1 cup wheatgerm 1 cup peanut butter 1 egg 1/4 vegtable oil 1/2 cup water 1/2 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350. Combine flour, wheatgerm and salt in a large bowl, then mix in peanut butter, egg, oil and water. Roll dough out in lightly floured surface to 1/2" thickness. Cut out using desired cutter or cut into squares. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and 15-30 minutes depending on size. Store in refrigerator. I add flaxseed and replace some of the oil with flaxseed oil. Sometimes I add crumbled bacon or use crunchy peanut butter. Natural peanut butter does not work as well as regular. |

Thanks for the recipe. Do thses treats get hard or are they crumbly? |
It depends on the thickness and how long you bake them. If you want them harder try baking them like you would biscotti, use a lower temp and bake longer. If you bake them just until done they stay softer. When I'm feeling really lazy I just roll them into small balls and bake. |
THANKS!! I am going to try them. Tasker has terrible food allergies and I have to be careful what he eats. He might be able to tolerate something like this that has no additives, I know he can have peanutbutter. |
Can he have cheese? I have another easy recipe with ham and cheese I could give you. |
I have never tried cheese so am not sure. I'll try these and see how we make out. I suspect he can eat more now than when he was younger, we just had so many problems when he was young that I keep a pretty strict diet for him. THANKS!!!! |
Looks yummy.
Local lady makes treats and sells in pet botiques. Unfortunately they are too good for the dogs........we purchase and eat the peanutbutter ones. Also.......none of my dogs likes peanutbutter! Good! More for us. I make a liver biscotti for the dogs........I hate liver.......so the dogs know its ALL for them. |
My guys LOVE liver, it makes me gag Perhaps you could be persuaded to share the recipe? |
We put the recipe in the SWOES Rescue cookbook. If you want a copy contact Victoria as http://www.swrescue.net There are several doggie treat recipes plus many human recipes.
Liver biscotti: 1 lb. beef or chicken liver 1 cup corn meal 1 cup whole wheat flour 1 clove garlic pressed or 1/2 tsp. garlic powder (any healthy additions like flax seed oil you wish to add) In food processor, puree the liver and garlic until smooth (hold your breath if you hate liver like me). Add corn meal and flour to make a stiff dough. Depending on the liver moisture (and any additions), I often add additional flour to make a firmer dough. If hand kneading, wet hands to keep the mush from sticking. Turn onto a very well sprayed cookie sheet (I keep forgetting to try the Release aluminium foil) and pat down to 1/2 inch thick. Bake 20 minutes at 350. Remove from oven and immediately cut into desired shapes return to oven, turning the biscotti on its side to increase surfaces exposed to heat. Lower oven temp to 300 and bake another 30-40 minutes. Store in refrigerator or freezer. |
Bestdogsx4,
Thank you for the peanut butter treat recipe ! Could you please share the ham and cheese treat recipe ? Our bobtail loves cheese!!! (Your avatar is just awesome ! Which sheepie is pictured??) |
Thanks! That's Luke, aka Pukey Lukey
HAM & SWISS ON RYE 2.25 cups rye flour 1 cup grated swiss 1 cup grated ham 1/3 ciup vegtable oil 1 egg 1/2 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350. Combine the flour, cheese, ham and salt in a bowl, then add egg and oil, mix throughly. Roll to 1/2" and cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 15-25 minutes, depending on size. Store in refrigerator. You can use any cheese, my guys like parmesan. You can also use any type of flour, use bacon instead of ham, etc. I usually use cheddar and then dust the tops with the parmesan before baking. |
Thanks Guest! My dogs will really love those Have you ever tried silpats or baking parchment? Both work great and you don't have to spray the pan. |
Thanks Bestdogsx4,
Bogart will be in heaven !!!! All his favorite flavors in one homemade treat !! Luke is a handsome sheepie, just a great photo !!! |
I wish Momo liked peanut butter! But I think I can try that other one... |
LIVER!! BLECH |
Well, I made the liver biscotti and my dogs LOVED it. My employees however, did not. I put them in a container and took them to work so I wouldn't forget to take them home. Someone found them and thought they were chocolate chip biscotti.....they left me a note saying they thought maybe the chocolate was bad and they were the worst thing I had ever baked |
You guys are crazy!!! Liver is awesome.....My boss and I have a "liver club", every few months we get together at his house and make liver and onions...(my husband wont let me cook it in our house..haha) I bring Panda the left overs and she's turned out to be a liver lover too
What about sushi???Will any of you eat that??? |
I regret to inform you that "liver clubs" in the state of Michigan are illegal and anyone belonging to one faces severe penalties. We consider the act of cooking and eating liver to be highly suspicious activity |
I'll have to try those with Jasper. I bought him some Frosty Paws the other day, and he LOOOOVES it! We take the boys walking every afternoon (Jasper too). We always stop by our convience store to get the boys a scoop of ice cream (can't beat 25 cents/scoop) on the way home from the walk. Well, I saw the Frosty Paws at the grocery store, so now, Jasper gets a yummy treat after our walks too.
I also make the boys kool-aid flavored ice cubes, and Jasper loves them too! He loves ice period though. |
I make the koolaid ice cubes but my guys aren't ever sure what to do with them They play kickball with them or watch them melt. |
I was looking online for frostypaws website, and I came across a recipe for it! I think making it yourself will be a lot cheaper - lol
Frosty Paws Dog Ice Cream Recipe 32 oz. plain yogurt 1 mashed banana 2 T peanut butter 2 T honey It’s true dairy products aren’t good for dogs, but yogurt contains much less lactase than regular milk and the live cultures are great for your dog’s digestive system. This dog ice cream recipe is delicious and good for your pet! 1. Mix all these ingredients in your blender, then dump into ice cube trays, paper cups, or even a kong toy to freeze and serve. 2. If you want to go all out for your mutt you can freeze these homemade frosty paws just like you would homemade ice cream. A salt-less automatic ice cream maker makes this as easy as using any other appliance in your home and the frosty paws will be ready to serve in 10 minutes. For the ultimate treat, appropriate for desert at a doggy birthday party, follow steps one and two, then take the mostly frozen dog ice cream product of number two and spread it 1” to 1½” thick on wax paper. Freeze for five minutes and thenremove dog ice cream from freezer. Next, use a paw shaped cookie cutter to cut a paw shaped “frosty paws”, remove ice cream around edges, and return paw shapes to the freezer to freeze solid. |
Thanks Gail! Luke and Beau's 8th birthday is in June, that would be perfect with SheepieBoss's cake. |
Ooh, Clyde will love those. Since he already loves plain ice cubes, I can only imagine what he'll think about these. I'm going to make them tomorrow! |
