This morning, I put a fresh cup of food in her bowl and called her over to it. She came over with some amount of excitement. But when she got to the bowl, she sniffed it and turned away from it. The bag of food that I got this cup from is a large bag that may be a week or two old. It's Iam's large breed in the green bag. I don't remember much more than that as it's what we always bought for the two of them. Could this food be bad? Is she just still in a funk and will snap out? Should we try switching foods,(she's got a pretty delicate tummy when it comes to new foods)? Should I race out and get a puppy for her to play with? Any advice will be genuinely appreciated. Thanks, Vance |

welllllll a puppy would be nice.... ask Maddy. Maybe she wont eat because shes holding out for treats... Kinda - if I dont eat this dog food maybe I'll get a cheese burger- type thing. Try some warm chicken broth poured on her dry food, Also a vet tech friend said you can try putting the liquid from tuna on her food. That will usually get them going. If not a vet check up for blood work might be needed. |
I prowl the dollar stores looking for mackerel at a buck a can. Four nice size pieces and plenty of juice........you could try adding a fish to her diet along with some juice. Even Glacier who is going thru the "picky" phase right now, never turns down a meal with "smackerel". Cheaper than a new puppy, but not nearly as much fun!! |
oh bless her...have you tried putting warm water on the kibble for a few minutes? It always gets my dogs attention. If you give tinned food you can put it in the microwave for 30 seconds to warm it up a bit. Baby food watered down into a gravy probably wouldnt upset her tum. Hope she eats soon...xxxx |
Just in case I would first try buying a new bag of food, from a different store so that hopefully it won't be the same lot. Also do you keep the food in the bag or store it in a container? People often don't realize the fat in the food goes rancid and the container should be washed with every new bag. |

I know that Mady ate very litte while at Sheepiepalooza (we were gone for 10 days). I was worried, so was giving her treats and things she normally didn't get much of. When we got back, I had to go hardcore on the treats. No more, only her food. It took two days before she gave in, and now she is back to normal, eating her regular food. I hope that this changes soon for you! If not, you can send her to my mother, she can fatten anyone up! |

Yours and my mum too Vance has not been long and I know you are worried, when I lost my peppa, Kelsey was like that for over a month and at the time I thought I was going to loose her too. Warm up her food to make it more tempting, that is a little bit of hot water or broth over her kibble, try fish, like tuna in springwater or mackeral something stinky to try and get her to start eating again with her kibble. She is still grieving and I do believe they do so, so even things like cooked roast chicken or steak, even hand fed to her anything to start the process of eating again. Firstly too start with a fresh bag of Kibble just in case. Chicken broth is great too over the kibble as well. Hope your baby starts to eat again soon and I am sure she will, she just needs time and tempting. |
First, I am so sorry about bently. I didn't know until now. Is she acting normal in other ways? Pooping okay...usual activity level...drinking more water...Has there been other changes in the home? Have your hours changed? I would take her for a check up if things don't imporve in a day or so. I'm sure she misses Bently but something else could be going on. And I would be careful about any food, especially fish in a can, from the dollar store. Dollar stores usually get items that are damaged or otherwise not up to quality and I would be concerned about the can...I remember once they were selling toothpaste ( for humans) and it was all recalled for having some extra chemicals or something from China and caused kids to get sick. Hope Zoey starts to eat...Poor baby... |
Any updates about Zoey? I hope she has her appetite back, poor little love. |
Yes and no. Tuesday night, I gave her a bowl of her Iam's with about a 1/4c of chicken broth stirred into it. I waited a few minutes to let the broth soak in and she ate that pretty easily with no hesitation. I was glad to see that she didn't wolf it down; she took her time. I did the same for breakfast this morning. She didn't seem as interested and walked away. I knew she'd come back to it sooner or later so I left it there for the day. When I got home minutes ago, the food was all gone and the bowl licked dry. I'm guessing she ate soon after I left this morning. I'll try the same tonight with a little less chicken juice. I'm also gonna hook up a motion sensing security camera tonight. That should make for some fun videos! |
oh bless her. Send her to my house, you have to eat your dinner quickly or the yorkie gets it! Hope she returns to "normal" soon she must be very confused x:wag: |
I just went through this when we lost our OES the day after this past Christmas. Our 6 year old Sheepie (Lizzy) was devastated. She went 10 days without so much as a nibble. We went to McD' drive through for burgers, Went to the pet store for treats. Did all her favorite stuff. She will snap out of it. When we put our Isabelle down we took Lizzy with us and she knew it was the end. We were all so sad. She was depressed, we spoke to a wonderful breeder that had a litter and we got our name on the list. Bentley arrived on Valentine's day. When I walked through the door with that puppy it was like the best gift ever. Lizzy loves him. Good Luck!! |
Not long after I got to work today, I got an email from Jen asking if I could take time off to take Zoey to the Vet... DUH!!! of course. She said that Zoey left two little puddles while Jen was in the shower and when Jen let her out one last time she was dribbling as she trotted off the deck. The Vet said that Zoey had a mild UTI, we hoped this was all it was. so now she's on ten days of amoxicillin to clear it up. The Vet also said the Zoey's eating too little was ok. The little one weighs SEVENTY pounds!!! She's officially on a diet. Updates to follow... Vance |
Oh, so sorry about the UTI. We have had our share of them. And how I usually found out was my baby girl would stop eating and lay around...I took her temp and it was 104! Our meds of choice were Clarvomox ( spelling?)...but hopefully the amox will help. It can be a bit hard on tummy and if she is not eating, maybe a Pepcid Ac about an hour before the meds mmight help coat tummy. Ask vet. For us, after several reocurring UTI, we are on a hormone replacement therapy due to an abnormal vluvla shape..in simple terms...and so far so good... Hope all works out...I swear these dogs will kill us! |
The Vet said that if this didn't 'fix' things, she'd put Zoey on something else that tightens up the urethra. I think that's what she said. Vance |
They put them on a hormone drug if it turns out to be what they call a "Spay incontinence". That can happen years later after a spay there is a weakness there and the hormone drug helps strengthen that department. Also with her a mild UTI if after she is still dribbling she might need another course before you take the next step with hormone therapy. Sometimes with the UTI's it takes a bit longer to clear even though mild at the moment. So if after and she is still dribbling ask the vet for one more course before going down the hormone medication trail. Just in case, the drug for that if it is an incontinence problem is good but sometimes with UTI's they can be just a case of a second course to rule that out completely before if needed taking the other. |
