Swimming

My sheepie is a year and a half old. Last week I thought it would be fun to teach her to swim with me in the pool. What was I thinking?! It took just a day for her to figure out the steps and boundaries of our pool. Another day to discover laying on a raft was even more fun than swimming and even though I thought I was teaching her to only swim when I'm in the pool, she has taught me she no longer needs my approval and refuses to get out! lol we have a doggy door where she can come and go as she pleases. She pleases to jump in the pool, run into the house and jump on our bed soak and wet! It's actually pretty funny but if anyone has a brilliant idea how I might teach her not to do that I would love to know. Yes, I have created a monster! lol

i had this with my daytona and the pond her daily swim and a daily towel dry ..this went on for 8 yrs hope you have alot of towels!!
ah, i'm tryin to think, but i can't til i stop lol. sorry. :wag:
I've tried with MO, but she wants her water moving, maybe a waterfall? The other night DH started the sprinklers and MO gave me the look, "WHY am in inside??" I let her out, 10 minutes later the wet soaking mess came in a wiped herself on all the upholstery before I could get to her. There are sheets on all the furniture..I learned long ago to keep everything protected.

Come summer you may have to waterproof your bed, LOL!
I close the bedroom doors before Tonks and Luna go swimming, and lay heavy blankets over the non-leather sofas. They mostly swim at the kennel now, but occasionally they get to go in the creek at the back of our property.

The lady at the kennel says they won't get out of the water; they'd stay in all day if they had their choice. When they need a break, they swim over to her and will rest in her arms until they are ready to swim some more.

Awwww! And they aren't even labradors! Sounds like me! I'd rather not get out of the water either. Tonks, Luna and I need a swim up bar in our pool for refreshments/kibble, walk out for out of pool necessaries and then back in. Floats for night time sleeping.
We let Dexter take his own slow, methodical approach to the pool. He walked around it for several weeks (fell in only twice), then gradually progressed to pawing the hot tub, a few days later his face went in (not heated). After we started swimming he advanced to the top step of the pool, then the second step. A few days ago he graduated to getting on the loveseat that puts him mid-body deep in the water.

He tried swimming once, panicked and didn't like it.

He knows it's pool time about an hour after Mom gets home and reminds us it's time to go get wet.

His favorite part is the two towel dry-off after.
I am new to the forum and trying to learn how to add a picture in a post. I tried a couple days ago and it failed. Here is attempt #2.

So cute!!! What a cutie and a water lover!

I still have problems uploading pics to this site..I know it's me..that is why you don't see many recent ones from me.
Beautiful dog and beautiful pool!! :D
That pup is SO adorable. :hearts: Just me being a worrywart but I'd feel really bad if something
happened and I didn't share these words of caution...

I heard of an OES that drowned in the swimming pool. Remember to latch doggy doors to prevent
access to the pool when dogs cannot be properly supervised and if they're kept in full coat, be extra
careful... it's an added danger because the weight of all that hair when when it's wet.

Ok... the party pooper is leaving... :sidestep:
We have waking nightmares about Dexter drowning so we will never have a doggie door. Even before he discovered the joys of the pool he proved to not be trustworthy, his pig and gopher bloodlines showed, so isn't allowed in the backyard alone.

He never gets in the pool unless one of us are in it but he can be in the hot tub faster than I can! He loves to poop then run to the hot tub as we are picking it up.

We're teaching him that he can only get in the water with our approval but................

Oh how adorable!!!! :hearts:
Well I couldn't stop laughing at your post. I've never had a swimming OES. Last summer we took our Lizzy to my brother's river house on the Potomac. It's a tidal river so there are little waves. They have a Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retriever that they can't keep out of the water. Lizzy was having nothing to do with the water. I went in with her from the shore line and made sure she didn't have trouble swimming. By the end of the weekend we were throwing her off the end of the dock, I know we were being mean....... she'd swim to the shore and go lay on the steps by the house. Wanting nothing to do with swimming.
Meant to say how adorable those pictures are. OES's are the CUTEST PUPPIES EVER!!!!
:aww: :aww: :aww:
Adorable puppy!!!

Aside from the pictures on the forum, I've never seen a water-loving sheepie swimmer in real life. It sounds like it'd be really fun.
I think Dexter is adorable! Such an goof
Dexter's daily routine is to walk laps in the hot tub while we water outdoor plants then when we get in the pool he moves to the pool with us and stays on the steps at about chest deep.

He got in our son's pool yesterday at a seat about shoulder deep, got enthused with the grandkids and stepped off the seat. My wife panicked and was about to jump in to save him. She turned him back to the seat and Dexter acted like nothing happened.
