and grandparents and gr grand parents etc on those the eye certs and a few generations of hip scores as well, too young at the time for a youngster when they arrived to have had hips done but later on here tested at the appropriate age and the same system as the BVA screening for hips, preliminary eye certs came as well for the several month old imports as well as the parents eye certs and hip info . Still worth mentioning for ema if she can also along with the hips certs a breeder eye testing & having those clearances on the dam and sire of a potential pupper to clarify and rule out potential future problems that should be just as important as the hip certs. Most good breeders in the UK do eye test there stock. Those that dont well shame on them. PRA & juvenile cataracts was rife in the breed many years ago over there and eye testing over there became the norm for good breeders. I know like here neither of the tests are compulsory prior to breeding but breeders that have there hearts in the right place do at least those two basic health tests on dam and sire before producing a litter. So if ema can look at a breeder who not only has the hip certs for sire and dam the eye clearance certs on both as well would be a better option to go with. |
I agree Lisa I think the Breeders that are doing a lot of European Showing ,exporting stock are the ones that are doing a lot of eye testing. I was going to get Kenley done at crufts but my little lad wasn't well and we didn't manage it . |
