I just have one quick picture, from Lisa's cell phone (Lisa discovered her, when she got here to pick up Norah and went to the barn to feed her bunny). I took more, and will download them tonight after dog training...which I am now late for! |

omg CUTE!!!!! |
Francine is sooo cute and Steph looks like she did ok. |
She's adorable!!! Welcome to the world Francine! |
oh yes!!! Welcome Francine...Stefany you did a great job!!!!! |
what is a Cria? Looks like a Llama . |
A baby llama is called a cria. A cria is just a Spanish word for baby animal in Spanish. The things I know because I know someone with a llama. LOL |
Adorable! I guess you need a farm hand to help out now for sure? |
She is so cute!!!!! She has Murphy's legs |
I was watching for updates on Stefany!! Congratulations! She's adorable. |
Oh such knock-kneed cuteness!! Congratulations! |
Just too cute! |
Adorable!!! Kristine |
I am in love Soooooooooooo cute Did not know baby Llamas are called Crias. Ooooh way adorable. |
Congrats Stefany! Baby is adorable! Who gets to keep her? Does Baby stay with you, or go back to the breeder? |
Adorable! Congrats! Cindy |

I talked w/ her breeder tonight - she is very happy as well. The plan is to take both down in about 6-8 weeks for Stefany to breed back. Normally they do it within 10 days after birthing, but it's too far (into northern Iowa) for a new baby. We will breed her to the same male again - it obviously works really well! Tomorrow is imprinting day. So sad I have to work |
OMG How cute. I want one! Of course, I'd insist it lived in the house, shared our bed, had its own bowl, and learned to snuggle on the couch. I know it's a baby llama, but I've been campaigning for an alpaca for years, and I really think that little cutie would do very nicely either way! |
here are some pictures - Francine is just a few hours old. She was born in the barn...lol..reminds me of the saying "were you born in a barn?" out in the big open area, Todd moved them into a large stall area where they can bond. Plan is to have them in there for several days. Francine was sleeping - quite the big day! She woke up when I came in the pen.... all crusty and new - just a few hours old! Llamas don't lick/clean off their babies when born...just an odd quirk I guess. They birth in the midday - warmest part of the day instinctively to counteract this habit. look at that alert little girl! Now that I woke her up, she decided she was hungry... crias curl their tails up when they are hungry - so cute! She is so TINY! - mostly just long long legs Both Stefany and Francine are getting something to eat Tomorrow is imprinting day - where Francine gets handled and touched all over - even in her mouth. It needs to be at least 45 - 60 minutes worth of handling - and can be spread out throughout the day. I am so sad I work tomorrow! She will get all brushed and cleaned - I can't wait to see her coat - it's so curly! Stefany is a great mom - we are so lucky Francine is lucky too! Even all crusty and gangly she is adorable...I'm in love! |
Haaaaaaaaa I was reading your last post outloud about the imprinting to Kaj (he was sitting across from me on his computer) but obviously not paying attention to my explanation of a Cria. He appeared shocked and said she is doing what to her daughter? Now I can accuse him of not listening to me...lol Your new baby is adorable...more pics please!! Also thanks for educating me on what a Cria is as I never heard of it before either. Marianne |
So adorable I love those cute legs. And so cute that Stephanie has a cream mask and Francine a brown mask, they are the reverse color. |

