CICADAS

My poor boy Jake has had diarrhea this week from eating cicadas! UGH! :(

I took him to the vet the first day of diarrhea and his response was "Cicadas". They've been seeing lots of dogs with vomiting and diarrhea. The probiotic and special dog food helped but as soon as he ate another bug it was all back!

Has anyone else had this problem?

Poor Jake, and poor Carol! 8O

Is he normally a bug eater?

We had our big Cicada year about 3 yrs ago... glad I have no bug eaters in my big gang...this could have gotten ugly  :?
Ugh.. I wonder if that may explain Kaytee's and Darby's diarrhea and vomiting just recently. We don't have digestive problems often... now you've got me wondering if it might have been the June Bugs. We have a security light out back and it was attracting them at night. We were leaning toward something bacterial as being the cause. Hoping we don't have round two... my husband mentioned this morning that he thought Kaytee might have eaten one. :twitch: Yuck!!! Gross!!!
Poor Jake~~ and you!!!!

That is one thing Heart does not ingest...Rocks??? Potting soil???? GRASS???? .......SURE!!!....but NO bugs~~~~ :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:
I'm sorry your Jake is having GI problems... I didn't know Chicadas were poisonous?
How is Jake? Poor baby boy! Sorry to hear this Carol. Give him a big kiss from us!
This year is supposed to be really bad for cicadas, a 13 year brood are emerging.
Here's a link to a map showing where they are heavily populated this year

Cicadas are not poisonous, BUT...TOO much of a good thing is never good for you!! :!: :|

I know a couple of pups who, not only are having upset tummies but a rash on their mouth from the prickly legs as they scoop them up~ :( :(

Soon they will be gone...Thank heavens! And all the bellies will be feeling a lot better.. :plead:

This was on the National Geographic website... it looks like they cause digestive problems.

• Dogs and cats may also avail themselves of the cicada smorgasbord. It does them no harm, although if they eat too many they may have some difficulty digesting a surfeit of cicada skins. There have been reported cases of dogs' digestive tracts becoming blocked by eating too many cicadas.
Glad we don't have those things up here.
Those things were like birds at Purina Farms during Sheepiepalooza.

Tilly sure enjoyed playing with that one.

8O 8O woah thank you for the information.
We better watch out.
I haven't seen/ heard any in OH, but we visit TX and they are there.....
Jake is not usually a bug eater but when I would let him out I would see him sniffing the ground , then his mouth would open and ............GULP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
Within the next couple hours he would have diarrhea. Vet reported cicadas can also cause vomiting. So far no vomiting.

Now I'm taking Jake out on a leash to go potty.

In the evening my sidewalk and front porch are covered with dead cicadas but by morning..........they're all gone!!!!!!
All the wildlife eats them too, along with the dogs. My subdivision is heavily wooded. I heard on the news that some people are freezing them to use as bait for fishing!

I'll be so glad when they're gone. They're so GROSS!! I'm sure Jake will be glad when they're gone too!
I don't ever remember us having them so maybe we are too far north for them. I do hope.
I had to look them up as i had no idea what they were :?

I'm glad we don't have them as Marley would have a field day eating them .

Hope Jake is feeling better.
I saw my first one at Sheepiepalooza. It was pretty, as bugs go, but certainly did not look yummy. Hope all the dogs stay away from them!
Thanks everyone for all your responses and well wishes for Jake. I appreciate it!

Jake seems to be feeling better today. He was running around my yard in circles with a neighborhood dog a little earlier, so I think he's perking up. Yesterday at our club meeting he was clingy to Val!!!!!! He sat underneath the table at Val's feet and had his head in her lap practically during the entire meeting!!!!!!!!! lol

Carol, I gave Jake a big kiss from GiGi and Bogey! :)
