Very dry, chapped tummy

Those of you who have read my members only thread about Gertie the beagle might remember me writing about this poor little girl's weight problem.

She is losing weight, and gaining mobility, but one other problem has me a bit stumped. Her tummy, especially the scar from her spay and her nipples are soooo very chapped :( . I guess its from stretching (from her weight gain) and also because she was so heavy her tummy dragged the ground somewhat.

Does anyone here have suggestions for what to put on as a balm? I tried bag balm, but it is evidently too tasty  , and she became obsessed with licking it off. Would plain Vaseline be of any help? Is there a product designed for pregnant bitches that would be better?

I don't know about pregnant bitches as I've never seen this happen in those cases, but I shaved Sybil's stomach a couple of weeks ago to help her stay cool - I've done this a number of times with a number of different dogs and never had a problem - and she started behaving like it was itchy so I dusted some gold bond powder on her and that made her chill out. I'm not sure what I would try if a dog was already dry and chapped - lotion seems much more appropriate and bag balm was a good choice, but I know just from moisterizing that if I put any lotion on any part of my body the hounds start following me around like I'm wearing butter or something 8O so it's not too surprising she'd want to lick it off. Not sure what else to tell you.

I missed the post about your new baby so I had to go back to look.

As long as there's no infection, Vaseline is a great moisturizer/sealer.
Could you put a little shirt on her after you apply whatever salve your
using? Maybe one more form fitting?
Thank you guys :)

I'll try the bag balm again with a t-shirt...maybe at night, so she'll go to sleep before figuring out how to get around the shirt  She's surprisingly agile and flexible for a dog shaped like a bowling ball! 8O

LOL on the "butter", Kristine!

Oh that made me laugh. I have made that comment about myself on occasion....
This works every time -- Mix Malox liquid with Aquaphor-- make it rather thick, 2 parts aquaphor, 1 part malox I would say. Coat the belly, wrap the little bowling ball with an ace bandage, or belly wrap so she can't get to the area. A couple days and it will be healed. :)

Thanx Lori! Ive never heard of aquaphor though...is it something you'd get at a pharmacy? Or at pet supply store?

Pharmacy is my guess...I have never ordered it, but it's a human moisturizer medication. Several of my homecare clients have had it.
You will find it with the other moisturizers at CVS or Walgreens.... around the Curell products. It comes in a jar, which is like a cream, or in a petroleum base, like vaseline. It's used for radiation patients to help with the burns on the skin. I use the petroleum based product with the malox. It's also great for skin rashes and insect bites. :-)
Really good information Lori! Thanks! Although we don't have any of those problems at preset--I will remember this for the future!
What about also treating from inside? Cold pressed flax seed oil to help there, for butter balls size, 1/4 teaspoon over her din din should help her skin.
Lisa and I were thinking along the same line, oil inside. You could also pierce some Vit D, flax seed and smear on her tummy......so when she licks it off she'll also be getting nutrients.

Her licking may also be habit now.

tell me about it....Harry is my licker. Actually, he doesn't go after the rosewater and glycerin......but all the lotions and creams......gone. I use just the straight rosewater and glycerin from Humco, not the stuff in a lotion base. It is for dry skin and skin protection...rose scented dog........?? What about cornhusker's lotion?
