But I feel I had to do this. The fire left a ton of soot and smoke in their coat. They were scratching and licking and just miserable. I had them bathed and brushed out twice. But I guess the soot was embedded in their skin and it was drying out and making them miserable so off came the coat and now I feel terrible Did I do the right thing? How long until, it grows back? |

It comes back pretty fast. Within 6 weeks you will notice more hair, by three months you'll be brushing again.....soft brush, more of a back rub for them. In nine months they'll be plenty shaggy for you. Consider this their summer-do, getting ready for summer camp look. |
Of course you did the right thing! Sheepies are perfect no matter the length of their hair. And it is just hair, it does grow back. Just enjoy the velvety feel of the short hair while it lasts! |
Their health and well-being has to come 1st. Shockingly short hair is always...well, a SHOCK! Enjoy the break from grooming while getting your house back in order Then you will all be good together about the same time! |
Absolutely no choice if it was affecting their health. I understand that you wish they weren't short but if two visits to the groomer didn't sort things then you really had to clip them off. |
Go look at the recent posts with our Zoey. I shaved her REAL short back on December 16. So you can see how much grows in a short five months. And of course you did good on them. Vance |
I always feel the same way when they go short! But it is back in short order! At least they are comfortable and healthy! |
You guys are the best You made me feel so much better! Right after I wrote that post, the temp here shot up to the mid 9o's with just about the same amount of humidity, making it VERY uncomfortable. I think the dogs welcomed their shorty hair do! And you are so right about taking a break from brushing so I can rebuild this house. That alone is so time consuming... |
So thankful you all are safe. The hair will grow and your sheep will be fluffy again in no time!!! enjoy your break from grooming. |
I actually like the shaved look every now and then. Don't get me wrong, I love when the fur starts to look fluffy again, but they look like a cross between a great dane and a weimaraner. It's totally shocking, but you'll get used to. And the lack of fur around the house, the no soggy face in your lap, and for Sunny, her cute snout speckles, make it worth it! |
