My puppy's not very cuddly...is this normal?

Hi everyone!

I'm new to the forum, and let me just say, it is SO GREAT to hear what everyone has to say about their OES experiences! I'm a new OES mommy - my little boy's name is Alfie - and I've had him for about 1 week. We're getting along pretty well so far, but he just doesn't seem very affectionate towards me! When I try to cuddle with him, he gets up and moves 5 feet away and then lays down. He won't even come up on the couch with me! I've never met a dog who doesn't want to be on the couch. Is this normal? He just seems rather distant...

I wouldn't worry about that. He's still going thru a big adjustment. My last OES never got on the couch with me. He was content to lay by the couch on the floor next to me.

Takes time.

MO isn't real cuddly with me, will snuggle with DH's legs in bed but otherwise she wants her space, just hand touches, please. I've had plenty of cuddlers, so this standoff nature is........different. Jack is just the opposite, he will lay on you.
Thanks! That makes me feel a bit better. I guess it's better than having a very dependent dog that can't handle being away from me for a second. But it still makes me a little sad that I can't really cuddle with my dog. I guess it has only been a week, but I was hoping we'd be a bit better "bonded" by now. He's been fantastic in ever other way, though, a real rockstar! He sleeps through the night in his crate, he pees within 30 secs of being taken outside and has not had accidents in his crate at all! He's also learned sit, lay down and leave it in one week! I guess I should count my blessings :) I wish I knew how to post pics of my little boy! I love him to death :hearts:
Our Mady is 19 months old now and I find she just gets cuddlier and cuddlier with each passing month. Remember that there is alot to explore for your puppy right now, too, so that might take priority.
Yes, Mady is incredibly more cuddly now than she was as a little puppy. She wasn't really cuddly at all to be honest. Now she's all cuddles. :hearts:
My Mad is not very cuddly. She's all business. Also the most high drive dog I've ever met. She just wants to work. Every so often she deigns to be cuddly. Till she deigns not to. Then she walks off   It's just who she is.

Gorgeous puppy, by the way.

My 2 year old Frankie isn't cuddly at all. He never has been. If I lay on the floor next to him he actually gets up and moves to another place.
Our 6 year old Mattie is a cuddle bunny. Loves you to touch her all of the time and she actually will lean up against you and try to lay one you.

Maybe It's the difference between male and female. Not really sure.

My beautiful TOBY was never a cuddly boy. All of the hugs and kisses were on TOBY's terms. I would not worry about this at all and in time this behavor may change anyway.
Chewie loves to cuddle, snuggle...but his issue is getting too warm. He is always warm.
He has never snuggled long or gotten on the furniture for more than about a minute. No dog beds, no pads in crates, no rugs on floors. Avoids carpeted rooms...just too WARM!
But - he is my velcro boy and never has me out of sight and even when he looks like he's snoozing I swear he is still keeping an eye on me, as I can't even tiptoe away w/o him!
I thought the same as you when Howie was 2-6 months old, he never cuddled or sat still long enough to pet. Then one morning everything changed, and now I never have an empty lap!

Hope you are having fun with your little one,
peg
i'm remembering being asleep in my lazyboy with elbow on arm of chair supporting my chin till a very large fluffball knocks my elbow off the chair arm. then proceeds to place his large head on my lap and chest for petting, then the quick turnabout. here's my bum for scratching, thank u very much. 8) :wag:

alf's just very busy right now with his new job.
Check you PMs.

Neither Quincy or Oscar were cuddly as puppies, usually because there was something infinitely more interesting to be exploring than my lap. :D Both got more affectionate as they got older, Oscar more so than Quincy.

I found that being the source of very good treats helps with the whole "cuddly" thing. :D Oscar is so incredibly food motivated that he would try to crawl into my skin for a treat if he could.

I echo the issue with temp. Oscar runs hot, hot, hot, so he just can't touch me for more than a few minutes before he has to move to the cool tile, or the granite fireplace hearth to cool off.

Welcome, and congrats on your very cute boy!