How exciting! She is so cute! It's amazing how she supports her head, it looks so big for her body! |
Absolutely adorable! I'm sorry you won't be there for imprinting. Lucky Todd. |
So why do humans need to imprint the lamas? She is a sweet adorable baby, I love her! |
This is Francine's dad - CH Chilean Toreador Stefany last summer - much more sleek and trim - and 2 days before birthing (they actually call it criating - kind of cool!) even though she is woolier, you can really tell the pregnancy! Here is Tiff - Stefany's mom. She belongs to one of my dog/sheep friends now - due in August So much more dark colored! The normal thing is to breed back the moms within 10 days of birth of the cria. But, seeing we will breed back to the same male, and it's a 2 hour drive, we are going to wait a bit. So, in 6-8 weeks we trek them back to IA for breeding. Llamas are odd w/ fertility - they ovulate when bred. So they can be bred anytime - no heat cycles. The main concern is being in MN, they need to be bred so the birth is in the warm summer months. Stefany picked a super hot day yesterday - it was over 97 degrees when Francine was born. I peeked in on them before leaving for work at 6:30 this morning - both are looking great. They were laying near each other - long necks in the air! (That's calling kushing btw) |
They are both adorable. They sure don't wait long to re-breed do they? Glad you get to keep the cria. |
Baba wrote: So why do humans need to imprint the lamas? She is a sweet adorable baby, I love her! The imprinting involves handling them all over their body in a calm, stroking way. There are very specific directions - need to be kushed (laying down) and stroked all over their entire bodies - even ears, in the mouth, etc. This imprints them for life, and makes for a more calm and tolerant baby, and in turn a more calm and easy to handle adult llama. You are supposed to do the imprint handling for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Poor Todd, what a hardship! If our wind and heat advisory (supposed to be near 100 and up to 45 mph winds!) doesn't cancel my outdoor agility class this evening, I plan on doing a little imprinting of my own tonight after work! |
So cool! |
OK, I am totally jealous! Todd just texted me. He and Breanna (kids are out of school now) have started the imprinting. BOTH of them.... They have done 2 short sessions already today. Todd said Francine was real good during it, seemed to like it. Also that it didn't bother Stefany that they were in there handling her baby all over. I guess as an experienced mom, she is used to this happening....another reason to love her! What a mom! David - at this rate we just may need a farm helper.....lol Marianne - poor Kaj.....I laugh just thinking about that one! |
Ok I can just imagine calling in sick "sorry boss, I have to manhandle a baby Llama today, it's important." |
That is so cool! the imprinting makes sense now that you've explained it. Francine's dad definately looks like a CH. He is beautiful! Why does Steph's mom have such a dipped back? Steph nor Daddy have it. It might be the camera angle, but Steph seems to have a more solid/stout build then her momma. |

Steph nor Daddy have it. It might be the camera angle, but Steph seems to have a more solid/stout build then her momma. Tiff is older, and is a very much lighter built llama. I believe Tiff is 12 when this was taken last year. They live long - like 25 years, and can reproduce as long as they are healthy. Part of the back dip might be the camera angle too. It is normal to have some dip, in fact one of the signs of impending birth I was to watch for was that the dip would go away. And it did - the day before, she actually rounded up! Tiff is also here near me in MN - we brought both girls up here in the same trip. Tiff is at my friend Judy's house, due in August. Hopefully due, her breeding was never confirmed. Judy was so excited we successfully made it through birthing. Tiff is her 1st llama, but she raises sheep also, so somewhat handy w/ the whole care process. She and I were both so afraid something would go wrong!~ One down, one to go! When we were down at the breeder's farm meeting the girls, I noted the same thing - how the build of them was so different. Body-wise, Stef is superior. Tiff does have a nice head - it's important in showing, like an arab horse's head is a big part of the judging. It was really fun seeing all of them, as we never have had a show quality llama before. I should scan in the show magazine ad of Toreador - it is fabulous! I will try and do that tonight and post it. Totally impressive! And responsible llama breeding is just like our dogs - always trying to make the perfect llama, improving traits with each generation. |
I have to say on the top of the cute factor, I am learning a lot here! |
Adorable!! |
Now I want a llama !! Francine is just adorable !!! Her brown eye and long legs! Too bad there are no llamas in Iceland How long until she gets fully grown ? And how old is Stefany ? Isn't Stefany protective of her cria ? Can't wait for more pictures and maybe a video |

Stefany is turning 9 soon - I need to look at her reg. papers tonight and see when her birthday is. She was eight when we got her last summer. She is protective, but not in a bad way. Very watchful, but lets us be in w/ her and Francine. OK w/ us that she knows, but not so sure how she would react with a stranger. We are holding off a few days having family and friends come see her, just to be safe. I am off work Thursday, so I will definitely get fresh pictures and hopefully a short video - good idea! |
adorable |