I got Jake when he was 7 weeks old and the first few weeks he wasn't cuddly either. He would go and lay on top of the a/c vent instead of being held, kind of like he was pouting. I think he was just missing his mama and siblings. After a few weeks of adjusting to his new home he got very affectionate.

Just give Alfie some time and he'll come around too. He is adorable!
Ha, and at sheepiepalooza, Jake was demanding cuddles!! I was happy to give them! :hearts:
I am also a new member on this forum and a first time oes mommy. My Millie is now nine months old and is just now starting to cuddle, but only at night on my bed before I go to sleep. Then she moves to my bathroom where she sleeps in the tub.

My trainer says its better to have an independent dog than one with separation anxiety. :yay:

Enjoy your confident baby
Carol, I love that avitar!! What a cutie.

What I have found when it comes to OES pups is they tend to be a little more standoffish until their herding instincts kick in, then they will need to be by you all the time. Not necessarily cuddling with you but definitely by you. Give your cute little guy some time. I bet he will come around!! We have a landing that overlooks out family room. when my daughter goes to bed (her room is just off the landing and I can see the top of her door from the family room couch). My sheepies head upstairs with her. They sit outside her door and stare down and my husband and I as we are watching TV. They are keeping an eye on their herd. We've had cocktail parties with 70+ people who are all over the main level. Our sheepies will walk up to the guests and kind of lean on them until the take a few steps in the right direction. Before you realize what they are doing they have moved everyone to one end of the house where they can keep an eye on everybody. It is really funny to watch.

FYI don't take Sheepies to your kids soccer games. It stresses them out because they want to herd everyone. Or at leasts that has been our experience.
When that cute little pup is full grown and 90 pounds, you may welcome the fact that he is not pushing you off the couch!

New pup is probably still getting his bearings in his new home and learning to trust you. I wouldn't worry...
I just figured out why Alfie is acting as you describe.

He looked on the OES.org site and found that you have failed to post photos of him. Dogs can be very finicky this way. I'd suggest you get some photos posted quick.

My Bella doesn't let me out of her sight, but she only cuddles when we are going to sleep, as if it's a good night ritual and then off to a cold floor. She gets too hot and needs the coldness of the wood or tiled floors.
I would not get my feelings hurt as you can see from others post it is normal.

Winnie was NOT at all cuddly when she was a puppy. Way too independent and wanted to show me who was boss 8O She's now almost 3 years old and is now VERY cuddly! She, too, is not fond of being on furniture, especially in the summer - it's too hot for her and she prefers lying on the a/c vents.....
My Maltese/shih Tzu is just like this! He's fine if I don't touch him. If I touch him he moves to the foot of the bed. :( I am very huggie so I'm kinda sad and I had a 15 year old teenie hateful poodle that made me massage her head, legs
and back for hours! :) (or else) so I keep looking to adopt or foster. Idk? Would a young dog make the older dog happier? I figured a female bc they tend to be bossy and could maybe motivate the old fart? He is fine with the bossy ladies. He defers to their discretion. Ha ha. Is it b/c I am the one that has to groom him? He really hates that, so do I. Cutting his nails, he has allergies....I have to feed him certain food and bathe him with special shampoo. If I had a lot of $ I would pay others to do it twice per month. Also, My groomer will not pull out Andy's ear hair. Left to me. I think I figured out why my dog hates me. I am the asshole. I might be trying to make him happy overall but his contact with me is always uncomfortable. Damn. :headbang:
Can complain much about my one. He loves being cuddle, sometimes he comes with us to the sofa and belly up to be rub, he likes it so much that he fell a couple of time of the sofa while trying to roll on his back.

But like most, mine too don't stay longer beside us in thensofa or bed, it's too hot. During the day he likes to sleep in the balcony and at night he goes sleep in the kitchen where is marble floor.

Oh and I almost forgot my "attack" us in the morning with kisses. We doesn't comes to wake us up if we are asleep bit after 7am if he senses we are moving and waking up he jups on the bed and just want to lick our faces.
Cloud is cuddly but only when he wants to be cuddly. Normally that is when I am doing things that mean I don't have a hand free. We love him to pieces but as with most sheepies he does what you want him too when he is good and ready :-)
